fnick reacted to Landlubber Mike in Citroen 2CV by Landlubber Mike - FINISHED - Airfix and Tamiya - 1/24 - PLASTIC
I've been fitting in some work on the Citroen over the last few weeks while primarily working on the F3F builds. I've got the chassis set up with the engine, and have a lot of the other assorted parts painted. Just need to start putting things together. I think I shared some of the pictures before, but here are some current ones.
I've used light and dark grey washes to break up the solid sections of black, and brown washes to add depth to the seats and interior. I'm wondering about doing that for the body of the car too. If I do, it will have a different look than a "showroom new" model, which I think I'm fine with. The Tamiya dark yellow looks nice, but kinda plastic. I was originally thinking of spraying on a few layers of gloss clear coat and then buffing it to a nice shine, but I'm not sure that would really fit with this kind of car. So, I might just add washes and then use a semi-gloss or gloss clear coat and call it a day. I have some other car models where a buffed out clear coat would be a lot more appropriate.
One part of the kit that I've been thinking about modifying is the grill. The instructions have you painting it black and picking out the gratings and frame in grey. What I'm thinking of doing is actually cutting out the plastic between the gratings so that it looks more realistic. Could be a disaster, but I might as well try. I have some generic PE grills from Modelcargarage.com that could be a last resort if it's not working out. The piece is a bit thick, so it might be a little tricky. I'm thinking of using my micromotor to route out as much as possible, and then use an X-acto to clean things up.

I haven't finished the roof of the village's communal oven yet. I had very little time these last few days to model...
But I devoted myself to one little thing anyway to complete the main constructions: a wall separating the village from the cloister.
It was out of the question to let the villagers and other visitors see the inside of the monastic part, contrary to the assembly of the basic kit.
So a separation was almost obligatory!
I added a well leaning against the wall and a drinking trough for the herds and/or the animals in the market place. The layout of this well is inspired by a real site. 😉

Miscellaneous Items
There are a few extra bits and pieces that I completed under the heading of “miscellaneous” items. The first of these was the battery box. Although the luggage compartments make an ideal hiding place for a battery box, I discovered that even a AAA battery size is too large for the space. Paul Koo showed using an ‘N’ size battery here. While I was able to find ‘N’ size batteries at my local electronics store, I could not find a battery holder to match. So I made my own by cannibalising the connectors from a AAA battery box and making a new box from 1.5mm styrene. It’s a snug fit even so, but we got there in the end.
Pocher provides a neat little set of tools that simply require painting and gluing in place in the tool box, and a leather log book, the pages of which are cut from the pages of the instruction manual. They are a nice touch to add a little extra interest to the model.
With all of the chassis work completed, I was able to go back and install my scratch-built ignition wiring loom along with all the spark plug leads. The leads themselves are an after-market part from Model Motorcars.
And finally, here is a ‘glam shot’ of overall progress to date.
Next up, the wire wheels......stay tuned.

Cheers Craig that is not something I had thought of. Have to admit the challenge of doing it the hard way with paints is also appealing... Why make things simple when they can be complicated...😄
And thank you for your compliment.

Thanks for feedback. Good to know I'm not going about this the wrong way. Yes I did think of doing the white first but it was more of a "should have done the white first!" 😋

Small update. Seats paint and fitted in interior along with dash.
Car bonnet also painted. Need to start thinking about the two white stripes.plan is to use tape to mark stripes out and then start sanding carefully to remove gloss coat from red paint. Knowing that white doesn't have generally great coverage properties I'm thinking of putting down a coat of grey first to try and keep the number of coats down.
Might try it on car bonnet first so that if I need to strip the paint and start again at least it will be a small part!
Thanks for looking in.
Cheers

I guess we were getting a lot of traffic from the ship builders seeing what was going on here.... And yeah they had to make a distinction.... This is after all the Nautical Research's Guild's forum and Ship modeling is the backbone of that forum.... Not a general modeling site.... So the response is appropriate.....
The thing is even if we have to do a bit more legwork, it is still the best modeling forum around IMHO and what we become is that little hidden corner gem of a spot where all are actually welcome...
It's the only modeling forum that actually practices what they preach..... the more we post, the more we will draw others through the search engines it ups their hits and brings people to ship modeling in a way I'm sure they didn't expect. So I can appreciate their need to stay focused on their main mission, but am glad they can see the benefit of keeping this little corner of their world open for us....
Best modeling site on the net I say....

I haven't had much time to keep this oven going. And the heat wave didn't help to go up in the workshop...
But it's still going on !
Some pictures of the chronology of the last days. 😁

Masking, sanding, and priming with grey will be a good approach for the white racing stripes. Next car, maybe think about laying down the white first, then masking the white areas before putting the red down.
Really enjoying watching this come together, it’s both a classic car and classic model!
