Thanks for the birthday wishes.  Beer-o-clock, wine-o-clock, drink with an umbrella in it-o-clock... works for me today.

Greg, actually I'm not counting those days at all... I'm counting the days until I can retire.

Hmm.... I wanted to "like" all your posts, but I got this (direct quote from the error message)  "You have reached your quota of positive votes for the day".. strange... didn't know we could do that.

Thanks for gentle comments and birthday wishes, everyone.

Jerry.... I need a new keyboard after that one...

    Michael,
The board is as small as I can make it and still use the stand to support it when I flip it.  Also, all my measurements use the base board as a refence and I need room for the tool.  There will be a day when she's cut free....

I learned that upside down trick seemingly eons ago for both painting and photography.  Works a treat.

    Aldo,
I've been playing with the wood and I think stepping the thickness and then sanding to shape will work.  We'll see.

    Popeye,
You're psychic... I did that..  day after my 18th, I joined the USMC but didn't leave for boot camp until September.

Ah... noon has arrived.  The day's yard work has been finished, the BBQ is cleaned and ready to fire up (though I don't need a holiday or special occasion to use it) and it's officially "beer-o'clock".  Because of the distance involved... I'll share a virtual beer with everyone.    For those who don't... coffee...

ahhhh.....memories....they bring you back,  don't it     I have three ships that are still around since I picked the hobby back up.....before I got into wood kits.   I always say that they are the best barometer of your experience level.....I can see my paint has improved

sometimes I miss plastic.......I have the United States,  that I need wood for,  and I have the Lindberg Jolly Rodgers.......I look forward to fooling around with these some day soon.........got to clear the smoke I created first though

one of my biggest problems with the decal maker is the transparency issue.  I think I need to find a printer that will go over 600 DPI.  I have an HP deskjet F2480 w/ scanner.   I have the Testor's  'decal it'  decal maker standard edition {I sent out for it}.   the basic one will not allow you to import images into it.  the standard edition will allow you to do that.   I've been scanning all kinds of stuff....stencils and the like,  import them in,  and size them down.   it will even bend the text and you can change the font to anything you want......get some really fancy placards and stuff that a way

Okay, since this log is already hijacked, I'm going to add a little anecdote.
We do have guns in our house and I usually just "kill" sheets of paper with round circles on them.
We used to raise pheasants years ago. Our main breeding male escaped the enclosure and took up residence in the woods nearby. He would come back every day to visit his ladies and try as we may, we could never catch or trap him. His visits became fewer and further between until he only appeared a couple of times a month. One day when I was home alone, the pheasant returned. I headed out the door, 22 rifle in hand, and both the pheasant and I were on the run through the field. Without stopping, I raised the rifle and shot him through the neck. He was on the supper table that night!!
The funniest part was a relative saying (in jest): "boy, I hope Gerry never tries to leave home."   :D

Well.. a big thank you to everyone who endeavoured to keep this thread alive (for good or evil) during my last work session. I have a small update before I head north later today. Let us hope that normality will be restored and the weirdness will stay hidden under whatever dark rock it came from in the first place....

    So... without further a-do...

The first set of main shrouds....

Serving the leading shroud took a good while. Anyone who recalls my machine is only good for about 6 inches of serving at one time.... (well 5 1/2 to give yourself a little working space)... anyway, to server a length of line almost 12 inches required a few adjustments along the way. A simple matter of securing the leading edge of the serving with a single overhand knot to keep things from unravelling, adjust the position of the shroud and resume. I found I didn't need to untie the knot as it's almost invisible. It actually served as a proof of concept for more complicated servings I will have to do in the near future (cut splices etc.) .... it is possible to stop, adjust and restart.. without having things turn into a rat's nest later on... at least not by themselves... what I do with them will be another matter altogether.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks you for lookin in and the very kind comments and remarks.

I have a bit of an update, probably the last one for a short period as the Admiral and I are off for a few days up north, Northumberland for a bit of hill and fell walking, all around Kielda forest.

Deck furniture for the upper gun deck is fitted as are the guns, the guns are rigged but I'm waiting for the flemish coils to dry so I can finish them off, that's the only fault with the system I use, drying time, must learn to be patient.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No hick ups during this stage which is always a bonus.

hey there John......I used the Testor's decal maker.  not too sure if it can be purchased in a hobby store........I know they carry the  'basic'  program.   I had to get mine from the site.

    Testors

it called the standard edition.   with the basic program,  you cannot import anything into it,  but with the standard program,  you can.  I've been looking around for all kinds of thing to import.......stencils and stuff.  it does have it's draw-backs though......it's a work in progress.

if you just want lettering,  try some of these....I hope they are good for you.

I have done more planking to the other side,  in order to even it out on both sides.   I have done some tapering to the planks so far in the process.   now that I'm reaching the chines,  it will require more.

I don't know what the thought was in creating the ribs with such an edge at the chines.   in past pictures of the hull frame,  you can see just how much of an edge there is.   this must be removed and rounded to compliment the contour of the hull below the water line.

I do believe not, as we did not bother, as I always say, no matter what material you use, if the model has a soul, nobody bothers anymore about the material :-)

PS: That is why I am thankful, that there is no separation of plastik and wood here in MSW as in some other places - it IS nonsense to me.

Small update (no pun intended )

I painted the capstan parts which you can see below. I forgot to include showing a dime for size reference, but it's definitely tiny parts for my old eyes. At this point, I'm ready to complete the assembly once I figure out how to square the black cog on the shaft. It wobbles a bit so I want to square it up with a jig or something before I add glue. I still need to add fastener heads to the top metal band and of course add simulated metal bands (with fastener heads) after assembly is complete.

The second picture shows my first attempt at making simulated fastener heads using CA glue. Some look OK while others were smeared. There is certainly a technique to doing this, in order to get repeat success. I may end up having to find a syringe as suggested by Dave - another trip to the hobby store... This ring was an earlier effort where it had the right OD but the ID looked too big, but it came in handy to experiment with.

The simulated metal ring on the capstan top was made from very heavy paper (60-80 pound not sure which). The paper measured .006" thick which scales up to ~3/8" thick. This looked and cut better than the other three types of paper I tried. I used a 1/2" hole punch for the OD and a 3/8" hole punch for the ID. In case your wondering, yes you can sand paper edges if there are a few ragged edges. I initially used a black sharpie to color the ring, but it was shiney. I suspected dullcoat would take the shin away, but I was also worried about the glue soaking through the paper, so I simply painted the ring black before gluing it in place with diluted PVA. I considered using CA glue, but it dries so quickly I wanted more time to position the ring.

I almost forgot to mention the portable AC unit works great! No more 15 minute sweat sessions
