You've truely motivated me to try that kind of challenge!

Here's a sort of prewiev of the future goal (image from: http://www.schiffsspotter.de/Repliken/Kraweel_Lisa_von_Luebeck.htm)

    Thanks and ... ahoi! ...

That's exactly what I did Patrick with the diluted glue.  I'm still happy with beeswax on any straight lines.  CA REALLY sets up and it's too fast for me on this type of stuff.  Popeye is right on the seizing though.  He also mentioned folks who rig in white and dye the rigging.  I met one gentleman who actually paints his rigging after it's on.  I've tried that and it can work.  But we're back to the 'what kind of thread and what kind of paint' issue.

I guess the answer, like for a lot of things, is try it off the ship and when you find a method, stick with it!   And keep an eye on the Forum for suggestions  .

    OK, back to work.

Yay! Pictures... and lots of odd fiddly bits...  even better

I bet the anchors might be stowed below... so they don't get lost
Radar domes are more like oversized cakes, rather than mushrooms... that's typically for communications (sat phones and whatnot...) GPS antennae are quite small and then can be mushroom shaped.. or sometimes like a popsicle...

    you could try.......

if you have a photo shop in your computer.......create the image or import it.......sail cloth will go through the printer with no problem,  just be ready to guide it.    I use decal bonder to seal the cloth,  so the color doesn't run.......do light coats......two or three should do the trick.

superb job on the ship Alex.........that crest would look great on a sail.   you can even do flags in the same manner.  it can even be wrinkled nicely when dry.

I say......by the time he gets to the main mast......

his right eye will start to twitch
his mood will start to pitch
and when he gets to the mizzen mast
    he'll really start to itch.........THEN!

he will get to the second step.....and do it all again!

Looking amazing, Sjors - well done!  I'm with Andy - do we look at time or number of knots before he goes off the deep end and adds water skis to the ship?

I think we need to start a countdown clock here...

Estimate the time to remaining before Sjors gets totally driven nuts by ratlines... although at the moment he seems to be evading the task at hand

the ladder for the starboard side was made

after making a pair of foot rests for the upper ends it was dry fitted.

the brackets on the platform were painted steel and the rest of it got a coat of semi gloss lacquer

then it was assembled on the stern,  complete with support ropes.....these can be painted steel to simulate cable.  I also want to add 10mm brads to the brackets to simulate fasteners

back to the ladders,  the starboard ladder was painted flat white.   another one was created for the platform.......it too was painted flat white

I had also forgotten the decals for the engine cover....ID placards and such.   these parts were then assembled onto the boat.

    ...eh ...eh ...eh ...!!!

Red is for the lower part of the forecastle. There's a white colored middle part and a semi-natural wooden part on the top. Semi-natural because (as shown in the pictures) it's a bit stained with dark linseed oil. You can see the difference: the hull under the forecastle is still natural, meanwhile the forecastle is stained.

p.s. this picture is a prewiev.... In fact you can see also the wales (red)
Pasta ai carciofi is a typical recipe of my town. But you can find lots of varieties of pasta all'uovo (pasta made with flour an eggs). If you decide to come here, tell me something ....!!!!

    Thanks, Popeye!

Next two pictures show completely the reason of my building choices. In this way, the gunports' frames are thin and totally included in the planking. Besides, they protrude a bit adding realism to the whole structure. The following pictures show three red stripes, but the highest will be removed and changed with a white one.

    Cheers

The Red and White color (together with a double-head eagle) is the emblem of Lübeck, the Hanseatic town to which this ship belongs. Here is the flag.

Good thoughts Andy, or have a swimming platform on the Denny Zen also. They'll have to do something waiting for them lobsters to snare themselves.

No diving board huh, what about the on board HOT TUB!

Seriously though I love the crazy thoughs your builds stir in me. Who needs rules in a hobby other then those you make.

after all this was finished and allowed to dry,  the doors were assembled onto the traps.

the adjustment was made to the sorting table......it looks a bit better.

the trap near the crane was cemented in place first..........

the other lobster is on the sorting table........

I failed to get any pictures of the rope tying and such,  but here are the finished pictures of the rest of the traps.  they are all cemented in place.

this ends the saga of the traps........a few more props,  and this boat will be finished.   I can then do the Phylly C,  which will require a lot less to finish that one off.   Enjoy!!!

I did make a small alteration to the weathering on the sort table......you might see it in later pictures.   I did the rest of the painting and assembly on the front doors for the traps.

I put a few buoys under the sheer........then I began to add the colors to the front doors.

the eye bolts were added to the traps......they then bacame part of the paint process......they need to look just as weathered as the traps.  the painting continued........

the weathering was done to the winch and the backside of the crane.

    the painting continued......

I had a look at what out atlantic lobsters look like........they were given a base coat of dark flat green.

    more painting continued.......

I knew it was missing something!!!!!!  green!

then I added the vegitation and some starfish that I've had tucked away.   these starfish have been in my possession since the 80's....when my oldest son was little.  we used to go to Hampton beach during the summers,  and look for these little guys in the rocks at low tide.   ahhhhhh,  memories!

this little guy was another creature we caught.......I believe it is a prawn,  but I'm not sure.   this seems to be as good a place as any for him.......before he's reduced to powder.

the ropes were made for the traps and set on them to take on their shape as they dry

....and then,  after many color layerings,   are the lobsters

I have made some progress off and on during the last couple of days.   the starboard side window is in place now.

then ........I did it.   I'm not totally pleased with what I did....I fear that I made the boat look like crap.  I started out by adding some weathering to the sorting table.

....and then it sort of fanned out over the entire boat........

the extra trap was added,  along with a couple more rope coils.   what I'm using here is the hemp rope, that I have used on earlier builds.   I like the looks of this rope.

here is a comparison of the original buoy plugs that came with the kit,  and the buoys I made.....I did size them down some.

the relation of the buoy and the trap isn't too far out,  so .....the heck with it,  I'll use them.   I also started to make the front doors for the other traps.

I bought this senery material for my B&M snow plow diorama......that's been in the closet for a while now.   I only need a little of it for what I want to do.

after the doors were bent to fit,  a bit more will be done to the traps,  before they are cemented on.

    more progress soon

    Hi mates,

a little new step: fore gunports. As said above, I had to solve a few issues; among them, how to make thin gunports with a round ceiling. Having decided to do a double planking, I used the first planking as support for the gunport's frames. I made and pasted them in their whole shape (using a dima to have identical ones), than I holed and filed each one from internal to external to reach a very thin thickness, impossible to make in only one piece, if I had shaped them before their gluing. In the following pictures, you can see the working process; in the last picture, the real color of the hull (...in the previous ones, I had mistaken the white-balancing of my camera...).

    Regards
    Alex

    Hi Popeye,
Thanks for the feedback, how's the Gothenborg going? last I saw you were well into the sticks, have you started on the strings yet? I have fitted the fore main yard and started on the running rig. I will post an update when the foremast is completed.
Have you revived your build log, losing the lot was a bit of a tragedy wasn't it.
    Cheers,
    David.
