It is GREAT to hear from you.
I have additional interests and have decided to attempt to liquidate some toys that I realistically don’t think I will use. I have hung on to those kits under the guise of pride of ownership. I see some directions in which I’d like to move and the sale of those kits would propel me.

All is well out here. I have simply been doing other things for awhile.

Additionally, I have just photographed both kits and as soon as this is posted will go back to the two kit for sale offerings and add the photos.

The kit info does not specify the wood type on either kit. I have removed the FAIR AMERICAN listing. Further inspection of the box interior revealed there are no wood billets. Strange .  .  .

Kurt, Mike, Denis, Joe & Doc, thank you for your kind comments. All is well at the Cougar Mtn Shipyard. We even had snow flurries on Christmas eve, unusual for Seattle. I am 900 feet up a 1400 foot hill and that helps.

The fourth jongle was put in place and both edges of the uppermost jongle have been planked aft, port and stbd. The spell checker doesn't like some of these nautical terms!

Nothing exciting, just a strake section, glue, clamp, wait for it to set and then repeat the process.

All looks tight so hopefully it will sand out well. I need to experiment with a patch of this planking and see if I can use sanding sealer as well as poly or rubbed effect varnish. I still intend to use flat white for the under water hull area.

This is what I have on hand. I would appreciate comments on what would be appropriate as an undercoat for both the painted and the stain/varnish area.

Over the past few months I drifted into other areas of interest. A couple of Raspberry Pi projects and some ham radio interests but all the while a plank here and a plank there - insufficient for a MSW post. During the process I have planked port & starboard at the same rate because I thought it would help me maintain symmetry at the stem and stern.

I am within about eight strakes of completion. Additionally, I see the possibility of a third and double length joggle and probably a couple of stealers. Today I did the four joggles. I'll run their four matching strakes tomorrow, probably a standard strake on each side of them and then decide on the advisability of an additional joggle.

So far I have done only a rough sanding. The plank seams are satisfactory - tight and no gaps.

Yesterday the ladder and capstan were built and air brushed. This morning I glued them into position. All deck beams for the next level were fit and glued. The transom piece was tapered as necessary and finally glued into permanent position.

The midship deck beams are split for the open look down area to the deck below. The supplied pieces had rectangular columns and that didn't look attractive to me so I set about trying to sand the columns round - in this case, easier said than done .  .  . no good.

After an afternoon long aborted attempt to sand the MDF rectangles into a somewhat round shape I abandoned that and began to scratch build round replacements. Here you can see the original shape. In my modified piece I have cut off the complete column from the deck beam. Square pieces were made for the top and bottom of the column and 2mm round stock will be cut. The upper square column component is socketed for structural integrity and the bottom square portion of the column has been drilled completely through. That will enable me to fine tune the overall length of the column to the exact required dimension.

In order to capture such small pieces for drilling and furthermore to achieve a uniform result I made a jig to hold the 4mm cubes. I sure wish I had a better drill press and an X Y table. Is there such a thing for such small work?

Tomorrows tasking will be to complete the four columns, paint and install them.

With the next level of deck beams in place it is starting to look a little more ship like .  .  .  .

Thank you dear friends for the "Likes". I am very pleased that you take the time to read and to express your approval .  .  .  .

    Doc & Mark,

And, thank you for your input. By the way, remember when we all learned grammar (is it still taught?) starting a sentence with "and" was prohibited - I see it in literature and the press all the time now .  .  .  .

When  I originally placed the strake above the garboard it was a natural fair run and ended up as you advocate. Doc, it was long, like yours. With this hull geometry, I was afraid it would cause the planks above to climb the stem in an unacceptable way and so, cut it back. In retrospect my failure was the artificial "line out" marks I drew on the frames and nose area balsa with the attempt to treat the lowest zone credibly - it wasn't. That band was unrealistic.

Anyway, it is a good thing I experimented with this because I would not have wanted the finish planking to have ended up as haphazard as this one did. Early on I could see I was headed in an uncontrolled direction and yet pressed on. Shame on me . .  .  .

So, the bow is essentially complete and the significant vertical to round spot on the stern is also planked now. A plank or so on the two open areas with a shutter will complete the first stage planking. It didn't end up nearly as organized as I intended but seriously puts me on notice to do better. At this stage I have good coverage with tight fits. When it is sanded I'll have a good foundation for the finish planking.

    The BIG question now .  .  .  .

When I finish sanding, should I still go ahead with a filler? I have no spaces, etc. between the planks - a tight fit with all strakes edge glued - so what does plastering it with filler accomplish?  Other than something wet, like Bondo, I'd end up sanding it all off! What do you use for a filler that gets into the fine cracks yet is easy to sand? Exact specifics, please. I have experience with Bondo and like its characteristics - but - I never see any of you using it. Is there a negative for what we do?

I have sanding sealer that I intend to use at the end. Is that correct?

I understand these steps are so mundane that none of you ever report them. Please understand that while I spend hours and days reading your excellent build logs, this is my first time through and I am trying to report minor steps in hopes that you'll arrest any lethal steps I am taking.

Thank you dear friends for the "Likes".

David, yes, the ply panels had both horizontal and vertical curves. While very thin it was surprisingly stiff. During the dry fit I experimented with suitable fasteners to ensure a tight fit in both planes. My locator holes were marked so once the glue was applied it was easy to get the pieces where they belonged. Sixty minute epoxy was used to allow ample time for adjustment.  I am satisfied with the result.

Brian, thank you for checking in. I am most pleased to welcome you aboard and look forward to checking out your own projects.

Doc, thank you for commenting. I continue to be in awe with your build.

Denis, yes, liners would not work for the small cannons fore & aft but to my eye are suitable for all the mid ship positions. I believe I'll like their appearance when the final planking is applied.

All the intended liners are in position and painted now.

As I've seen others do in similar circumstances I have constructed a mount to hold the hull securely for planking and used soft ribbed rubber strips on the edges that are in contact with the ship.

I have a days tasking to make minor adjustments in the stem area, recheck fair lays, then begin the first planking. With no planking experience but having read the work of dozens of the rest of you and also studying many different techniques I plan to approach the first planking with the attitude that it is the final planking. Clearly, reading about it and doing it are vastly different. I want to do this so that my final planking with good wood and that I want to look nice isn't in point of fact my first attempt.

To that end, when I do the first plank layer I plan to use David Antscherl's dissertation and line off the hull in a suitable number of five plank bands. I'll do the same for the finish layer.

Can there be a suitable reason to not go slowly and learn?
