BLACK VIKING reacted to Chuck in Position of gun barrels in relation to gun ports for show purposes ( run out )
There are a bunch of contemporary models with guns run out. But they are hard to find. But they are out there. I present Amazon as a great example. This is a model that was built at a high level of detail and craftsmanship. Not all contemporary models are. So this is a superb example to use.
one thing I am struck by is how much the guns protrude from the hull. This helps clear them from rigging and such. This detail is almost always understated with kits. The supplied cannon can not be run out as far as they should be. The reason why…because the supplied carriages are designed incorrectly.
in addition they are centered but slightly lower in each port as you can see. But keep in mind many of the guns can and should be adjusted because they shifted on their carriages over time. Had the museum done this before taking the photos the may have appeared slightly higher in their ports.
Just like with our models…the guns will sometimes shift on the carriage and the entire carriage may shift. So look carefully at this photo to see those which need some care and adjustment.

BLACK VIKING reacted to Bill97 in Le Soleil Royal by Bill97 - FINISHED - Heller - 1/100
I know this is a continuation of the issue of using 2.5mm blocks for the out-haul and in-haul tackles. I set the small cannons in so as to give some space between the front and rear blocks on the out-hauls. On the in-hauls I brought the blocks together and eliminated the planned ring in the deck ring bolt all in an attempt to get the in-haul tackle as short as possible. Even with doing that the eye bolt in the deck to accept the in-haul still needed to be placed very close to the hatch. Is this OK or would I be better served just eliminating the in-hauls? I am thinking since I have the out-hauls on the cannons I should have the in-haul.

BLACK VIKING reacted to Retired guy in Position of gun barrels in relation to gun ports for show purposes ( run out )
Hi Dave sorry for my late reply to your questions,
The drawings are not supplied by Caldercraft, Bugler drawings and his book I won on ebay back in 2004 and John McKay drawings I bought from John this February.
Here is the side view looking head on to give you this perspective.
Regards
Richard

I recall seeing a bottle of Radium salts emulsion that you were supposed to drink for upset stomach - about 1915. But Radium taken orally causes stomach cancer.
Before the Food and Drug Administration was established a lot of useless and dangerous "medicines" were sold. I remember when the FDA stopped the sale of Carter's Little Liver Pills. Research showed they did nothing for the liver.
My favorite was "Qzarko." I remember it from my childhood. It was a black foul smelling liquid that was an instant cure for athlete's foot, ringworm and other skin fungal infections. It was a mixture of coal tar in rubbing alcohol that was bottled in my home town. I always imagined some guy stirring it with a 2x4 in a 50 gallon drum in his basement. Coal tar is a very effective antimicrobial agent, but, unfortunately, it causes cancer.

BLACK VIKING reacted to O.B.one in Pirate ship from Asterix and the Great Crossing by O.B.one - FINISHED - no scale - BOTTLE - the moment before Asterix and Obelix board to spoil the captain's birthday - 3d printed - Fictional
Both the pirate ship and fishing boat is in.
Still have to add about 2mm of blue resin, then the waves. I had to tie some knots inside the bottle, not doing that again.
I could not find figures resembling the pirates. Still looking, but I'm thinking of omitting those. I'm running out of time, friends are taking it back to South Africa from New Zealand. I only have a couple of weeks.
As for the lego rescue boat, hard at work sanding
The fishing expedition has some small fishes made of Playdoh. The fishing net is a torn hair net from ballet. Decorative pebbles for the bottom of the lake, fishnet and pebbles to be submerged in resin.

BLACK VIKING reacted to Cathead in All our problems are solved: post your dodgy solutions
Edit: Oops, meant to post this in the Jokes thread. Oh well, this could function as a dodgy solution, too! I'm going to cross-post it where I meant to, anyway, sorry if you end up reading this twice.
Real conversation between my wife and I recently, edited for clarity and brevity. Background context is that we log and mill lumber on our rural property and are preparing for another round of milling later this week. We both also love puns.
Wife: Are you going to cut up that basswood that fell across the creek?
Me: It'd make sense, it's good model wood.
Wife: You could also go to the pond and catch some bass. Can you compress fish into building material like you can recycled plastic lumber?
Me: That kind of basswood would be even better for scale modeling!

BLACK VIKING reacted to CDW in German 80 cm K(E) Railway Gun "Dora" by CDW - Hobby Boss - 1:72 Scale
As soon as I finish my current MRAP project, I plan to start this massive 1:72 scale German 80cm Railway Gun "Dora".
The finished model will measure in at a mere 44 inches in length. This thing would be a monster in 1:35 scale!

BLACK VIKING reacted to Snug Harbor Johnny in Great Henry (Henry Grace a Dieu 1515) by Sergal (1975 vintage kit) - scale to be clarified
Thank you for all the info in your reply ... This new distraction is a break from the Vasa for perhaps a couple weeks. I know that 'conclusions' are hard to draw from the Anthony roll depictions, and that the is a certain amount of subjectivity to what one thinks he's seeing in the drawing. Yeah, and most of what has survived are mostly stern quarter views. But ... my eyes think they're seeing at least some sideways cantilever' at the forward break of the 'waist' (exposed weather deck) - the back face of the fore castle. It's the 'shading' under the Anthony fore castle going forward from there that also gives the impression of 'overhang'.
I'm no artist, but I've made a quick (and crude) sketch (not even as good as the Anthony roll) to try and depict what I'm seeing.
My pre-1536 concept is a 2-decked fore castle with railings on top that will have shields affixed to said railing. The stern castle would have 3 decks with railing (plus shields on top). I figure when modified in 1536, the stern castle was likely reduced for a 2-deck configuration, then a partial 3rd 'deck' built onto the fore castle in the back half (per Anthony). The pre-1536 would not have top gallants.
I'm a bit overwhelmed at the TOTAL dimensions of the model 'out of the box' ... like 50" stem to stern pole and as high from keel to pennants. It IS a whopper of a project, and when I look at the size of the brass turned guns, they are really at a smaller scale. The likely solution is to make all new framing at 1:88 scale (halfway between the 1:75 of the kit - apart from its length, which is more like 1:65 - and the 1:100 that I'm used to working with. The provided cannon seem consistent with an adjusted size of hull at 1:88. I'm mindful of the display case to protect the finished model. As supplied, over 50 sq. feet of glazing material would be needed for the larger size, versus 27 sq. feet for the adjusted size.
I'm also mindful now that Australia is in a much different time zone (our days and nights are effectively reversed) - so please forgive my earlier oversight time-wise.

The below pics show elements of the bow, keel and stern, which I believe date from the 1800’s and perhaps even earlier.
(I've since found out that they date to the time of launch in 1765 - Steve)

BLACK VIKING reacted to MajorChaos in The Flying Dutchman by MajorChaos - OcCre - 1:50
Steps G and H, videos 7 and 8.
Close enough. I messed up large piece, the glue was committed when I saw it. Large parts outside, narrow part should be inside. And the holes are wrong. It looks good enough. I was excited to see if and go Carrie’s away.
The instructions and videos differ slightly. There are many trimming things that need done that’s not spelled out.
Final step of H is the aging, after it cures a bit I’ll do that.
It’s looking good. Looks like the next steps are planking and prepping the sides.

BLACK VIKING reacted to MajorChaos in The Flying Dutchman by MajorChaos - OcCre - 1:50
Steps E and F, videos 5 and 6. Complete.
I tried to look ahead and save time staining an painting to keep from getting different colors out. Meh, I kinda did good.
It all fits mostly good. This being the first OcCre model I don’t know what I don’t know.
Using the white paint for ghosting was fun, wiped the brush good and still had way to much paint on it.
I’m happy with it so far. It won’t be perfect. I’m trying to build it, not make it perfect. From 10ft when it’s done, no one will see anything wrong. Completion is my only goal.
Installing the rear and F11 was exciting lol. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. 🤣 Can you spot the painting staining error lol.

In to the mind numbing process of making the tackles for the 16 small cannons I am working on. This will require 3 tackles for each cannon, 2 out-haulers and 1 in-hauler. That makes 48 total tackles. Each tackle needs two blocks, each with a hook attached (which I have made) and one of the blocks in each tackle having a lanyard attached. So let’s see that is 96 blocks, 96 hooks, and 48 lanyards. But whose counting!😵💫
