I don't know where some people are coming up with ridiculous ideas of the value of kit built ship models. If they're well done, then they have value. The idea that they're worth so little is total BS. It all depends on the modeler and their skill, and attention to detail, and scale. If that's not the case, then many of us shouldn't even be here, myself included...

I noticed that your first post shows Shipyard's HMS Wolf kit. Are you working on that one? I've been working on it too, though I took a bit of a break to finish up some other stuff. I got as far as making the masts and starting on the other spars. Would love to see what you're doing on the Wolf!

Yeah Richard - I kinda had that idea a little later. No one but you and me will know the difference.

    Hi Mike,

If I were you, I wouldn't attempt to cut out that hatch. Simply lay some thin strips on top of the deck (ie. double plank it) and add the coaming around them.

Keep at it Jonas, it does make up into a nice looking model if you survive the instructions etc.

I remember just how much frustration I had at times when building that kit. Terrible instructions!

    Cheers

Went ahead and colored the inner hull. Probably the first time of many. I used Minwax PreStain and then Minwax Natural stain. This stain doesn't have any color but it adds a "wet" look to the wood. I use it probably more than any other. I think it did help to revitalize the dead looking walnut.

If I decide that's what I want, I will lay down a couple coats of matte varnish.

I have also started work on the cap rails. Instructions call for making several trapezoidal pieces up at the bow in order to get the correct bend. I was tempted to try to just bend an entire stick, but the sticks are 3.5x10mm and they are not interested in edge bending 😒

He-he - so much for "back to planking".  I have added the ribs to the inner hull. The drawing was kinda confusing. One drawing showed the hull with no ribs, the next showed the hull with ribs in place. No mention of size or spacing. I finally noticed a side drawing and determined I needed 2x3mm sticks. There is a full scale drawing that showed the ribs on 19mm centers. Rightly or wrongly that's what I went with.

The rib size looks a little wimpy IMO but it is what it is. I thought I would have to physically bend a few of them to fit but it turned out that brute force and gluing with CA worked OK.

I'm thinking pretty soon I need to stain & finish the inner hull. There's a whole bunch of stuff that will be going on the decks and inner hull. Trying to color them later will be problematic. I suspect I will go with my old stand in - Natural stain with a satin finish. It will be interesting to see if that revives the walnut or not. It looks pretty shabby at this point.

I don’t know Chris, your rushed rigging in 5 days would make most of us very happy if we did it! 🤣

I did rush the rig, cut a lot of corners, meaning it took around 5 days from shrouds to braces - but I only need the model to look presentable for box art...

I don’t know how you manage to design and build so many ships so quickly. She is a very interesting looking ship with the drop keels and bow chasers.

I'm rebooting the USRC after I digged into the ropewalk for a month. I finished one of the main mast now.

I'll go to the HMS Wolf ZL029 when I'm ready. Mixing paint and running ropewalk is one of my preparations. I think I'll start it after spring vacation.  Thanks for your interest, and I'll check your build log soon.

As before, this will be a speedy project rather than quality work.

This kit was released a year ago, and I bought it with full options, such as laser cut hulls and 3D printed blocks and canons.

You should check out other project by Jsk.

Nice to see you, Jsk. I prefer to learn new details by fast building, so please forgive the quality of my work.

I made some mistakes on the canon, but I won't fix them because there will be a chance to build another kit in the future.

I made micro sized belaying pins using black CA glue.

    The deck fitting is done.

This time, I finished fake rope hanks before rigging. The next step will be building masts and installing standing rigging.

Nice work on the color conversion. My only concern would be with opacity/transparency of the paints.

As you discovered the Shipyard kits include a brand of paints called Renesans, a Polish brand. They can be found online, but you usually have to order from Europe, and it can be difficult to find a seller that can/will ship internationally.

The Renesans acrylics have a slightly transparent quality to them, so you can see printed or laser-etched (burned) details through the paint. I like to use these paints for the Shipyard printed paper kits for this reason. Also, I've found that with lots of grinding and stirring, that I've been able to revive most of the dried Shipyard paint jars. But, it is a lot easier to just get new Renesans paints if you can find them.

Jo Sonja is a sub brand of Chroma inc in Australia. Norwegian brand since 1974. It is one of the most famous acrylic paint brands in Korea. Almost all of Jo Sonja's acrylic paints have a soft body, so it is very easy to convert to airbrush ink. I didn't expect that the Renesans is a brand name before I posted. I've never heard of it.

Most of the Jo Sonja paints are not transparent. It won't be a big issue because I'll airbrush them. I can control the amount of spray, and the result was pretty good in my previous experience.

Thanks everyone for advices on paints.

Hi, I don’t think all is lost here…..

Use toothpicks and fill in the gaps with Titebond.  Recommend avoiding covering large areas of the hull with filler, it’s a waste of time removing it, when just the gaps need it.  Think of the glue as oakum.

It’s good the planks appear to be thick.

Sandpaper can be difficult as is it will slowly round over the plank tops - see the bow.

I use files, flat and half round to work the hull.  Go 90 degrees along the plank to quickly remove wood.  Go lightly until you get the hang of.  With practice you will get great control, quickly removing wood.  Move the file parallel, edge along the planks, for finer control.

As Allenyed mentions scrapers work too….

Sandpaper is a drag, and not appropriate, when a lot of wood needs to be removed.  It can seem like after a lot of sanding nothing is happening and the planks have humps.

Here are a couple of pictures of a hull in progress demonstrating what’s possible.

Hang in there and good luck with it!

The lower planks are before working, upper have been worked….

Upper planks mostly done, lower planks need some work….

I made some color conversion charts for Shipyard kits. Some colors were dried when I opened the kit, and some colors are not enough to paint the hull based on my previous experience. I mixed my Josonja acrylic paints to make the same color.

The 100% color matching means nearly 100%, or 99% in reality. I don't need to be picky when I paint wooden grain patterns.

By the way, some pre-printed patterns have different colors from the kit's acrylic paint. For example, the red strips above the picture are different colors.

This chart will help if you want to paint bulwark in the same red color. Also, you can find more simple sail colors, such as the Josonja Background color series - Linen.

A useful tool, though I'm not familiar with that brand of paint. Perhaps it's only available in South Korea?
