HALF MOON by jct - FINISHED - Corel
maggsl_01 replied to jct's topic in - Kit build logs for subjects built from 1501 - 1750
Hello J nice to see an other builder doing the Half Moon. For me ist my first wooden model ship - and I like it really. Takes good Progress and is not too difficult. I have done the hull so far (and have some smaller mistakes I could not correct. Belongs to learning ) All in all ist a quite good kit. I wish you an enjoyable building and will follow your log Cheerio Max -
Hi all... very interesting thread... I just startet with building modelships from wood... Still do the Half Moon, but of course the Victory is on my wishlist (also Friedrich Wilhelm zu Pferde, Wappen von Hamburg, Endeavour and Berlin). So I am very curious about the opinions of our fellows... Good luck to all

Hello Anja, yes... come back to the shipyard. I startet the Half Moon two months ago and now I am almost ready with the hull. Its so amazing to watch the ship grow step by step... Cheerio´

Hi Walt difficult decision what to start up... I was thinking almost half a year about this. My favorite was the Corel Endeavour - but all Freaks told me, that it needs a lot of expierence to get along with it. Next was Karl and Marie by Krick, a very nice vessel with german roots - but at least my decision was the Half Moon, also by Corel. I am VERY satisfied, although I know that this kit is not the Nonplusultra. But for a beginner - it is also my first bulid - it is well-done, the instructions are quite good, the materials are ok, the sheets of plans contain all you need. And: There is a gigantic Network called "WWW". You are NOT alone So, if you like the Ranger as type of vessel, it will be as good as every other kit. Wish you good luck for your decision and a lot of fun whne you build your first boat Regards - Max

Howdy.... good progress I guess. The hull is almost done, only therudder has to be done and then the constructions on the decks. After this I can start with the masts and finally... OMG, I am so afraid ... the rigging. I still am not sure what kind of varnish I take. Whats your opinion? The Admiralitiy Colors offer a semi-gloss colorless varnish - either to aplly with a brush or as a spray.... pls help me I am really content with the building procedure, the instructions and the material so far. I Know that the Half Moon is not the very challenging kit on the market, but as a newbie in wooden modelling I think ist quite good. You come along with your decision if wooden ship modelling is the right thing for you. For me it sure is. I am very satisfied and ist makes a lot of fun to see the vessel grow step by step. Although there are some mistakes - I think ist not really a problem. I do the kit out of the box - with very little modifications. Happy new year to all around

Hello all together the port of the Half Moon is done --- he he..she turns into a Full Moon... I hope you all will appreciate that I used some nut-stripes instead of the original tanganica-Wood-stripes for the planking of the keel. Next will be the second part of the hull. The work goes on and on in a very satisfying matter... Comments are welcome CU

Hello all together Good progress... the second planking is not as difficult as I expected. Its tricky and you have to take good care for all the parts and the fitting... but isn't this the reason we all build such models? Its my first wooden ship and I have to admit: Its better than I thought. The result seems to become good although there are some mistakes I could not avoid. But all the life is for learning - and such is the building progress for the Half Moon. Some pics show the progress - hope you all like it. Comments are welcome cu

Hooray... Well, I decided to cover the planking on the inside of the deck instead just to varnish it or to let it with the original Wood. So I bought some 0.5/3mm-walnut-strips and started to cover ayll visible parts. I Think this will give the model a nice appearence. Still I am not sure how to treat the deck - Color, wax, varnish... Next step is finally to start the second planking. I tried some differnet ways to bend the planks and found out, best will be to dry the bent stripes with a hair dryer... thats quite quick and gives the Wood the perfect fit. Thats it for the Moment... be Patient Max

Hello again... the work on the boat goes on - and makes fun. Still I finished the first planking and have to sand it. Before I do I will continue on the deck and cover all constructions there. The deck planking is done too, waht was no problem. I am curious how the finish of the deck will work. I do not know yet what will be the best way to seal the planks there, what vernish will be the best. Perhaps somebody can give some good advice? I would like to preserve the wooden Color but also want a "used" impression... How do you test this? I dont want to use some color or varnish or wax (I think furniture wax can do a good job?) on the deck - and then be dissapointed about the result... I will cover the bulwark with wooden strips instead of the actual condition. Then I will use some filler on the irregularities on the hulls first planking and sand all... thx for your Attention

Hi all... I started the first planking of the Half Moon - and finished the lower part on starboard. The qualitiy of the Corel kit ist quite ok, I think, some parts (deck, some of the frames) could have been cut more exactly. But in the end ist ok and I could handle all quite good. I use knifes, pliers, a small hammer, the Amati planking machine that works really nice, needles and pins , sanding paper and a Proxxon multi-machine, what is really good for the first rough sanding. For the details and the smoothering of the surface I will use sanding paper. The work takes good progress. As this is my first wooden ship model I will build the ship out of the box. Next time, when my expierence with this special kind of modelling has grown, I will take more care of certain details and all this. I spend about 3 to 4 hrs every eveing in my shipyard (as my wife calls my room). Next step will be the first planking of the lower backboard, than sanding and complete the first planking with the upper sides. Up to now I had no Problems. But I am quite curious how the second planking will work... Thx for your attention cu - Max

Howdy all the work takes its time - but it goes on an on. I am very pleased with this kit. It gives me tasks zu fulfill, but in a way I can do. Even as I am not expierenced with wooden modelling I get along with it. And I can learn how to handle the materials and the things to do - like planking the deck or the hull. I enjoy the building very much Some pics show the progress of my Half Moon thx - max

Howdy Well - I did it: I started my first wooden model build. It took quite a time before I was sure to dare this. I build models for many years, started 40 yrs ago with platic planes etc. After a Long break I restartet with motorbikes, trucks, cars and dioramas. Especially the dioramas in the popular model train scale H0 gave me a lot of fun. I used bashed houses, my interest was the so called german "Wirtschaftswunder", the years after the war up to 1965. I am born 1960 - so ist a kind of looking back into childhood My topic was industrial life, harbour etc... with resin ships (Artitec). But for a Long Long time I am fascinated by historic model ships. Now I think I am old enough to enjoy a long time building, use and learn new techniques, improve my knowledge about ship history and understand a ship building as some kind of inner rest... I always want to know everything about the original. So I learn more about the time when the ships cruised the oceans under circumstances noone can really understand today. Thats very amazing. Now the bulidung has begun, the ship is wellknown, the kit also. I will sure ask a lot... e.g. is it better to plank the deck before or after fixing it? I will try to report regularly Thank you for your Attention Maximilian

Hallo --- get all aboard I have done it: I ordered the Half Moon by Corel, will be delivered soon (within 4 days they said). I was not sure if I dare to build a wooden ship indeed, but now the way is here and has to be walked. I will open a log - perhaps... not sure if I have the courage to show my first built to all this experts around here... But: There is no expert that became expert by birth. So I hope I can learn and get some help from the friendly shipyard owners in the world CU soon with a Half Moon

I love the log I decided to build the Half Moon by Corel as my first wooden ship-model. I hope I can start almost in the mid of November. I had to prepare my working room and know will buy some Tools. As soon as I start I will ask you ALL for help but I will tgry to puiblish a build log too to get tips, hints and improvement. Will be back soon
-
Hi Alex, beautiful work... Love the ship very much. I think I will start my ship-builder-career with this model. Your log makes me belief I can do this... thx Max
-
Hi Edward, want to introduce myself as a big fan of Mr Cook and his Endeavour. I want to build a Endeavour soon, but haven't decided yet what model kit will be best. I assume the Caldercraft will be best after all I have seen - although obviously every kit has its disadvantage (cannons...) I will forward to follow your log and to learn, see and amire Good luck Max
-
Hi Lieutenant Micklen as I am a fan of Mr Cook and his Endeavour I love your log. I want to do this ship too but have not yet decided which one... OcCre, Caldercraft, Corel, Mantua... So I am very excited to read and see the progess you make as help for a decision. And of course if you can give me some tips... I am open for that Good luck Max

Silly question? Better Corel or other manufacters?
maggsl_01 replied to maggsl_01's topic in Wood ship model kits
Hi folks... there are so MUCH beautiful ships I would like to build, so it is ok to me to start with a beginner-level-model. Not sure yet, as there are also a lot of interesting ships like Brig Supply or - as I am german and I was to the Baltic Sea I know the Kogge in real. What I am a little bit afraid of is the rigging. I do not want to use sails, but the rigging is something to fascinate me. But bulidling??? Wow... But again: I think I start on a level I can handle with a estimated time of about one year and then - if modelling wooden ships still satisfies me - climb up the skill-ladder ... I am expierenced with any kind of plastic modelling - esp diorama - and resin-ships (artitec) http://www.busl.de But historic ships are my dream. So I will do it ... M. -
Silly question? Better Corel or other manufacters?
maggsl_01 replied to maggsl_01's topic in Wood ship model kits
Thx to all... The Krick models are indeed very interesting, esp "Alert" and "Karl und Marie". I see I will start with a less difficult model like this ones or the one you all suggested. Now the time will be filled with looking at catalogues, looking into the portemonnaie, asking my sweet wife, which one she wants and at least buying. Next step will be my question about the necessary tools... -
Silly question? Better Corel or other manufacters?
maggsl_01 replied to maggsl_01's topic in Wood ship model kits
Thx Andy I am also thinking about to Level down at the beginning Perhaps a projekt like the Endeavour - unimportant which manufactor - could be a little too much... So I thought about the Brig Supply or indeed the Lady Nelson. I will take my time to decide... To start with a model that I will never end would sure be wrong... But the day will come... the big Endeavour Day -
Hi all... I am new to wooden ship-modelling. So I am not expierenced with the different manufacters of model-kits in this hobby. I think about the quality of model kits. I like the Corel kits from catalogues or the pics in the Internet, but I do not know anything about buliding, materials etc. And there are so many other companies that offer kits like Artesina Latina, Amati, Mantua, Constructo, Billing Boats, Caldercraft, OcCRe... I am sure you know them all. But which one is the best? esp when you want to start with this Hobby. I am not afraid of any challenge and I am old enough and patient enough to build such a model. But of corse I want a kit that helps me to get along with may very first model. I love all around Explorers like James Cook...so I want to build his Endeavour. Ok... thats it for the start. Hope you folks can help me a little for this decision Thank you Max
