Hi Mike, I agree with you and Brian completely. After my first build I am sure now, that this kind of modelling is the right hobby for me. I found out that the deal with the history of the ship, the history of naval affairs, the original ship building hundreds of years ago, the construction and the engeneering of the ships and as conclusion the model building itself is a very deep and satisfying way of passing the time. So my next step will be to increase the level of the model. The Half Moon by Corel is a great kit to start with this hobby - there are some difficulties you have to sail around and to find solutions, but all is possible without loosing the joy of building. But I know that there are quite more demanding kits So I will do the same as you say or Brian recommends: get expierence even in some kind of scratch work to improve the kits. At last the Friedrich Wilhelm zu Pferde is my absolute dream of a model ship - for the challenge to build it, the history and at least the great look. Best wishes Cheerio Max

HALF MOON by jct - FINISHED - Corel

Hi J your Half Moon Comes really good. I am so excited to see the final result... will always follow your log best wishes Cheerio Max -
Hi all... eeeheemmm... Addition to the very last entry I started - in my head - the next Project - the Galeone Roter Löwe, kurbrandenburgische Marine, um 1597, Mamoli 1:55. As mentioned before I bought a very popular (within the small scene of modellers for historic ships) book from the late 1970 (published in the former German Democratic Republic or East Germany). This book contains a lot of Story and knowledge behind the popular sorces - and 11 plates of drawings. Ist a perfect base for developing plans and ideas for the coming build. But now - indeed.... bye bye Half Moon Cheerio Max

Hello all my friend and followers this is probably the final entry to my build log. I have finished my Half Moon now - made a stand with the Amati board as base, two brass pillars and a brass plate with the ship's name. I layed down some ropes on the deck and fixed some in the shrouds - well, that's it now. As a kind of conclusion I realize this build as a great expierence. The first day, when I opened the box and just saw some wooden stripes, some pieces of precut plywood and a small box with all the fittings, blocks, yarn etc - I never thought that I would be able to create a ship out of this. Well, now, as the challenge is done I admit that this parts fit together to a adoreable model. It is my interpretation of the Half Moon - sure different to the models made by other modellers. I did the building mostly out of the box, only some parts as the inner planking were changed or the abnegation of any color (only the mars is black). For me it was important to see if I can do this kind of modelling as I had no expierence with this before. Sure I build a lot of kits - plastic like trucks, motorbikes, buildings (H0-dioramas) but wooden modelships are a world for their own. And I love this world. The Half Moon was the first wooden ship but sure it was not the last one. Next will be Roter Löwe by Mamoli - as soon as possible. I bought an quite old book with plans from wellknown german ships and will try to modify the Roter Löwe. Time will show if this works. I was overwhelmed by the kindness here in this Forum. All of you was so nice, so helpful, so funny all the time - even when I thought I will give in - there was someone to give me the kick to go on. Just to sit on the PC and watch the log of other modellers is so calming. Thank you all so much I proudly declare this log as finished :D Cheerio Max I created a gallery with some new and at least final photos from Half Moon 1609 Ship of Cpt Henry Hudson Scale 1:50 Kit by Corel CU

Hi Timo, I also got this very useful tool and did it use for the build of my Half Moon most all the time. I am very Content with it and say: For about 25 Euros you will NOT get any better than this. Multifunctional, secure, reliable - more you dont Need. I only can reecommend it. Cheerio Max

Hi Popeye, was a long time not here... had a lot of fun with my HM but also a lot of serious work to do .... your HM comes out really good. I like the galion and the mars... I am sure your HM will be very close to the wellknown rebuild in the US Good luck all the time Cheerio Max BTW - what would you recommend to save the models from dust? I think about a acryl hood... but will be about 110 euros... Second: Still haveto build a stand before I can take some pics for a gallery...

Hi... well... not sure yet, but I have a great sympathy for Mamolis "Roter Löwe". It seems to be a good kit - and the ship itself was a ship of der Kurbrandenburgische Marine - the only real navy in German history before 1850. Thes naval history of Germany is not to compare with England, Holland or at least Spain. But there are some remarkable kits on the market that give a good impression of that part of history from abou 1650 to 1800. Euromodels Derfflinger and Freidrich Wilhelm were part of this navy - just as Corels Frigate Berlin or Golden Yacht - all of them are on my wishlist So I will ask my secretary of financial affais - aka my wife - what ship will be possible. The Roter Löwe costs about 300 Euros - and tahts quite a lot just for a hobby. But on the other side - it takes its time to build it and has no costs to follow up. So we will se. For your information: The Friedrich Wilhelm is about 750 Euros, the Berlin 480 Euros. But I will make a break - spring has arrived, Summer will come, I love to be out with the dogs or on my motobike, in my garden there is a BBQ ... you see: It will be fall before I start a new project. I will take some more pics asap and build up a gallery soon Best wishes Max

Hooray to all out there in the world wide web This is just another little update. I finished the running rigging for the bowsprit and the foremast today. Well... I was so frightened by this challenge... but: I LOVE it. Doing the rigging is really a fun - all has a System, and when you understood the system its just a very satisfying - but tricky Job. It is great Next will be the mainmast... and the mizzen at last. And then... big tears... the boat is done... wooohooo A few pics will show the progress cu soon Cheerio Max

Hello to all my friends on MSW and everywhere I had a lot of work... ähem real work in the real life ... so I had hardly time to build and to update my log. Well, the times are a-changing and so I could do both today. I finished the Standing rigging the last few days... step by step and no more than about an hour a day. But I have time .. if I had the Money I have the time... I colored all Standing rigging black, the shrouds and ratlines are somewhere between bad and top - but as it is my first bulid I say ist quite ok. I learned a lot doing the shrouds and I am sure the next time it will be better. I used the original knot. Today I mounted the yard on the bowsprit (did not find the english word for it, in German it is Blinderah) and the rigging for it. I attached some pics to show the progress. I hope you like them. Best wishes to all Cheerio Max

Hi Vivian... I only can repeat what all the other fellow shipmen said: You do a great job with the planking - esp the deck. It gives an idea how the ship looked like when it was used. I think it is a fundamental question if one builds a clean... ideal-typical model (eg without colors...) or a more and more realistic model where you can even smell tar and sweat... pea stew and sauerkraut (against scurvy). I am not sure what way is the "right" one - but everyone is a good one Good progress - best wishes Cheerio Max

HALF MOON by jct - FINISHED - Corel
maggsl_01 replied to jct's topic in - Kit build logs for subjects built from 1501 - 1750
Hi J seems to work fine. Good idea. I used the metal Frames on my Half Moon to get a clearly defined opening. Before the gunport frames I used wooden strips - but I was not pleased. This is one of thge very few modifications on the model as I want to build my first ship out of the box - to see if this Hobby is good for me. Now I know... yes it is. So the next ships I will try to get closer to the origins resp try to scratch more Well done - good luck with your Half Moon Cheerio Max -
Hi all Thx so much for the compliments @jct i did buy the frames separately... Cheerio Max
