maggsl_01 got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in Half Moon by maggsl_01 - FINISHED - Corel - 1:50 - First wooden modelship
Hello all my friend and followers

this is probably the final entry to my build log. I have finished my Half Moon now - made a stand with the Amati board as base, two brass pillars and a brass plate with the ship's name.  I layed down some ropes on the deck and fixed some in the shrouds - well, that's it now.

As a kind of conclusion I realize this build as a great expierence. The first day, when I opened the box and just saw some wooden stripes, some pieces of precut plywood and a small box with all the fittings, blocks, yarn etc - I never thought that I would be able to create a ship out of this. Well, now, as the challenge is done I admit that this parts fit together to a adoreable model. It is my interpretation of the Half Moon - sure different to the models made by other modellers. I did the building mostly out of the box, only some parts as the inner planking were changed or the abnegation of any color (only the mars is black). For me it was important to see if I can do this kind of modelling as I had no expierence with this before. Sure I build a lot of kits - plastic like trucks, motorbikes, buildings (H0-dioramas) but wooden modelships are a world for their own. And I love this world.

The Half Moon was the first wooden ship but sure it was not the last one. Next will be Roter Löwe by Mamoli - as soon as possible.  I bought an quite old book with plans from wellknown german ships and will try to modify the Roter Löwe. Time will show if this works.

I was overwhelmed by the kindness here in this Forum. All of you was so nice, so helpful, so funny all the time - even when I thought I will give in - there was someone to give me the kick to go on. Just to sit on the PC and watch the log of other modellers is so calming. Thank you all so much

I proudly declare this log as finished  :D

    Hello again my friends

I have now at least finished the Endeavour.

I have changed all the sails rigging according to AOTS and now am quite content with the result.

Thank you all again for your Attention. I started this log (and the build) exactly one year ago. Now I will have a break before I begin with the Fregatte Berlin. But I will join the MSW regulary.

    Hello my friends

yes - it is done. My interpretation of Mr Cooks famous Endeavour is ready. I finished the build, only a stand (ordered) and a hood will be necessary. But this is just a final moment.

It is almost one year that I spent with the Occre kit. The building was always a fun to do although there were some tricky steps to take. Especially the instructions are something to criticize - and here indeed the instructions for rigging and the sails. They are too superficial and do  not show the details for many things.

Nevertheless - all at all I would recommend this kit with good conscience to a modeller with some expierence. You can improve the model with additional items like the buoys for the anchors, the covers for the windows  or additional rigging like the backstays for the topgallants. Therefore it's good to take a look at the AOTS Endeavour.

I will later take pics when the stand is done and create a gallery. The next time I will take a break until the next model will be on the desk. I am not sure if I start with the Friedrich Wilhelm zu Pferde by Euro Model orf the Fregatte Berlin by Corel. Well, let's see

    Hi together...

This is probably my last update of my Royal Caroline log. I am ready, have ordered the hood, made the stand and took all the pics for the gallery. The gallery will be open soon, perhaps I will upload the pics today, perhaps tomorrow.

I thank you all again - it was a funny and really good time. One of the pics show my two models - the Half Moon and the Royal Caroline - a nice small fleet with nearly the same scale. And the last picture gives an Impression of the next project - the Endeavour.

I will see you all again as soon as I start the Endeavour. This will be not before March.

Enjoy the pics and come by to my gallery the next days. I will follow several logs and stay online - of course. When you start wooden modelling... well, you can't stop it so easy

    Cheerio my friends!

Well - it is done. The Caroline is completed, as I think. The rigging is fixed, the lanterns are on their place, even the flag is allright. although I will try with my next ship to get some more realistic flags... But nevertheless - I like the flag as it is.

All in all I say - the kit by Panart is ok. There is a lot of possibilities to bash or to improve the build. I got swivel-guns, built a door beneath the stairs etc... only some small additions as you see. For me it was most important to improve my knowledge and my craftsmanship. And I wanted to create a model that is nice to look at under a Hood in my living-room. This is done.

I was a little bit dissapointed by the rigging plan - it Needs a lot of detective work to understand the drawings. This could be done much better as I think. But at least is also worked.

I thank you all who followed my log, thx for all comments, tips, hints and tricks. The next days when I have some more time I will do some additional pics and at last create an own Gallery for my Royal Caroline. I will have a break now for some weeks. I will be back some not so far away day with my next log - the Endeavour by Occre, which I want to bash more according to the AOTS.

Hello my friends an fellow men

just a little update with some pics again. Still working with the running rigging. But as I am working in the news business the past days left no time to relax and to care about my good old lady Caroline. All that terrorism takes my time away... But today I could finish the bowspirt and the biggest part of the foremast. So I thought I could be good to share my results with you There is nothing special to tell so far.  All takes its place as soon as I have found the place in the confusing rigging plan

Enjoy the pics and don't hesitate with any kind of comment.

    Hello my friends

this is the last entry in my build log "Fregatte Berlin", Corel, 1:40. I finished the work on this wonderful modelship. Most of the time the build was a pleasure.

    Some words about the kit:
The timber is good but I changed the 4/2mm stips for the hull into 7/1mm - this looks better and you can work with this strips better.
The prefabbricated parts like decks or frames are not state-of-the-art, but with some work all goes into place
The brass parts are quite good. I decided to paint them according to the color-scheme I found in the WWW. I like it but I do see that the colored parts can look a little bit like toys. But I don't mind
The plans are somewhere between good and awful. Especially if you want to put sails on to the the ship the rigging plan is  difficult to understand. As I did some ships before I got along - but a newbie will have problems. The drawings themselves are good.
The model needs some modifications - deck planking, additional parts, but this is whats modelling is for
Tricky was to change square bars into masts. I was surprised how good the result was at least.
I filled the space between the frames with balsa wood and got all togehther into the correct shape. I was not convinced that a single planking without a strong and stable substructure would work.

All in all as a conclusion: Yes, I loved this build (with some doubts as in any relationship ). It's a really nice model, quite impressing an authentic. The price is about 420 - 450 Euros in Europe. That's a lot and not approbiate imo - at least you have to buy some additional items like flags (the ones provided with the kit are not usable) or black yarn for the standing rigging.
No - this kit is not suitable for beginners. You have to know a lot (and I do NOT know enogh) about modelling period ships.

I would recommend this kit to everyone who wants to have a unique model, has enough expierence and a lot of patience.

I enjoyed the 18 months that I spent with the Fregatte  Berlin. It will adorn my office.

The next project will be  Fregatte Friedrich Wilhelm zu Pferde by Euromodel. This will be a real challenge, I expect a building period of at least three years. Just for studying the plans I will need a year...  They are so full of details.  I have all interpretives that Euromodel offer on their site and I did understand yet that very much of the parts have to be carved and made by myself. And that you can build  the ship "out of the box" or cahnge into a museum-like gem. I will decide for a way inbetween this extremes  But I will not start with the FW before 2019 or 2020. The next years I want to travel around the world.

That's it for the Moment, please enjoy the pics (you can find more in the gallery on NRG) and feel free to tell me what you think about my Fregatte Berlin.
I will follow the discussions on the board for sure - infected with the modeller's Virus

    Hello my friends

it's been a long time since my last entry. Well, I was busy with the sails. The rigging is going on very well, there is no real problem around. The plans could be more clearly, but if you take your time and read the drawings exactly you will have no problem with the sails.

I still have to make three sails then the Fregatte Berlin will be fiished. Some coils are necessary and some smaller jobs as always.

No more words - just enjoy the pics. They show the status quo (no... not the band :))

Hello Julian, sorry for the delay - was not online for some health reasons...

I just used an common pencil. I just spotted on the wood - thats all. Nothing special, no filling. Just patience - that is what you really need - but we build period ships, so patience is my second first name

    Hi mates,

just a little update. As I cought me a terrible summer cold with fever and all that stupid stuff I am in delay with the updates. I worked on the standing rigging and finally finished it. I love this work so much and I am quite content with he result. Especially the ratlines make a good impression to me. I used very thin yarn (.25mm) and this looks very nice. At least I fixed the anchors - but they need a lot of work to be done. The provided kit's anchors are nothing more than a useful base for the real anchors. I tried to get them a little bit more realistic, I also build up two buoys and additonal items. The flags are not fixed - I replaced the Corel flags with really good and high detailled ones and I also replaced the lantern with a beautiful one I found at the after-sales market. The Corel lantern is not good.

So I will go on with the yards, the sails and the running rigging soon. I think I will have two more months fun with the Fregatte Berlin.
Just enjoy the pics - and don't hesitate with critics and praise

    Hello my merry friends,

a long time passed by... almost four weeks since my last entry. I passed the challenge to fix the wales and to start the second planking in exact curvature according to the wales line. It was tricky to bend the wales especially the stronger ones. But I found a way with a lot of water, a new tool - a bending iron based on a soldering iron with a profile that gives perfect curves - and most of all a huge amount of patience. All in all I think the wales look quite good and the shape is exactly correct to the plans.

Indeed it's great if you have a strong hull construction so you can fix the wales with clamps in the right position. I made a pic to show how thick (almost 5 mm) the hull itself is. That gives freally a good basement for further work. In the pictures you will see minor gaps (less than half a millimeter in real - I used a macro lens to take the photos) that will have to be filled up later, and of course the wales have to be mended. But thats just a rainy day job. I stained the wales so the process of mending will not be too critical - just along the surface.

Nest step will be to construct all gunports and frames, after this I will start the second planking of the remaining hull. Still it's fun although Iit takes a lot of time - much more as spring starts and later summer will prevent me frm building.

As usual I attach some pice to show the progress my interpretation of Friedrich Wilhelm zu Pferde comes along.

Hello my friends and fellow mates,

again a little update. I started with the second planking. First I had to decide if the whales will be fixed upon the first or the second planking. I decided to fix them upon thre first planking. As piratepete says, the whales were historically mounted before the ships were planked. So the alignment of the planks oriented to the whales. It's a little bit difficult to get the right curvature and amount of bending - but it works. I stained the whales black, that gives a great look.

The big challenge of the whales still is to come when the wider whales (8mm/2mm) have to be bent. Actually I wanted to frame the gunports before second planking - but this would not work. You cannot fix separated parts of the whales - this would never work. And for the needed curvature of the planks it would also never give a satisfying structure. So I will cut off the planks and whales after the work is done and afterwards I will fix the frames for the gunports.
Next I will go on with the whales and the finish the second planking below the whales. Pretty nice work, I estimate some weeks, as I will have to sand the strips for a perfect surface, taper strip for strip, and then glue them and let the glue dry. But as you all know (and I think - love) building a period ship is like some kind of organic grwoing. And this will need its time.

As always - some pics show the start of the second planking (with some minor damages at the bow that will be repaired later)

    Cheerio

    Hello my friends

time for a little update. I was quite busy the past weeks for business stuff as in the company some major changes will have to be done in the next months... new boss, new littles bosses etc So I had not enough time for my hobbies. But now it's going on again.

I finished the first planking of the FW completely - inside with some spare wood as you won't see it after the second planking. But I think this additional effort gives some more stability to the whole construction. Sanding, filling, sanding - as usual. The next step will be to make the frames for the gunports and then I will start the second planking. We will see - springtime is here in Germany, weather conditions are good, a garden and the Admiral are waiting... so perhaps the second planking will take some time

All is good so far, I do net regret the build for a single second as it is just fun even when there are challenges - as to create the correct shape of the hull. But the plans are so amazing and show every detail - as small as it might be - but you have to study the plan very carefully. If you do it feels like a flashback into the 17th century on a big shipyard. You can almost hear the tools of the craftsmen, you can smell tar and the salty breeze from the ocean...

Some pics as usual - Cheerio
