Hi all, had a day off yesterday and spent it in the shipyard..  Shroud time.. Oh and i was wrong when i said all timber work was done!! had the lanyard strips to make up..

I had trouble getting them to all line up right even after lots of jigging and testing.. I had to take one pair off and redo them.. I am very pleased to have got a step forward, although i did some reading and perhaps i should have left the dead eyes loosened so i could take up final tension once other rigging applied..

I think it should be okay and i am planning to put satin gloss to set them..

I ended up using a card to get heights close to perfect alignment with channels I will use template to make sure lanyard strips go on paralell to channel..

    Regards Ollie

Looking really sharp Ollie. Is that kit supplied rope? It looks really good and if it came with the kit it would definitely qualify as better quality than most kits come with.

I will use the card to make sure lanyard strips are level and the same height on each side and set the way for ratlines..  Have a great day all... Ollie

Actually, the CORRECT way to tie a Ratline is to EYE SPLICE the two outer ones, and use Clove Hitches for the inner shrouds. The pics below show how I did them on my Norfolk Sloop :

The "Cow Hitch" (I can't remember if that's the correct name for this knot) is an alternative that looks much neater than a Clove Hitch for the two outer ones, as Janos mentioned. Here's how to tie them :

Note the tails of the Cow Hitches are both on the lower part of each knot, meaning that the two knots are mirrors of each other.

Yup the guns are great Ollie, and even a small frigate can be a handful! Be happy, ya did good! Even merchant ships carried at least 1 gun for signaling, they are or were used in many places.

I have also fitted my lower deadeye straps. Just need to get my canons rigged properly, and I can move on with shrouds.. :-) you can see the spacing jig I have made.. Ollie

Thanks each and every one of you .
Yes it's a bit of a chore Banyan.. I.need those spiders.:-)

I've been catching up on some other pastimes with some lovely winter sunshine.. Climbed some mountains, kayak down a stunning river. Beach and creeks..

John, thanks mate, I made up the spacing jig like you suggested because that really made a lot of sense to me... All my pictures show row boat as I have done. Interesting..

Alistair I can't decide either.. Think that the timber side just wins.. :-)

Leanne, I really hope you get her back in action! I should be able to help with some issues if they arise with the building... Looking forward to it..

So I have procrastinated a lot with my canons rigging. The dinghy was a escape I think.. Okay whipped myself into action today and not far off having them done... Just have to decide how to tie them off and if I will do coiled ropes..

    Much thanks. Oliver

Ok canons are on the way.. Thinking it's much better. Big learning curve these finer points. It all just fits in there.. Couldn't have had tackle points any closer..

I read that it's much easier to add rope coils separate and just lay it over the existing rope, if that makes sense.. Regards ollie

olliechristo reacted to wefalck in Slackening/tightnening Rigging
What's wrong with slack standing rigging ? In real life it would not be as tight as a tight-rope - it is a bit of a misconception we are used to in modelling. Rigging always sags a bit under its own weight, because you would pull out all fastenings or push the mast throught the keel, if you would try to tighten it, as we do it as modellers by aesthetic habit.

The difficulty though is to get the slack into the right direction - downwards.

Great outcome on the cannon rigs Ollie. Spot on to my eye. You're lucky to only have two to do but now you've cracked it onto a 74 gun ship for your next model?!
