    Hi All,
I haven't forgotten MSW, I thought I'd drop in to say that apart from the usual distractions, I've had a couple of unavoidable delays to the Endeavour project. Work was one of them but the main one has been that my wife has been unwell and I've been helping her out a fair bit where I can. I've done a little bit of work on the model since my last posting but not enough to take a photo and post it on MSW, I'll get back to it soon enough but in the mean time, I hope that you are all well and happily progressing with your projects.

Have a great day and Happy Friday. Cheers,

    Rowan D.

    Hi All,
God bless the rain and a lack of work. The start date of my next gig has been postponed by a couple of weeks so I thought I'd catch a terrible man lugry (Flu or something similar) and lay about the house for a week then do some work on the model. While laying about, I pondered over drilling the baluster holes and getting them into some order of uniformity (edge distance and alignment) so I manufactured a drill guide out of some Tasmanian Oak dowel, cut a slot the width of the gunwhales into its base, drilled a hole down the centre, so that I could locate the baluster holes uniformly in the gunwhales. I cut out the side so that I could see the position of the drill on the gunwhale before drilling the hole to ensure correct position. I've attached a couple of photos. It's all fairly rudimentary but it worked. I also decided to do some painting at the same time so here's a couple of photos of where I finished up to-day. I sat the balusters in position on the Starboard side to see how they'd line up and Port side has the baluster holes drilled. To my relief, they lined up pretty well.

I hope you're all fit and well and you can avoid that man lurgy.

    Cheers,
    rowand.

    Hi All,

This is my first wooden kit build ship. I chose the Endeavour becasue of its historical value and it looked like a good, interesting kit. I started it some time ago and I've taken some breaks along the way, sometimes because of other commitments and sometimes because I had to figure out the next step in construction. I have appreciated viewing other modeller's work and thought that I'd start up this build log to re-pay the debt and exchange ideas.  Thank you for stopping by and have a great day,

Your comments and ideas are most welcome.

    Cheers,
    rowand

Thanks guys.. I won a bid on the 1:60 Al kit, think I got a great price for. $160 including delivery.. It's been shelved since the mid 80's. Not sure if this means a good purchase or not.. We will see.. I'm thinking the older kit may hold some "old school good quality" or some old materials with quality issues.. Either way I will be bashing I'm sure, so I just hope the hull shape is close to correct.. Regards Oliver

There's also the CalderCraft one. I've been following a build of this on MSW for some time:

    Hola,

I made the Artesania L. Endeavour a couple of years ago, adding some extra details by my own.  As always there are little flaws in instructions and materials, but nothing serious.  You can see my model in the Gallery (pointing in my signature).  Hope it serves of some help.

I have also fitted my lower deadeye straps. Just need to get my canons rigged properly, and I can move on with shrouds.. :-) you can see the spacing jig I have made.. Ollie

Thanks John,Tom, Alistair and Bindy :-)

So.. I have finished my first scratch build ;-)

I have added a painter and my first coiled rope. everything you see is hand crafted including the eye bolts which are my smallest yet, the thread had trouble going through. :-) they are tricky to get right though. Need some very pointy round pliers me thinks.

All the bits are there to rig her on the davits but think I will get more done on the rigging before mounting.
    Regards Oliver

Sorry about the lack of recent updates folks.. been a bit busy around the house in the decent weather      ok ok you got me.. I've just been lazy too

Oh and I'm contemplating upgrading my already upgraded deck timber (if that makes any sense  , there seems to be quiet a bit of inconsistency in thickness between the timber, I have been grouping similar thickness' together but am dubious over going ahead as it could be a sanding nightmare ! as I mentioned before there were substantial thickness differences even with the upgraded timber whilst planking the hull, but sanding that was easy-peasy , the deck on the other hand is very confined as ye all know!!!)

    Just a quick update...
Finally got the fairing underway... planking next (in a week or two).
The written instructions talked about removing the deadwood area on the keel at the stern, but the 'how-to-dvd' didn't mention it at all. Went ahead and did it anyway, figuring the written instructions are likely more up to date.

    She's coming along nicely, Ollie.

Just a totally trivial point - did you know that for some totally unknown reason most boats stowed on stern davits are stowed with their bow to starboard?  It's not a rule and it's not invariable practice, but it just seems that most boats are stowed that way!

Re your deadeye spacer;- that's the type used by Harold Underhill, but I've found that a 'single hole' type spacer is a pest as the deadeyes keep trying to turn around the spacer while you're working on them.  Try a 'two hole' type for comparison.  Get a small scrap of wood and, using a deadeye as a jig, drill two small holes spaced so that they line up with the two parallel holes on the deadeye at each end, spaced so that the deadeyes will be the correct distance apart.  glue short pieces of wire into the holes and the spacer can then work by holding two holes on each deadeye, preventing them from turning when you put tension on the shroud.

Just catching up on your log - fantastic work Ollie.
Though not expecting to achieve quite the same level of skill as you are working at, you've prompted me to consider resurrecting my own stalled Mermaid build.
Thanks for taking us on this awesome journey with you.
    Cheers

Looking brilliant Ollie. I can't decide which side of the hull I prefer - they both look so good. The rigging of the boat off the stern davits looks spot on. A great model in every respect!

I love rigging it really separates the men from the boys. It shows the effort one wants to put into the ship. I've seen "outstanding" and some "not even a good try" rigging, I especially like the "I really tried" type the best! And believe me it shows! So I am expecting to see some good things from you!!  GOOD LUCK!!
