Keel #1 is now complete. My daughter came over this morning, as I was getting ready to install the Fish Well covers . And she said that she liked it better without the covers as they cover up to much of the deck. (its going to be her's she does not know it yet ) so they have been left off. this is about the end of this build log . Just some comparisons between the Kit and scratch (Keel 1 ) are left . Here are the results

Hi Bob, After Dec 25th I will just Have Keel #4 , they are all for Family members , The Kit is for my oldest Daughter ( she unknowingly picked all the colors) and my youngest Daughter Gets Keel #1 (shes 32) and my sister will get Keel #2 She loves Blue, and My Wife gets Keel #3, so It leaves me with the boat I wanted when I started this project, ( it wont be finished on time and my Wife is patient with Hers) there are some Sailors in my family Best Regards, Pete

The Plan was to show you a finished Keel 1, Instead My Wife informed me that there are 12 Days till Christmas,( and I have not got anything for my Father in law ) He's a bigtime Fisherman so I decided to build him The 16 foot San Jaun Dory. I am building it in a 3/8" = 1'-0" , Its a very quik project (so I wasnt going to do another build Log) so kind of a build log in a build log (about 2 days) I used the magazine page (from Wooden Boat) as the plans, here are the results

This Morning has been exciting so far, as I am setting up the Frames on Keel 4 , I thought I would show some pics before I glue it together . I always set my base level to the waterline, That way all the frames are plumb to the waterline. (just remember square is square and Level is Level) Here are the results

Hi Harvey , in my research on the fish wells the Chapelle info is vauge, My guess is that , It was left open to the custmer purchasing the Boat. However the Fishwell section between frames 2 and 3 is correct (as per the Kit Build) I agree that the Midwest covers are to small as well as being to far forward of the Cockpit. Best Regards, Pete

Today all the work was done on Keel 1 , I the blocks that I stained yesterday , and using the same wrapping of the blocks with string (I showed how I made them in a previous build log)I made up all thge blocks needed Then I made a new tiller and still have to finish it ( its just been rough cut) all the masting is complete with the exception of the Boom being installed . I purchased some better thread for all the running rigging (it looks more like rope) The mast is set , the only thing left to make is the fish well covers . I am also giving a few comparison shot's between the kit build ( White Hull dark Cockpit/Cabin Coaming) Here are the results

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
