  1. I think you can be pretty contented with your result despite your misgivings. It looks well designed and executed from the photographs and I'm sure, many years hence, you will feel proud of having made a silk purse out of what you considered to be a pig's ear! Congratulations on a fine bit of modelling.
  2. Hello Caroline. Good job, as usual! Nice touches in personalising your build. Kind regards from the Canaries.
  3. The nettles were braided to form a fan shape that opened out to the stretcher. A hammock makes a very cosy bed, I slept in one for many years!
  4. "Surprise" will be my next major build so I'm following your log with interest. I really like that planking scheme and if you bring that level of detail to the rest of your build you will end up with a superb model. Regards from an exsaffer.
  5. Interesting log. Like your detailed explanation and the work is pretty good too. Look forward to the rest.
  6. Looks promising to me, Thom. Open a build log and let's see how we can help.
  7. If you open a build log you will attract a lot more attention and gain access to a lot of useful info. And possibly encourage other newbies to take up the hobby.
  8. One way to overcome the keel colouring is to think about staining the hull below the waterline either off white to simulate tallow or black to simulate tar. Hull protection was a real problem for wooden ships and these were the accepted methods used in the time of Coloumbus. I agree with other posters that differing shades of wood are a positive feature rather than something to be concerned about. Each modification that results from error or design makes your Santa Maria unique.
  9. Larry, I'll be happy to help but the best place to get assistance is on the kit building log forum. I only picked up your query by luck so why not open a build log and give us the opportunity to watch and enjoy your progress?
  10. Edited upon examining your last pic more closely. I believe that that you have set the "bulwarks" too low. I think you'll find that the bottom edge of the profile should sit on the top of the maindeck line.
  11. Hi Sephiren. As there are no details of the actual Santa Maria we have to speculate using other known designs of ships of that period. I put both a camber athwartships and a cant fore and aft. What does that mean? It represents a bow as you've noted going port to starboard and and a tilt upward from astern to the stem. All designed to shed water off the maindeck as fast as possible. I've recently recovered the pics from my build log so I'll be putting together a selection to post on the completed kits gallery. In the meantime I'll be happy to help where I can.
  12. Hola Juan: Saludos de Tenerife. Excellent work on both those ships. By the way, someone on this new forum has an archive one of your build logs under your old forum name.
