Omega1234 reacted to Jond in Charles P Notman 1894 by Jond - FINISHED - 1:48 scale - RADIO - Downeast Four-Masted Schooner built by Percy Small
It has been many months since I have worked on Charlie.  Since reviewing her sailing poor performance and the effort to get her around, I sort of retired her to the shop

here she sits since last September.
Now that I am done with heavy lifting on the BHOD sloops I have some time to catch up and see what I can do. Also my work style is to be happier if i am working on three or more things at a time.   Confusing to many but it is good for me.   Example  I am also doing research , building a fast kit etc on the BOWDOIN, my planned winter build for next year as well. too early to start a log though.

So I want to keep track of progress and problem solving on Charlie because as stated in the beginning of the log I hope to build replicas of at least one schooner built here in Boothbay Harbor. This is sort of an amateur practicum.  These updates will not be many or often but when I get some time I need to continue to make her look great.  More importantly I am learning more about these schooners so with some help I can build another better one.

come summer all things will be set down other than racing sloops for real sailing.

So what I am doing now is working on the planned back side of the model.  Thus as I building things I learn here and then when I turn her around starboard, the main display side, will get a second chance.  The first example is the head stays all need to be installed after I turn her around so they are in front of the sails.  I may have trip lines but they are really for display.   Also the top stay stay sails will be set after the standing rigging is completed. they fall out to port as well.

maybe I should reconsider the stationery aspect of all this  and make it possible to change tack for the display.

Regardless standing rigging is the next priority.

here I have added the missing shrouds and turnbuckles on the port side.
    Ratlines

there are many discussions and I even found a topic on this wed site on ratlines. The consensus was 15 inches for merchant vessels.  That would be 5/16 vs 1/4" in this scale.  I have many photos and I must say they look even taller in the photos.  On reason they could have been even taller is by this time there is only rare repairs that would require accessing the mast tops.  All sailing is done from the deck level.  Two detail books including the anatomy series on the four masters are all silent on this point.  i have chosen 15 inches and it look right to me.

Also with the advent of the turnbuckle and steel cable shrouds they ratlines were slats. I have chosen 1/32 x 1/16" strips to use and to tie and white glue them.  I believe CA is death on lines and the diluted white fabric glue works good and fast. it also dries clear .

I have decided to make a daily session.  on the low end I will add 12 ratlines.  it takes about an hour and is quite tedious.  also it lets the glue set up.
here I have done two sessions. taking pictures helps because I see too much line after snipping.  I will need to come back with an ex-acto and trim better.  I imagine i could use smaller thread. I am using this size because every 5th ratline gets the line extended out to the sides. Also I think after I stain the ratlines darker, the black line will look OK.   we'll see
    OK of the races

    Cheers

I thought that I would show a couple of comparison shots between # 2 and the current build, # 2 is currently on the market ( Ebay )and I wanted to get a few comparisons before she ( # 2 ) goes to her new home

Thank You, Piet, I let the first one Sail ( she is now in Florida ) I am pleased with the set of Sails for this boat

Hi David B., The material for the sails is a Sport cloth with blue ripstop nylon trim

Thanks John, I had a lot of fun that day, I did a series of sea trials for the first boat, wich was part of the build log. She sailed very well

Thank you, Nils, The Sails for this boat turned out better than on the previous 2 builds.

    Best Regards,
    Pete

After a busy week ( wich still continues ) I have managed to squeeze in a few hours here and there in the Sail Loft. Ironically, Out of all the Boats I have built, Only the Buzzards Bay 14 have I made Sails for every time. ( This was pointed out to me by Kate ) After many failed attempts, I am pleased with the Sail set for this boat. ( Main and Jib ) I thought I would show the set from the previous Builds. ( # 1 is the Boat in the water) Here are the results

    Goal:

    And result

Not exactly in scale, obviously little oversizeing was necessary.

It is just amazing: in scale 1:100 spokes which in nature has 3-5cm dia, , on model will have 0'3-0,5mm dia. Just impossible

I was thinking about inner brass ring you can see on upper photo, to simulate with gold color, but think there is no point. Hairline circle can not be seen, and everything thicker than hairline would be too shiney.

    Hi Nenad

It`s just great, how you made it. The trick with the light diluted glue is superb, noted that for my next wheel, Thank you! to be serius, you know what you can do, when you try. Thats how I make it all the time, and mostly it works. Keep on going, I like that built!

    Thank you everybody !!!!

I have to admit that i was quite excited discovering that I can do that. This beasts (spokes) are really really small, rings are very very thin, and whole structure is fragile as "dragon glass" meeting white walkers. luckily I am not Samwell Tarly , the killer

There was a question how to fix rings and center circle where spokes meet during sticking ...

Using needles was out of question in this scale and material, for three reasons: first - needle looks like a chump toward this gentle structure, and I was afraid that putting needle in will break this tinny ring. Second, needle left hole after, and that opened filling question. Third - needles (2 or 3 with one for middle section) reduce work space in the air above and make it more difficult for work. So, I dilute white glue with water, and glue first ring above drawing. On this way I get weak connection, but still connection, who keep all parts together until glue dry and harden, and to remove paper and weakened glue will be easy. On that way also resolved how to transpose exact positions for spokes on ring, because, their positions are right under on drawing !!! Similar method I have used making six windows on skylight for aft-deck house

Glue (white glue this time) was applied on spoke bearing and on center circle as little drops from toothpick top. It was tricky to get right spokes lines on this scale.

I agree Patrick, I am also satisfied. Maybe it can be done a bit precise, but ... this little wheel can stand on a single button on your PC keyboard, and you can see curves on spokes only if you get your nose very very close or with magnifier. Nobody can see in regular way that "stomach" on spoke No3 is a bit wider than "stomach" on spoke No 5, and a bit higher than a "stomach" on spoke No 8.

I forgot to tell that I was mentored by Albus Dumbledore ... in my dreams ... I was bad student and i was thrown out from Horgwarts after only one night, but something what I learned, obviously stayed

So do I, Cap. Right now, I am sitting in office, and instead to work, I am obviously on MSW, thinking: to work - or wheel - or work - or wheel ... weekend in front, and I will achieve all I planned, but right now ... to work - or wheel - or work - or wheel ...  I must visit Dr Peer this days ...

You overstate, Mark. Just discovering something I could be very glad to find in the very early start of my build. Far far away to be master. Maybe in another life (if I do not reincarnate as mushroom)

Could I say that your work inspired me, Piet ? thank you for being here on MSW

Thank you David. your miniature work share quilt as inspiration, also. I shall never forget in my life your microscopic card works

Hey Gerhard, you are main culprit and encouragement of execution !!! Without your pushing, I`d probably stayed with Cu wire as spokes. So, guilty as charged !!!!

A very very big thank you !!!!

Good find on the wire.  Just because it doesn't say it's hobby supplies doesn't mean it won't work.

thanks to all of you fine folk....and those who hit the like button.   I had looked......and the last entry on this build was 2014...heck,  I probably have one longer than that.  I shouldn't be surprised.....my tangent with the Andrea Gail.......the small jaunt with the Black Diamond {cute},  and the continuance with the Jingle Belle...time just flies by.  I'll get an idea of what to do next and go for it........who knows what else

thanks Patrick,  Nenad,  Piet,  and Pat.   I had to kick myself.......looking for the right wire.  I bought some bailing wire,  thinking that it would work.......it's too big!  now what am I going to do with 5 pounds of wire.   so far,  I've been using it as a weight,  but I think there is more I can use it for.  quite a while ago,  I had bought some floral wire....can't remember what I got it for.   it ended up getting stuck in a box and forgotten.   after making the discovery with the MIG wire,  I recalled having it and dug it out.   I found that it would work just as well!    welcome to Brainphart, USA

I get that a lot Mark....how do I do it.   well,  it's not as bad as you might think.......it's more an exercise for the memory banks.   once I open a kit,  the frame is built.......all the while,  thinking of all the thing I could do with a hull like that {day dreaming on a huge scale}.   if I'm going to save the parts panels for the hull parts,  I put them away in a separate box {a big box}.....{I probably have the hull panels for several ships}.   the rest of the panels are broken up and put in a boot box.  I go through a pair of two of boots a year,  so the boxes add up.  they are labeled and put in the closet.

the only kit not shown here is the Thermopylae....it's still in it's box and on a higher shelf.   the strip wood is separated and put in plastic sleeves,  and labeled according to size.   most kits are made up with the same size woods,  so this also prevents my running out of a particular size.   what else I need,  I get from HobbyTown or Hobby Lobby....or I'll order it from Billing USA  {the site is still up and running}.   the flat stock is more the trouble spot,  so I get a few sheets here and there to keep the inventory fresh.  the rack is made up of shipment tubes and paper towel tubes cemented into a board,  different size hole made with a hole saw.

the fittings and stuff are kept with the kit........there are occasions though where I will rob from them.  I replen the part as soon as possible.   what I do order and the extras I acquire are kept in a separate inventory box.  I use my admiral's spent pill bottles for this,  to keep them organized.   toilet paper tubes are cut in half and cemented in rows inside a boot box to keep the m in order.

I uncluttered the tables........good to get a fresh perspective on things.  the cabinet on the left hand side under the smaller table is a new addition to the work station.   the admiral got a new desk,  so I took the two lower parts and put them together.   it has two cubby holes and two drawers.....it will help me from having to use the hallway for added storage.   it will keep stuff closer.

well......that's my method........and my work station.   there are still a few things I'd like to add to it........like power tool,  but it's home and I like it

well.......back to planking?........painting?..........cutting?..........cementing?...........and the dreaded......sanding?   I never know what I'll get myself into.
