Omega1234 reacted to GLakie in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
The stern looks splendid Mark. Getting the rest of that taffrail closed up sets her off and gives it that "almost" done feel!

A minor update, model wise. A biggie for me. The stern is more or less complete. It still needs the carvings and the taffrail needs the finials but those are in-work and may be that way for some time as I move on to other things. I carve while waiting for glue to dry, etc.
I was playing with the camera and some settings... here's the inboard side of the stern unplanked and then planked in silver maple. I'm using the maple where things would have been white-washed. The planked version also shows part of the taffrail installed.
From the outboard side with part taffrail installed.
This is the two other pieces of the taffrail on the scroll saw using the ScrollSander to clean off the laser char and finesse the fit. The final finessing was using a file and sanding sticks.
And with the full taffrail installed. It needs a bit of cleanup and some wipe-on poly, but I'll that when get the carvings ready. The quarter galleries need to be built also before finishing. It's a bit off (about 1mm on the port side) but I'll live with it.
All in all, I'm pretty chuffed about this as it was a big learning curve. I wanted the joinery perfect.. not quite there yet but to my eye, it looks good. Next up is the rudder while I sort out the quarter galleries. These have a bit of unusual shape in that they curve out past the stern and then back to the hull, like a half circle only not... Hard to explain but I'm researching and sorting it out.

Nothing works like elbow grease Mark. Nice work. I'm becoming super envious of the laser cutter though. How long til Father's day when I can make up an excuse to buy something else? Heh

I'm looking forward to seeing that taff-rail decoration (made with your DeathStar) really pop once a bit of paint has been added !!

A little elbow grease, a little sand paper... Yep.. have that in abundance. The cutters are a good tool but I find that I still need the other tools also. I think I need some sessions with Dr. Per.
Well.. no go on the decorations from the Deathstar. What needs to fit is pretty darn small but I have some ideas that might work... <fingers crossed> As for paint...
I was fussy before I started this and well before I got the Deathstar.

Omega1234 got a reaction from mtaylor in 24' gaff-rigged ketch by vaddoc - FINISHED - Scale 1:12- exploration - a Tad Roberts design
Hi Vaddoc
Nice work, but, not having a glass case could be a problem once those cobwebs start to grow.
More importantly, if this is only your second model, then you've already set the bar very high. Very impressive to say the least!
All the best

Omega1234 reacted to NenadM in Cutty Sark by NenadM
Finished, ready for painting. Really small, comparing to ciggarete and toothpick
Here is result of compromises, step by step
All from bamboo. Curves on pillars are shaped with rottary tool, the rest is done by my fat fingers, and lasts almost four hours of work

Wellcome Greg, and thanks for nice words. I hope you'll enjoy in this looooong voyage from mistake to mess ans back
Hello Ian. I agree with you, too, but there has to be "a couple" of lines and ropes, and this option with small pins just will not looking well. Just thinking ... ropes which ended on that pinrails has 1-1,5cm, max 2cm dia, considering to photos. Also, there are some chains (!) with simillar diameter. My scale is approx. 1:100 which means - ropes and chains 0,1-0,2mm dia !!!! And I didn't find and have no opportunity to see any modeler working with ropes which are so thin. So, compromises just have to be done -

Thanks Denis. There was just thoughts. I have some minor experience with rigging (Santa Maria, Stella and Jolly Roger) and I know exactly what you are pointing to: zero tension. Just proper words for this

I see it shows anchoring to the deck......and line tension doesn't need to create a musical note. you want to keep the tension around +0 as much as you can. you could use the smaller one.......the anchoring will make it stronger. but if you want to be sure.......there is a + or - that you can go, as far as scale goes. whatever you feel comfortable with, my friend
