thanks for the good word and the likes!   I'm getting closer to the trawl rig placement.......I can't wait for that!

Mark:    that's why I was glad to see the black show thorugh somewhat on the cable.......a bit more texture.  I have some tans........but I was also thinking about striating some copper on it.....might put a rusty look to it as well     I don't want to get too heavy with the weathering though,  i'm not an expert with it just yet.

Marty:   thanks for the tip......next time I'm at Hobby Lobby,  I'll check it out.  they have a very large glue selection.   I've had that bottle of window maker for quite a long time now.......this is the first time it's ever failed me.

Piet:     I'm going to make the segment cuts a little wider.....but still at the same angle.  the curve should be a more 'half circle'  shape......these will come out looking like a candy cane..........a very weird idea is beginning to brew here {Holiday Harbor}.......best not to dwell on exestential thought

Yes I hope to place it onboard today to check out the stroke length and take another video. Thanks for all your help Patrick I don't know why this website won't let me copy and paste, maybe it has something to do with my anti virus.

Hi Patrick, I definitely won't throw it out. Might come in useful somehow.

Finished f'cstle and poop deck railing this arvo. I've used 1.6mm plastruct rod to make up the stantions and rails. Stantions first cut over size and measured in drilled holes in the capping rail. Once correct height, glued and let to set. The rail also made of plastruct rod, shaped and attached to stantions once dry. Painted, all done.

Thanks very much Patrick. The galley and engine room would be seperate models displayed outside of the ship itself. The engine room sits under the chart house and the only way to see the galley would be through the fan hatch, so you wouldn't see either even with lighting inside. Still planning on making them once the main model is completed.

Now for another small update, derricks and bulwark supports painted and have started to rig the derricks just with the man rope for now.

    Hi Anton

Superb as always! Are you still going to furnish the galley, engine room, etc? If so, you'd probably want to tackle them before doing the masts and rigging.

that was a lot quicker than with Vista........down and back up in no time!   I also need to make vents for around the fore deck.......three of them.   these are unlike the normal vents seen on larger ships......they look like nothing more than curved pipe.  I had bought some hollow round styrene,  but it's too large.....so,  I'm going to do it from smaller size dowel.   I cut a bunch of angled pieces......I put the puzzles together later

during all this,  I had filled the openings of the spot lights with window maker.   enough time had passed......lets take a look..

    .......

Oh........say it isn't so!   the bubble broke in the middle!  the other one?.......

I'd say it gone from bad to worse...this is not good    I guess the opening is too large a span for the maker to work!  it's a good thing I have a backup plan........we'll get back to it later     meanwhile.......back at the vents.

I began to piece together the bit to form the curve.......I think I need to make them with just a little more length.

I'll need to make some more.......I'm on the right track though,  so that's a good thing.  since the lights were a bust,  I might as well get the window maker out of them,  before it totally dries......at least I can salvage them.

out of all this.....there was at least one small ray of light.......the orbcom GPS module

Both derricks now made up. And attached to bases with hand brake. These are used mainly to launch the two dorys which we use as our tenders. Also both of these derricks are an identical copy of each other, rather than mirror image so that steel cleat which is on the same side of the derricks shaft are correct

Directly in front of the centre rear davit, will be a life raft and emergency tiller mounted to the deck. So I've added chafing gear, which is 18mm hemp rope lashed to stop one of the blocks from the mizzen sheet rubbing against the davit itself.

Hi everyone!!! Wow and many thanks for your support, encouragement and Likes.

It's always a good feeling to receive your feedback, because it spurs me on, as it must for all of us whenever feedback is received.

Igor - the file I used is a small metal file with fine teeth. Aluminium is so soft, that the file cuts through it like butter. Once I got into a rhythm, it was pretty easy to churn out one after the other.

Elia- your comments and feedback are always greatly appreciated. Please stop by whenever you can.

David - that's a good idea about the six pack...why didn't I think of that??

Dave - thanks for your comments and kind words. Greatly appreciated.

Dennis - many thanks. My intention is to replicate as much as I can on this build. Not only is it a challenge, but it's good fun as well. Your AG (in terms of commitment to detail) would be exactly the same, I'm sure.

Row- Aaaagh! You've got me worried now about the winch heights. All I did was to measure them off the blurry low resolution drawing (see first page of this log). Perhaps the winches weren't drawn exactly to scale. Oh well, I'm not redoing them! I've got no more finger nails left from all the filing!

Seriously, thanks for all comments and feedback.

here is an interim step to get ready for decking.  call it step 10 part 1  as there is more to do before general decking

    complete flyrail
This was a fun project. As I showed last time the first turned flyrail posts were too big,  so I went back to the lathe and reworked those previously done and continued to run the production line. I laminated the taft rail using 1/32" basswood. I soaked it and set it with pins to dry.  I glued the first one and then as I added the rest to shape, their wetness undid to glue....oops. Anyway adding more pins and clamping saved the day.  The side rails were ripped down hard wood.  I also had to cant them 10 degrees.  Before gluing it down, I used my mini drill press [ my new present to myself for the year].  Then I glued and nailed the rail to the water plank leaving the 1/16" projection.  I then took soft copper wire and super glued it into the holes [ see photo]. I took the turned posts to the band saw. I marked out lines at 22 degrees and then placed a mark at mid points of each post.  I then turned them 22 degrees and cut them out. I set up quality control after cutting and had to take 10% and touch them to the sanding disk. I then took them and drilled small holes in the bottom to accept the setting pins. A little more super glue and turned posts were glued both to the pin and the rail. I set the 3/16" x 1/16" basswood fly rail as a guide to help line them up.   Despite checking them there were still several that needed 1/32 shims to fill in to the fly rail. Also a little filling was needed as some for the holes drilled into the small posts came through. I set the straight turned posts at the taft rail and used 5 pieces of plank to tie in the rail.  I carved it to shape and wow! After painting the rails we are on our way....not sure where ..but definitely it's a boat.
    pre decking
I found much conflicting information while researching decking.  In general the plans show this schooner was done in 4"x4"s.  In subsequent years they upped the deck to 5"x4" and then some at 6"x4".  Also the 6 "king" planks using 6"x4" showed up on all but the plans for Charles Notman.    I decided to install the 6 each 6" inch [ 1/8"] planks as I set the masts holes and some key furniture.  I also decided to order new 3/32" X 1/16" basswood for the planking. I am OK milling down to 1/8" but am concerned for quality at thinner.  I needed to complete the forward house. To do that I needed the side winches, so I went back to the lathe. I had fun turning down simple dowels with files to get the shape. I penetrated the house with copper wire again and am ready to glue them up. I turned the two foc'sle winches. I tried different woods and failed, so for now [ then easily be replaced when I learn better] I filed down a 3/8" poplar dowels.  I used a brass nail head and cut a brass screw head to make the tops. I ended by making the fore & aft bitts and steering house.   I set the small forward deck at the fore bitts.   I built a temporary wheel house [ I hope to replace it after making an emergency tiller to add to the detail. In fact I have an idea to make the steering gear and having the box open but that needs more learned skills and perhaps not a sailing model. lots more to do before decking

So I leave the ship yard to do a quick run to the grocery store for the Admiral.... forgot to put him in his mansion.... and here's what I find upon my return.
