Omega1234 got a reaction from Wintergreen in Great Republic 1853 by rwiederrich - FINISHED - four masted extreme clipper
Hi Rob
THREE MONTHS???????? Oh my Lord.
It takes me three months to decide when I'm gonna start a boat....
I'm feeling totally inadequate now!
Cheers

Hi Rob
Beautiful work and I love the look of the hull and masts in the overall shots. A true little ripper!

She's parked on Beckholmen over the winter, if you are downtown someday (I used to stroll there, lots of old vessels to look on). Don't live in Stockholm anymore, so can't go and help out

Thanks Mike, but don't make an extra trip just to take the picture. I have a lot of work before I get that far but it will be nice to have the information in hand to think about how to make the parts.

I'll just slip quietly into the back, as unlike many other readers I know nothing helpful, just that this looks like a beautiful and interesting design and I'd like to learn from the build.

Bob: got it, will photo.
However, seems like we need to wait a bit. Here is the official schedule of SS Mariefred for 2017:
So the first time it would be available to public is on 27th May. So before that it is probably in some dock somewhere.
I checked the facebook group, no clear info there. But there are some interesting photos and videos! https://sv-se.facebook.com/steamshipmariefred/
While waiting - please check if there are some other areas that you want to check. Especially if there is something that you need that could be only observed onboard - in this case I will need to pay the entrance fee, which is ok, but then I better be a good spy and make all the photos you need!

Hi Bob,
nice find for detail !....
I also still need to install these "eyebrows" on my Bohuslän (spoilers to prevent rain- and splashwater rinsing over the window panes)

Hi Mike,
Sorry, you are right, there are many windows. In this picture, it is the lower square windows. Above the windows there is a curved work of some kind with a design inside of it. This is the best picture I have been able to find.

Hi Walter
I wouldn't worry too much. You've had too much on your plate, lately.
Just the fact that you're able to even think about your CAD drawings is a good sign.
All the best!
Cheers

Omega1234 reacted to popeye the sailor in Thermopylae by popeye the sailor - Sergal - 1:124 scale
thank you Steve, Patrick and Sam .......and those who hit the like button. the decals that make up the stripe....I made them a while ago. I was going through my bag of decals...I threw out some of them...extras from the Andrea Gail, the Susan A, and a few others.........I'll never use them again. the stripes are part of a bunch of images that I cot from a HO train site, copying images of decal sheets. I blow them up to size ans set them up in the decal maker. the same can be made in photo shop, if you have it
I cemented the fore deck in place.......thinking of how to make the mahogany border. the curved piece will be tough gotta get that planked. more to come, but first.....to get through the pesky work week. more soon!
thanks again all for look'in in!

Hi Bob,
What part exactly? There are many windows on that ship To avoid confusion, it would be nice if you can highlight the relevant part using some other photo.
Is it something on a side or a front of the ship? It is typically moored diagonally, so can't make a photo of the rear part without paying for the entrance ticket.
It is moored in the morning next to the city hall, so should be easy to photo!

Omega1234 reacted to BANYAN in USS Constitution by SawdustDave - FINISHED - 1:60th Scale
Sounds plausible Dave; unless the original design led to a 'wet ship' and they needed more protection to stop the 'roughers' coming over?
cheers

Hey guys, so its been almost 3 years since the last post but many things happened that made me put aside this project and in general the ships, but i learnt new stuff that im sure it will be really helpful, i opened my own studio where i sculpt and paint so i think it will be really helpful however i've forgotten lots of stuff, but well lets get to the point!
! have found a better way to make all of the blueprints! remember the sculptor clay? well it wasnt working at all, it used to get soft really quickly and since this kit is really tough to put in with all of the parts matching, i found a better way, i assembled the hull with the decks and then i drilled a whole in one of the decks in a place that later will be covered, once i did this i started sealing all of the gaps around the ship and i started melting some home made chavant clay, this clay can be as liquid as water when its warmed up but if you let it cool it gets really really hard even on room temperature, and after lots of work putting apart the ship once again i got the inner mold of the ship!! with this im planning on making the blue prints of the keel and the ribs!
Im really sorry for not taking pictures of the process but here is the picture of the demolded ship! (all the gaps will be filled) by the way do you recommend me using balsa wood strips for the planking? i would like to make my ships for RC even when i dont know much about the mechanism, thanks guys!

Omega1234 reacted to Walter Biles in America by Walter Biles - scale 1:48 - RADIO - POF schooner from BlueJacket Shipcrafters plans
I tried to open my latest CAD files for America. I can't figure out what I was trying to accomplish. I need to get a printout of the latest Section drawings so I can begin to work again. DUH! Only problem is I stopped with something half done, and after months away, I can't figure out if any of the drawings are good or not. I am going to review my log, and try to pick up my memories of what I was doing at that time. How can I get so lost from what I was trying to do?

Thought I'd try a reduced nail pattern test for the copper.
There is still a tighter small nail line along one continuous edge and perpendicular for the end of the plate. I only used two rows for the field. Instead of burnishing the strip between my fingers I used a small dental tool to smooth the pattern.
The darker spots are where the spray on dull coat was rubbed off a bit.
I've not used a ponce wheel for this effect previously so I'm still experimenting.
Rob, thanks for the pics of the copper plates. I believe they are from the '27 (?) rework so I'm not certain if the pattern is considered accurate to the 1812 era. If anyone knows for certain please hop in.
?????????
It continues............

I haven't done any of this, so use grain of salt, please.
Harder surface under copper when pouncing so less pronounced dimple.
Work from front, so it's an actual dimple, not a bump when applied to hull.
Burnishing with a tool shaped like the back of a spoon might give you the smoother look you are after.
I suspect a pinkish color because of the constant abrasion of traveling through the water, but dull, not shiny. Your pic of the copper after a dull coat is getting close.
When you get to that point, consider veneer stock for the ends. I finished a couple of sectional display mounts for ship's guns that way.
