These models are so nice, I cannot find the proper phrase in English.
Do I remember correct that you intended to weather your own model? Have you been salt chipping in secret?

Lots of work done on the Pelikaan. Frontmast, deckhatches, blocks and pulleys painted. Wooden deck, and a lot of other smaller jobs done.

And a beginning on the rigging. A very big job to do but also to find out how it has to be done

    Good evening everyone.
Work continues with a more complex piece, namely the main mast. I used copper wire and brass sheet. Still not ready have worked a lot of parts on the mast. .inc I built a small piece namely engine telegraphs.
    I wish you a pleasant evening .

Nils...I have used my vacuum former to make boats before and they work out wonderful........and easily repeatable.  Thin and easily able to fix all the interior framing.

I have also made a master plug and formed a silicone mold of  it, then cast many boats from that.......

All I can say is....... do what works best for you....that practice.... has already produced fantastic results for you.

    Hi Dan,
no. I have`nt considered vacuum forming yet, but many thanks for your very inspiring museum examples. I made the boats for my "Gorch Fock" from a wooden plug, (one for outside , one for inside) by creating a negative mould in plaster of Paris, and then processing them with cast polyester resin. That worked quick and easy, but these intended boats will be a bit more challenging I think, so learn by doing is the theme....

Got it.  Now it makes sense.

For the boats, have you considered doing vacuum formed hulls?  That is how the boats were done on the USS Maine in the Brooklyn Navy Yard museum.

The learning curve is about the same as for RTV casting, and there are small units available commercially so you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

I must admit Dan, it looks a bit strange...
the bottom side has a thin wooden mahagony reinforcement rail from the visual outer side, and that is masked off for painting duration. The U-channel is only at the top side.

    Nils -

You are getting very good with those railings.  Nice work.

I understand adding "U" channel top and bottom, but what is happening in the 3rd photo, the one on the scorched building board?

    small update :

made the lower bridge-deck railings, these guide the first class passengers alongside the structures of funnels 1 + 2  to the staircase that goes down to the promenade deck, so no one gets lost on the boats-level. There are no railing to the sea-side of the boats.
The etched copper railing is too "flimsy" on its own, so I spent a reinforcement rail at the bottom side and the obligatory brass handrail to strengthen the upper side.

    Thanks Captain P......

Patrick...I had plenty of time on my hands at the time.......I also built my custom/scratch built Glory of the Seas in just as many days...however, I was side tracked by building the custom Portuguese Fierra (AKA Cutty Sark) that I have not yet finished her.

Trouble is...I was side tracked on the Fierra with a new build the custom clipper ship, Donald McKay.  Before I even finished the main mast on the McKay, I drank the cool-aid and began my new build the Great Republic and the Fierra  and the Donald McKay are not completed either.   What a joke.  Now I have little time to finish any of them.  I should probably go back and begin finishing the Glory.

See what you did   Patrick...now I'm all guilty and stuff.......

    THREE MONTHS????????  Oh my Lord.

    I'm feeling totally inadequate now!

Thanks Patrick...I really appreciate that.  I feel I spend more time in research then on the build itself.  I was prefabricating parts for the spider rings that hold belaying pins around the mast feet.
It's funny how it all comes together in a convincing manner, when it feels sometimes that I'm rushing...comparatively speaking.  Actually I like working fast......My 1/96 hybrid build of the Cutty Sark on her repair ways(getting a new rudder)...took me 3 months to build.   So in retrospect...this is one of the longest builds I've engaged in.

    3 months to build this....

Looks like she is in need of some serious TLC, a little clean up and repair. can you post some more pictures showing the hull? Unfortunately pewter stretches under its own weight, you will need to cut the decking away a section at a time and add bracing when replacing the decking with wood. Not knowing the alloy will be a challenge and using a hot knife may be the best alternative to cut away the sagging deck. Cut close to the hull joints without damaging the hull and then sand up to the hull with a small course drum sander. This can be a great fun project to restore. Too bad we do not live closer together.

Hi Ross, Now that you have the model it would be good to get hold of the drawings of the ship, also as many photographs of her as possible to help with the details that you need to restore.
This site looks to have some nice photographs as well
