The best laid plans of mice and men... an Admiralty meeting.  We discussed progress and plans then "if I can't see it, why do it?  You'll save a couple of months, right?".   "Err.. yes.  But I want to do it because it's there.  I'll know it."  Well, so much for argument.  It's her ship and I'll do it.

Lol, boy are we cut from the same cloth! She's right, they usually are . Beautiful work Mark!

Question; How tight does the framework sit in that jig and at what point do you to remove it?

    Dave,
My wife and I send prayers of recovery and healing. Even with your home safe, there is a wounding that comes with surviving. The lose of a friend and the injury to your community are your lose as well. Sometimes people think all is well for those who's homes still stand. But your community is your home. God bless you and yours.

    Great information everyone!

Mark, I will look for those CD's. I think the work of the Russian masters is the bar I want to set for my own builds..of course over time

Ulises and Dan, Those techniques definitely have application!

Scott, I'll have to take a look at Chris Lindons, Freisland.

Dirk, Thank you for the link. That is what I was looking for. That link has a great discussion about the use of Bitumen which builds that feature natural wood finishes.

I can't say "never" but my goal for my own work is to avoid paint and celebrate the beauty of different exotic woods. This is partly the reason I'm staying with larger scale builds, 1:48th and above. This opens up the use of species that would be otherwise too coarse grained at a smaller scale. Not to mention, can stand up to a firmer hand rubbed finish.

    Yes Mark,
The Russian models is where I have seen it. I love the richness of the wood finish on some of those models and would love to reproduce it for mine.

Yes, making it look like it was built 200 years ago. I'm sure I could figure it out but no since in recreating the wheel so to speak

    Thanks Bill in Idaho

That does make sense John and is probably the direction I need to go. As Bill said, you don't want to beat 'em silly with a hammer. Just a few taps with a jewelers hammer.

Check out Ken Forans book on building in brass. Everything you need to know about brass. Schiffer books. No financial connection just a good book.  Bill

Hey John - you mentioned scoring the pieces at the bend. What do you use for that?

Mark - I'm working on some metal work for the mast. Took your advice and heated up the strips first. WOW! What a difference. The strip is amazingly pliable now.

    Joel, Mark, et al,

Scroll down in this forum and you will see a thread called re-hardening brass. The basic answer is: one can't.

I'm having a bit of a hard time imagining when you would need to do it. Under almost all circumstances where I'm worried about strength, I'm sure to silver solder my bands, eye-bolts, or whatever. There's a small learning curve but I now find it easier than soft soldering.

    Best,
    John

No.  It's a long and complicated process.  You can even quench the hot metal and it will stay soft and workable.  Google it if you like.

Sounds like just the ticket John.  Beautiful metalwork!  Thanks for sharing.

The other thing that has caught my eye is something they call a forming bezel. They come in various shapes - round, square, triangle.

I've found both the pliers and the bezels on Amazon.

    Mike,

I strongly suggest you invest in a pair of quality parallel grip pliers with straight (not tapered) sides. For the brass work below, I annealed the brass as Mark suggested, scored the strip where I wanted the bend, inserted into the plier at 90* to the side, bent, and gave it a small tap with a hammer.

I seem to recall that you can find the pliers for about $20. I use them constantly when working with metal.

    Best,
    John

    Mike,
Anneal the brass first.  Heat to red hot and let cool.  It'll soften it and make it easier to bend.   As for forms.. check around places like Amazon for small anvils. For a cheaper method, check around Home Depot and Lowe's in the hardware department.  They sell steel stock that might be usable.

Thanks all the for the great info..knowing your options is most of the battle.

Chuck - nothing imminent, I need to invest in some software I think first

Mark - never heard of Makerspace so that is a great lead, I'll look into it.

Daves - I was thinking of the smaller detail stuff, very similar to what Chuck has posted in his new thread on carving, rather than the large scale frames which I could see would require something industrial to do effectively

I am willing cut small jobs when the time permits.   I would encourage folks to contact me for availability.  For example,  right now I am swamped and couldnt possibly take a small job for laser cutting and have one such custom job on my to-do list.  I just wont get to it til early next month at the soonest.  If time isnt a factor then please let me know what you need.

Provide me with either a Corel Draw file or a DXF file of the parts.  I can talk you about specifics and the need to always have to adjust the drawings after I get them.  They will always need to be adjusted for the kerf of the cut depending on what type of wood you choose.

If you want the stuff sooner,

You can contact National balsa.  They have an excellent laser cutting service and I used them all the time before getting my own equipment.  But they will only use the woods they have in stock.  Basswood, Maple, Cherry and lite ply.....amiong a few other things.

See here for the custom laser cutting services at National balsa

    http://www.nationalbalsa.com/laser_cutting_s/8.htm

You would probably have to double your $2000 estimate for getting a laser cutter of your own the needed software and accessories.
That is if you want to cut anything thicker than 1/8" basswood with accuracy and a decent cut.

I really want to be able to learn and leverage this technique to enhance my current kit build, but am not willing at present to invest in the area of $2000 that it seems it takes to buy a quality cutter.  Does anyone know if there are there any service providers who will provide use of their laser cutter if provided with appropriate wood and files for custom small, one off orders?

I feel this is something more people would do if the bar weren't quite so high from a price standpoint.

    Many thanks in advance.

I just can t stop looking at the last pictures, it s like all of a sudden the die cast ornaments that come with the kits make much more sense, i built the San Felipe many years ago, pity it was before the internet. The wood also looks great! Fantastic and very creative!
