Bill Hime got a reaction from texxn5 in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Mark,
What a lovely build. I've spent the better part of the night reading through your build. It's a beautiful thing to watch wood come to life and tools given purpose. Another log for me to learn from
Sincere Regards,
Bill

One thing I've noticed with all your painting applications is that you stress many layers of thin coat application. That is an echo of my fathers voice, a master of many traits .
In my heart, you are in good company.

I blacken lots of small items but just prefer to paint cannons. I'll be using MS Cannon Black acrylic to which I add a bit of dark blue to get what I like. It's applied in multiple very thin coats to maintain the detail.

At 700 HRS. into the build, it's time to finish off the cannon barrels. We'll be using 1/16" eyebolts with just a short length of the base left to insert into the gun:
The hole was drilled with a #76 pin drill at an angle so that the ring sits hard to the small knob. A very small dab of thin CA was applied prior to insertion. Here's the 32 gun cannon 'forest' ready for painting:
Now ready for painting.......see you in 2 weeks!!!

Fletch,
It's not a publicized limit that was imposed to stop spammers. They would sign up, pop a link into a signature and make a "hi.. great site" post and leave.
Anyway, if you'll have a look here: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/forum/47-questionsinstructions-on-how-to-use-and-post-to-this-forumsite-problems-or-suggestions/ you'll find some helpful posts on "how-to" around MSW. There's one here: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/760-how-to-add-a-build-log-link-to-your-signature/ for adding links to the signature.

Thanks Bill,
I will put a link in my build log. However, as of yesterday, I didn't meet the minimum number of posts that allows you to modify your signature. Quite honestly, I didn't know there was a minimum number until I attempted to change my signature yesterday. Should meet it today though. I think I was only one post away.

Bill Hime reacted to Vivian Galad in Oseberg by Vivian Galad - Amati - 1:50 - modified kit
Hey, Sam, that´s a part of it. The other is that work is taking too much time from me and I can´t get to the shipyard as I would like. But she´s growing, my Oseberg version.
Hey Bill, be welcome to my log, take some refreshments and feel free to point anything u want - at least regarding the build :P . Sometimes I think u guys put too much faith on me, lol!! But I´ll share everything I learn in my journey.
Carl, be welcome too. Glad u joined.
Gaetan, that´s a great build and made me think in hollowing at least a segment of my ship. Thank you for sharing the pictures.

Mark, let me "throw my nickel in the grass" (old fighter pilot expression) and add my appreciation for the work you are doing. I want to some day get to that level and I want to see excellent examples for my journey. And the other stuff; that's not so much. Your work is something I will follow closely, as the best of examples.
Just as a padawan follows a master to become a Jedi.
Thank you for showing us how to do it.

Thank you for all the comments and likes, everyone. Keeps me in focus and perspective.
Ken,
I consider myself a padawan also as I am looking to the masters for advice. This is my first full ship scratch build. Ok.. second attempt. But to steal Yoda's line: Do or Do Not, There is no Try. Well the first one I tried... this one, I'm doing. I just hope it's right. Perhaps one of our late masters should be quoted. When asked where his build was headed, Roma answered: "We shall see....".

Bill Hime got a reaction from Piet in Oseberg by Vivian Galad - Amati - 1:50 - modified kit
Hello Vivian,
Seems like I rarely get in on the beginning of a build. Jack P. did such a beautiful job on his Oseberg. I look forward to seeing how you treat this build. I love the "antiquing" application, something I want to pursue with all my future builds. Look forward to learning from you, even brought my own chair !
Sincere Regards,

Bill Hime reacted to fletch944t in Researching a Constitution Build
Great posts guys. Just to let everyone know, I started my build log today.
Within my build log, I'm going to try to use a single post to document differences between the Model Shipways kit (essentially the Constitution as she sits today) and the Constitution as she appeared in the 1812 Era.
By "as she appeared in the 1812 Era" my intent is to build her as she appeared under the command of Isaac Hull. As I learn of new differences, I will go back and edit that "differences" post so that they will all be captured on one location. I will also edit that post to correct any information that I later learn is incorrect or at least add more information.

I have the gunports properly silled and sized (is silled a word?). I've also hit her with another round of fairing and am almost comfortable with it but I'll hold off until the stern is built, checked, verified and approved as this was my Waterloo the last time. Or maybe the wrong side of Trafalgar? Hmm...
Anyway, I've started measuring, scratching my head, and sorting out how I'm going to do this and get it right. I'm thinking I'll have draw the transoms, make templates for starters.

Bill Hime reacted to Force9 in Researching a Constitution Build
I'm not sure that is strictly true... The stated purpose of this refit is to do a complete/extensive replacement of the under body planking and copper plating. Beyond that I don't think there is any "official" word... Certainly we'd all hope that some provision could be made to bring either the bow or stern into better alignment with her glory years. There may be nothing definitive, but following guidance from the Hull model would be a reasonable approach - at least much better than the current configuration that is widely acknowledged to be very wrong for her 1812 appearance!
They may change the gun port lids to the half "buckler" type that seems to have been researched and corroborated by Ms. Desy (the official historian of the ship).
We can only hope...
Regarding research and good sources... I have discussed some sources for my build in my log... I'll copy my entry here:
Bill did a good job of summarizing the various decisions and friction points in understanding how the great ship was configured during the war. Ultimately however, there comes a point where some of the available information will be contradictory and the modeler will need to make choices based on personal bias and comfort level.
Good to see other modelers taking on the 1812 version of Connie!

Bill Hime reacted to Mahuna in has anyone used yellowheart
I used Yellowheart as accenting on my Mayflower. Two accent planks on the side of the Poop and 3 moulding strips. The white moulding is holly.

Constitution is scheduled to enter the drydock in March 2015. The Navy is waiting to conclude the war of 1812 bicentennial celebrations with a commemoration of the victory over the HMS Cyane and HMS Levant of Feb. 20, 1815.
The ship will be open for visitors until she actually is moved into the drydock and then the Navy is hoping to have parts of the ship open during the drydock period depending on safety concerns.
Between now and March the ship will begin un-rigging and sending down her spars and masts. All the carronades have been removed from the spar deck already.
I am hoping to get and post a set of pics of the various stages of the refit.

I read an article last week on the Constitution entering dry dock. Apparently, she entered her refit period on October 20th but, according to the article, would be available for tours on a limited basis until the summer of 2015. That seems to be confirmed by Bill's post.
After next summer, Connie won't be back in the water until 2017 and won't be back at her normal berth until the summer of 2018. Kind of disappointing. I've visited before and toured the ship and the museum. But, my kids were very young and I didn't get to spend as much time there as I would have liked. After I decided to do the build, I thought it would be nice to schedule another visit but, to my disappointment, she had entered her refit period a few days before. I don't think there's anyway I can get up there for a tour before they discontinue them.
As a note of interest (possibly) the Constellation entered dry dock in Baltimore within a few days of Connie entering her refit period. Okay maybe someone will find it interesting.

I looked on the Constitution museum web site and all I was able to find was wooden pens made from Constitution wood.
I'd love to include some wood from one of the Constitution rebuilds but, have yet to be able to locate any.
Changing the subject, I was looking through the Laurence Arnot book on the Constitution that comes with the Bluejacket kit (ordered the Bluejacket plans with Arnot book years ago) and I was looking at the stern configuration shown in his book. I found it extremely odd that the 1812 stern configuration in his book shows six windows, and that the configuration is based in large part on study of the Corne paintings of the battle with the HMS Guerriere. Yet when you look at the Corne paintings, they appear to show five stern windows.
I know that this has been a huge point of contention amongst Constitution modelers over the years and I certainly don't want to dredge that topic up again. But, I just found it extremely odd that Arnot would show a configuration that is different from the resource he references.

Welcome to MSW Fletch. I've only been here since the middle of August, but I couldn't agree more with your comments about build logs. I'm pretty sure I've learned more from the build logs than everything else combined since I started this hobby just over a couple months ago.
I've also learned a great deal by posting my own log, where plenty of amazing people have given me excellent feedback, and also the simple act of taking the pictures, putting what I've done into words, and then looking at what I've done in the photo's (close ups are an unforgiving mistress) has been an awesome learning tool, so I absolutely recommend starting your own log whenever you get started.
