Karleop got a reaction from yvesvidal in Pride of Baltimore II by Karleop - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64
Hola:
Continuing with some details:
Modeling, painting and installing the Fairlead:
Later I made some tests to paint the Baltimore´s Emblem that are laid on the transom, but it's really difficult to work in detail on this scale. Therefore I got the idea to do it on the computer: copying the shield and reducing it to the appropriate scale. And after several tries I obtained an acceptable result. Here you can see the hand made try and the printed one attached on the wood form
Because Guaymas is a little city, it is quite impossible to obtain the appropriate dry transfer letters to make the ship´s names, so, following the same procedure I used my computer to do them:

Hola:
Following with the construction, I proceed to do the main rail according to the plans:
Now with the use of some blocks that were cut to the appropriate high I began installing the bulwark stanchions:
Here you can see that the hawse timbers were put in place, including the hawsing pipe , using for that purpose little pieces of aluminium tubing
Before to add the bulwark I decided to paint the stanchions:

Hola:
Now I follow doing the counter and part of the transom:
As you can see I made a base for the ship to work more comfortably
My first step to begin planking the deck was to paint one edge dark brown with a little wood caulk to simulate the caulking in the seams.
Finnaly the planking was finished

Following with the planking:
Here you can see that I added two drop strakes near the bow in order to maintain the plank wide to an acceptable size
And finally I sand all the ship´s hull

Hola amigos:
Little more than year and a half I finished model VASA (Billing Boats) and after spending time with my other hobby (oil painting, which I do during the temperate months) I started with the Pride of Baltimore II. It must be admitted that this delay is due in part to my wife always makes me the comment: And where are you going to put this new ship?
In principle, this model seems much simpler than the Vasa, especially because the Vasa came with practically no instructions at all and only a couple of blueprints while the POB seems to overdo indications and blueprints (6). However, like all the models that I have built so far, there are some missing or unclear indications and it is necessary to use your own judgment and imagination, a situation that makes it more interesting the construction of these kits.
Also it is important to mention the great help and tips obtained in Forums like MSW. For this particular case I follow with interest the topics of jcoby, Mark (Blue Pilot) and Andy (Andymech).
I begun the POB around a month ago and here can you find some advances:
At this point it is important to mention that is better to make a light beveled and give the finished when placing the planks

Hola:
Continuing with the POB construction:
In the first two pictures you can see the installation of the Planksheer, and as some of you mention, it seems to be a little shorter at the stern but I left it so to see what happen later.
Here yo can see that I exceed in the beveling of some Bulkheads and it must to be corrected
Next, I decided to paint the Planksheer because it seems more easy to do it know than later
Saludos!!

Hola:
Apparently nobody is watching my posts, probably because this is not a very popular ship whatever the reason. Anyway I will continue putting my advances on the Forum.
Here I show my next steps:
After painting I put the 3 wales below the planksheer and also begun planking the keel or lower portion, including the stealers as shown in the blueprints (Note the nib ends of these planks):
Below the wales I continue with the planking. By the way, the number of planks that are shown in the drawings are not the actual number according to the width of the planks provided (20 to 22 against 17).
It is to notice that for the bow I prefer to make a curve plank than trying to bent the plank

Thanks Chuck and everyone for all the likes! In the middle of another redo with the oarlocks. I had them installed but I rushed it a bit so naturally it has to be redone. Probably a week to correct this with the filling of holes, sanding, painting, etc.
Here's some photos of other progress: belay pins painted (photo of the paint used). Pleasantly surprised by the quality of this paint. Metal work for the rudder and such is shown along with the horse and windlass handles on the side for now while the caprail gets repainted and oarlocks installed.

Next in the instruction manual is the binnacle. This is very small - it's difficult to work with wood and glue at these sizes.
Instead of carving a hole, I just painted a black oval to simulate it. Also, the ribbing was made by taking a 1/32" square piece and cutting it in half twice to make 1/64" square rods, which were then stained, cut and glued around in two bands. Crazy.
Next up is the wheel box, which feels gigantic in comparison.
Andy.

Hi Mates,
Working on the mid-foremast installation - how I fashion the mast cap release pins;
====================
1) Using a small brass nail squeeze its head with standard size pliers.
2) Using a rotary tool smoothen (a bit) the now flattened head – top and bottom only
3) Drill a hole through the flattened head first measuring the drill bit so as to have it conform to the other nail that will serve as the vertical locking pin.
PS: the attrition rate tends to be high with this step –it’s hard to align the drill bit so that it remains centered and drills the hole where you want it to be on the flattened nail head (doing it without a drill press)
3) Then with a rotary tool flatten the sides to square off its look.
4) Now flatten the head of the other smaller nails
4) Blacken all the parts with Black Brass Metal Finish.
Over time I do not think that black hobby paint will
Stay adhered and may flake off (IMO) only.
5) I found that the tiny vertical lock pins tend to slide too low.
So I use a super small smudge of CA as I insert the pins
Holding the pin where I want it to remain.
6) Cut off the too long vertical pin ends
PS: Thanks mates for the help with the mast fid bits. I’m happy to have learned this detail. J
I think that it was Peter Jensen – I need to go back through to check your kind advice…

Looks awesome, Michael. With drilling the holes through the flattened head (Step 3 above), try putting a small piece of masking tape on the head first. It should stop the drill bit from slipping. You can even mark the centre-point on the tape.

Hola:
A new update. I made the crew berthing and galley access trunk.
The tricky part was the fire hydrant and hose because the Britannia part that comes with the kit makes it very difficult to add a hose. So I weld a couple of small brass nails simulating the hydrant.
To simulate the hose I used a thin electronic wire:

Hi everybody:
After finishing the lockers I decided to follow with the lifeboat:
The most tricky part was to sand the interior because the kit comes with the "bread and butter"laser-cut lifts. To accomplish this I glued only two of the lifts and before gluing another pair I carved and sanded the inner surface of the pairs. Nonetheless it is quite difficult to achieve a "perfect" soft interior.
Here you can see some pictures of the finished boat:
The cradles:
And the boat in it´s final position:
