  1. Nice job on the doors. I really like the framing, it gives it depth which really makes it appear more real. The hinges turned out even better this time, they appear better proportioned and the bolts appear more pronounced. They sure make that crappola piece the kit includes look BAD. My wife Tammy works in surgery and I had her look over your hand stiching. She said its normal to have to open that type of injury that much. Of course she went into what type of stitch it was and blah blah ....somewhere with all the OR lingo I was in the clouds... but she did say it should heal up fine. Anyway it looks like your healed well enough to be building back at speed. I really like the contrasting black strakes against the dark wood also, including the balconey rail. I wonder how it would look with darker spindles? I originally picked the SFII as my first build, I'm glad now it was back ordered, so I cancelled. I've been struggling along on a little Swift Pilot boat and am amazed at the progress you continue to make, even with all the blips from being a first build and crazy accidents. Personally I find overcoming the problems one of the most satisfying parts of building. This hobby force one to think outside of the box. can't wait to see the candle lite windows.
  2. Hello David She's a beauty. Not to be a pest but just to remind,... nudge, nudge, wink, wink, Mast hoops... I'd love a brief desciption of how you made those beauties. They make a huge difference in the rigging and I'd love to incorporate them in the Swift rather then the brass rings. Thanks for bringing back another classic log. Love that Bear!
  3. LMAO Augie, Ground Hog? not muskrat, or 'possum and I think starfish poutine would be awfully crunchy Dr starfish.... er Wayne, thanks. I love the extra info. I'd think snails would be easier to get at then clams. Sad to think they don't even know how butter and garlic enhances the snails flavor! All this food talk is making me hungry
  4. Oh, one other thing. On your decals, is that posted somewhere in MSW how you make those. Seems I remember you saying something about using a printer? but then my memories horrible. Anyway, any info or direction to the correct spot in the forums would be appreciated. The Decals really make a model POP. I dont know if it'll work out but I got a sizing pen and 6 little gold leaf sheets at hobby lobby. I dont know if I can freehand but I just gotta try to gold leaf a transom with the Ladies name. My plans are the Dinghy for my mom-in-law. simple 3 lettters DOT. I'll have to practice one before attempting it on the boat. I'm looking forward to the detailing of the Phylly C. Did I hear jet-ski...
  5. Id say Capt' Denny probably decided it was time for new buoys and replaced his dinhgy crusty old buoys and purchased new ones. (he probably sold them to some nautical collector on ebay for more then the cost of new ones). and with Capt' Dennys aging eyes he need bright new bouys to be better able to see them. With those new buoys, ZEN he could see them again (and made a profit ta' boot) At least that my story....
  6. By water line I wasn't thinking the stripe. I always assumed the buoys paint scheme was to identify whose was whose. I was meaning the part below the water is more worn. Like the paints cracking and peeling.
  7. Wow, the prawn on the table is great and I didnt know starfish got that small. GREAT additions to the pots and table. Awesome job weathering, just one thing and maybe its the camera. The Buoy should be more beat up and would they show a water line. In the pic's they POP like a new bobber. I'm seeing barnacle encrusted, algae hangin' on, salt water soaked and faded buoy's on a old work horse like that. Not trying to be a spoil sport, I intend this only as constructive achievement of "ZEN"
  8. Yea Pictures! So by bare poles, you dont mean just masts and standing rigging? I'm a assuming you mean yards, and minimal running rigging, just no sails. With some of the obstacle's you've encountered, maybe you mean just sticking dowels in and saying done Sarah's gonna be real happy with this info. I think she started that peterboro to let you forge the way. Nice research Waynedinand Magellan. I tend to agree with you. show off the rigging and detail, even though the sails for that 1:144th would be postage stamp sized. Personally I dont know how you work at this scale, it boggles my mind.
  9. Just looking at that Auction on ebay. Is the auction for choice or all 5 pieces. Its worded "This auction is for a Cocobolo rosewood fret/finger board blank." to me "a'' means one. It also has 5 available... That far left piece is my favorite. Amazing the graining colouration from side to side the first pic (top) has that orange/blonde streakyness which I'm not as fond of. and the "Get ye behind me crazy thoughts! :D" come on go crazy, we're all dying to see it.
  10. Oh yea, the wood. thanks for the link. I love that cocobolo that looks like your talking about, kinda like if ebony and mahogany got together and had offspring. That piece is beautiful, I was looking at a 1 1/2" sqaure by 3" piece of some red mallee burl that had heart and sap through the piece, man it was beautiful. http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=31861&rrt=1 Wood is something our world of plastics have forgotten. I purchased a sample pkg of veneer from Lee Valley, it gets here tomorrow and I feel like a kid on christmas eve. 20 sq ft of mixed grab bag 5.5" to 7.5" x 12" pieces, so like 40 pieces. Hope it has some birds eye and burl. I was looking at there hide glue. Do you have any experience with that? but then I'd need a veneer hammer.... Maybe if I sold a kidney I could get that Byrnes, but I'd need the tilt table and all those other options. I've actually been looking as Garwards saw built. http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/82-montanes-by-garward-occre/page-33 I love the direct drive it has. Oh to have access to a machine shop. Turning threads on metal has that same effect that the gosimer lace off a japanese plane does, it hypnotizes. @ Augie We love to go to current river in MO, its a beautiful area to camp, canoe and tube down the river. There's just something about moving water that draws me......
  11. I know what you mean Buck and Russ, but this is the crap I have to put up with. This is Rueben. He's our Vizla/bassett mix from the humane society, all 75 pounds of him. When he lays on your lap, You know it. He thinks the pool is his. Maggie our Terrier mix is a better lap size. Here's a pic of our paradise, the Hammock.
  12. Oh, I REALLY like your cocobolo wales. Thats a beautiful wood, Ive seen it used alot in knife handles. Do you have a source for it? I just love how different woods accent each other.
  13. Thanks Buck for not just the reply but the scale of color demo with your picture. MUCHLY APPRECIATED! I'm wanting to darken the canoe a bit but not much and the orange should help with that. I'm assuming it will be between the Garnet and Blonde. and yes spray laquer would be easier, but I'm more interested in learning new things. We need a Salty Sea Dog Finishing 101 thread in the Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques forum. I was thinking about your comment about using everclear and I think its a drying time issue maybe. Methanol which is usually used to denature is much more volatile then ethanol and the faster drying would give less time for evening of the shellac, but thats a hypothesis. I've seen other chemists dip their hand in methanol and light it on fire, the methanol is so volatile that it burns inches away from their hand, it vaporizes faster then it can ignite. I know in my past automotive days some over-thinned/reduced the spray for a faster dry, especially with enamels in cooler temps. Of course all that isn't not as much an issue with PPG's advent of catalyzed finishes. I use everclear alot for tinctures, so I always have a bottle on hand. Passion Flower tincture makes a great muscle relaxer.
  14. just an FYI, Lee Valley also has the pumice http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?cat=1,190,43040,20059&p=20059 Its a different brand then what you used though. Does brand matter? Lee Valley has free shipping until 3-25 also (tomorrow) From your experience (if you've used the orange shellac, I noticed you used blonde) how much colour does it (the Orange) impart? You also mentioned lemon oil, I'm use to using tung oil and was wondering how the 2 compare as far as colouring. Garward used 4 combos in a test before finishing his Montanes. see: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/82-montanes-by-garward-occre/page-21 and more angles on http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/82-montanes-by-garward-occre/page-22 The 4 he trialed were: 1. Karnauben wax, drying, some layers of orange shellac. 2. Some layers of orange shellac on a clear wood. 3. Some layers of lemon shellac on a clear wood. 4. Linseed oil, drying, some layers of orange shellac Thanks for any help.
  15. I'm with you on the french polish, that salty sea dog buck has me re-shopping for shellac now (I had planned a sprayed laquer), which I nearly bought with my lee valley order that arrives tomorrow, ARGH! Oh Well, one always need an excuse Orange flakes http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?cat=1,190,42942&p=20030 and the pumice http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?cat=1,190,43040,20059&p=20059 Lee Valley also has free shipping until tomorrow. I was also considering these scrapers, wondering how they'd work on shaping the hull. Less messy then sanding. http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?cat=1,310,41069&p=32639
  16. I'd tack it but shim it so its flat from curve to curve (check it with a straight edge). I discovered after rounding the curve planking that the planking held it where it was. At that point it was have a convex or concave bottom, so I gave it a raised keel as it would have really looked bad otherwise. Even with the slight bow once the false keel was glued it's really not all that noticable. ...and I figured it'd help the canoe cut thru the H2O. I mainly tacked it to hold it centered while planking, you could tack it for the first few planks but your already to that point looks like... so Id probably just let it be free. I was thinking small binder clips yesterday with a steel rod welded on its back. Hum now I have to think some more.... I haven't had the buzz box out lately.... ...tmc casually gazes into space, again.....
  17. Oh one other thing, Its hard to see but is your keel raised off of the center former? It looks like it might a bit. If it is, dont make the mistake I did a tack it down, unless you shim it. Tacking it down caused the keel to be to long (because a bow formed) and I didn't realize this until I'd passed the curvature of the ends of the keel. This ended up giving the Pereaboro a raised keel rather then a flat bottom. Other then that, that was the only problem I remember and had it not been my first build, Ive have known not to make that desicion.
  18. Yahoo another Peterboro! TEAK? and Mahogany! holy swizzle sticks Batman this canoe is gonna rock. I've actually considered buying the wood to build a striped canoe. Once you have the formers and blueprints all you need is the wood. Cant wait to see this one go together, but honestly going from 1:144 to 1:12 will ruin you and having to go back to Harriet is gonna be hard. You'll think you've gone blind One other thing. on your planking clamps, Ive been debating on buying a set of those but wasnt impressed with the reviews Ive read. Nothing better then the opinion of someone you know and trust. are they worth the inventment, I'm having a heck of a time getting the planks to lie flat to the bulkhead and rubberbands and wood block just isnt getting it. Poor clamping is forcing me to you CA and I don't like that. Your word and I'm ordering these.
  19. hey Buck Nice french polish, I've been planning a sprayed laquer finish for my peterboro canoe and had considered going old school but had no experience with the shellac flakes. Now you've got me thinking. http://www.leevalley.com/US/Wood/page.aspx?p=20030&cat=1,190,42942 I'm assuming this is an OK version as my research on shellacs shows that it comes in many variations of colours. (Any Colour you like, PF ref). This is a orange variety and Lee Valley has free shipping until tomorrow. Do you have a better source? I love trying new things and I want a really glossy finish on the peterboro. This doesn't state if its dewaxed but I'm assuming it is? What do you think?
  20. Maybe not far away, but definitely in the boonies. Most anything south of I-64 is. I'm actually in a small town 15 miles from Carbondale. Since C'dale has SIU the internet routed me through there for faster DSL. C'dales only about 14-17k population and it's the largest town in miles, although marion is growing. It's beautiful country down here though. Right where the Ice Age stopped, so we have lots of push up and very interesting terrain. Being a navy brat I lived all up and down the east coast (VA, CT, SC, MS) and I like Southern IL. Mississippi was a great place to be a kid though. So who's gonna swing the bottle, The Queen? So is this the HMS Swift? So whats Nona's sisters name? chihuahua's are funny dogs. A friend has one and Rueben our 80 lb basset mix dwarfs poncho, but Poncho doesnt get size. He thinks he's the biggest dog in the room. You should post a picture of your quartet.
  21. Ive noticed recently at times the reply editor on MSW has been acting abit squirrelly. For instance all options (smiley's, font....) are greyed out and not functioning. Although it seems to be working again You all are lucky to have a local modeling club, thats what I get for living in the middle of no where. Congrats Jarero, where's the champagne for the christening? I really love the completementary wood in this kit and how it all works together beautifully. Oh does the new kit come with the sails? the older one didnt and I'm wondering what type of clothe to use, I saw someone state pillow cases worked well and was thin enough. Plus I've already scheduled sewing machine time with mom. Wonderful build, thanks for sharing.
  22. Oh and as far as the Queen, I think it looks more like tired then disappoval. Either that or indifference, but then Queens are often that way.
  23. just curious, did any of the mounting hardware come with the newer kit, like the name plate or did you have that made. Also its kind of hard to take too many pictures of the Swift rigging as there is so little, That's one of the reasons I picked her for my 1st (no ratlines) Great Job, cant wait to see her finished. Thanks for the photos, MSW logs have replaced AL's instructions, although the blueprints are helpful at times.
