  1. Greeting Jerry It's coming along fine and sounds like you are really enjoying it.. I am starting to enjoy this build now, but must confess when I first started I could not get into the build and got a bit cheesed of with it. I have just finished planking the bulwarks which you are referring to on your ship and I did a bit of cheating. I was expected to plank them with vertical strip all around ( about I would guess at least a hundred) the ship. Mine are horizontal, and they get painted red so know one will know. I very rarely use the drawings, it's usually a cursory glance at them , then a look through the build logs to see which is the best way to go. Far better than the plans as you well know. I just found out Lawrence had another build on the go, so popped in to have a look, and there was no chairs left !!!!!!! But he is going to rustle me one up, anyway keep enjoying your build and it's looking very good. Regards .... DAVID
  2. Greetings Glenn Well there we go, the stern facia out of the way , and it look ok to me. Good luck with the galleries. As for repairs later we all suffer, here is my pointy end and it's only a blunt end ( well it was ) at the minute !!!!. Enjoy MOD. Regards DAVID
  3. Greetings Jerry Yep really buzzing along, and excellent progress. Nice caulking and with a four butt shift. It's coming on fine. Well done. DAVID
  4. Greetings Jerry Hope all is well. This build has really moved on, as it was only started in mid December . Well it's really coming on well and the hull looks really good. I don't know about staining but I like the way it looks now, I am with Glenn and if I was happy about the finish of the hull after the final sanding I would not stain it, only a coat of varnish, but it's your ship. Anyway keep enjoying it DAVID.
  5. Greetings Glenn Well done. It's coming on fine. And the galleries next, with a really enjoyable phase to follow them. Loads of work to do on the hull, which should keep you very busy for quite a while. Take your time. DAVID. NO MOD TONIGHT.
  6. Greetings Jerry Well you are once again buzzing along, and it's looking good. I have got to agree the small size of the ship does make it awkward at times, and I have just finished planking the deck at the stern of the ship, and had the ship on my knee at times, as I did when planking the hull. Yep the victory was much easier to work on because of it very large size, and most of the time it was in the cradle. The downside of of this was having to stand a lot in various aspects of the build, which was no good for my back. I have had my first disaster during the build, but I am an expert at the repair work in the area involved. I dropped the ship onto the pointy end, which is a blunt end at the minute and broke it. It's the area were the figurehead fits. You must agree I was very lucky that's were it landed!!!! Keep enjoying your planking. DAVID
  7. Greetings Jerry It looks really good. Looks like a cracking surface for the second planking, and as Brian says take your time. OK head down and away you go, a week should do it. Keep all the walnut sawdust for any filler you may need , not that I expect any to be needed. Just enjoy it . DAVID
  8. Greetings Jerry Wow!!!!!! It's got a humpy back!!!! and It looks really good. DAVID
  9. Hello Paul Yep Paul the rigging around those blocks does get a bit complexed , but you are doing fine , and I am sure you will soon have it sorted. Don't fit the bowsprit on the ship until you need to, put it to one side. The builds looking good. Keep enjoying it DAVID
  10. Greetings Jerry Well there we go , that's the first planking done, and after a good sanding, a nice second planking still leaves you the option of a wood finish. Anyway enjoy your take your time second planking. DAVID
  11. Greetings Jerry Hope all is well. Talking about the second planking at the stern not being mentioned, do you get any reference to reducing the width of the keel to match the width of the rudder??? I think you know what I mean. If you are double planking and using say 1mm strip, the width of the keel becomes 4mm wider than the keel width once the planking is completed. What width is the rudder ?? As you well know the rudder will be the same width as the keel, so work of some sort must be done. I think there is a bit of a chance you will know what I mean. Merry Xmas. DAVID
  12. Greeting Lawrence Thanks a lot for your advice. I hope you had a cracking Xmas. I have spent little time on the site over Xmas, as I was away from home and only used my phone to check what was going on. I have already finished the second planking so need to work with this. I am off to see my friend later today to see what coloured varnish he has to hand, but it will need to be Matt. So I will see how things go later, but I do not want to paint the hull white if that is possible. Have you made a decision on your case yet ?? Best wishes DAVID
  13. Greetings max Excellent work throughout your build, all crisp and clean , and your rigging is exceptional . Well done. Just keep enjoying it. DAVID
  14. Greetings all. Well I have not done any work at all over the Xmas period, but resumed my build today intending to complete the sanding of the hull, after which I shall complete the planking of the keel. My intention when I started this build was to only clear varnish the hull, but when you look at the sanded hull it looks like that will not be an option. I knew the strips I was supplied with the kit were very poor to say the least, but did not realize how crappy they would look after the final sanding, as you can see the big difference from the beginning of the second planking on one photo, and the later ones after sanding. The hull looks awfull and is in fact a very smooth finish, with very few areas to tidy up. And the clear varnish idea is out of the window. So unless you chaps can offer any advice it looks like it's going to be a white painted hull, or would you use a coloured varnish. Thanks a lot in advance. DAVID
  15. Greetings Jerry Well done so far. Yep this planking is a take your time job, but will be no prob for you. I have got to say I don't go much on your multi coloured cannons, they are well out of line and have been fitted far to early, yep room for improvement there. Keep enjoying your build Jerry . DAVID
  16. Greetings Jerry Well done, at last it's arrived. Are you going to add any lighting at all, or playing safe and leaving well alone. One thing you will find it hard to be able to do is take decent photos because of reflection. I gave up trying. Do you think you will be fitting a display case over your Half Moon before next Xmas ???? Once again well done on the completion of your HMS Victory.. DAVID
  17. Greetings Jerry Well that is very impressive !! The curve around the bows is really good. Keep it going you are doing a fine job. I will finish my second planking in a couple of hours time, but then the thin planking of the keel. The pva holds things up a lot. Take care, catch you later DAVID
  18. Hello Glenn Really moving on now, plenty of work around the poop deck area to do. I would have a look at the buckets. After I made a pigs ear on mine I thought it might be an idea to fit the buckets onto a strip and then fit the loaded strip in position, instead of fitting the hooks and hanging the buckets individually, if you follow. It's a crap job. Well done so far. Less haste DAVID
  19. Hello Jerry I see what you have done, and the curve for the planking gets even tighter !!!!! How thick are the planking strips ??? DAVID
  20. Greetings Jerry , Well you a certainly buzzing along and it's looking good, but have a bit of sorting out to do on the keel with the build up of thickness of the planks. I had an idea that was going to happen on my ship. Luckily I had the option of leaving off the first planking in that area, and I will use 0.5mm for the second planking on the keel, and plank the rudder also with 0.5mm which solves things. I was also warned by Nigel about the thickness build up. I am sure you will have no prob getting yours sorted, and it looks like you are going to have a few friends at hand. Keep enjoying it Jerry
  21. Greetings Jerry Well aren't you a lucky chap?? Throw the plans away, you don't need them. A build by both max and Alex for you to emulate. A daunting task !!!!!! real cracking ships, but you are very lucky to have lots of info. As I said earlier the hull needs to be really neat as all is visible wood, so is a take your time job. To be honest it is a bit of a challenge being small as everything needs to be very tidy if you follow. Did you notice I didn't even notice the caroline hull was painted white. All my concentration was on logs with a wood finish. Which I am obviously trying to achieve. Anyway good luck with your build, I reckon we are going to both enjoy them. Take care Jerry DAVID
  22. Greetings Thanks a lot. Glen and Chris. It is white !!!! It's white on the box and my first photo!!!. I have been only looking at all the build logs which all show a wood finish, and did not realize it was white. I wondered what Nigel meant by panarts own colours, now I know!!. I realized the pintles were made only to suit the width of the ply keel, so thought about only using 0.5 mm strip on that area and the rudder, and insetting the pintles if necessary. Well at least I had an idea what I was doing. However I do want to retain the wood finish. So I do need a bit of advice on what to use on the planking to enhance the finish. It must be an age thing!!!! DAVID
  23. Greetings all Well the second planking will soon be finished , and it is ok, so the smoothing of the hull should be no problem, but the poor quality planking strips will do the look of the hull no favour at all. What I need to know is should I treat the hull on its completion and if so what should I use. Thanks in advance. DAVID
  24. Greetings Jerry Well you haven't messed about starting your next build, and I shall follow your build with interest until it's completion, as you would expect. Good luck Jerry, just take your time and enjoy it. Take care. DAVID
