Got the wales on and did the deck beams. i also gave the hull a coat of sanding sealer "concocked" from thinned out Min wax polyurethane and West system 410 Microlight fairing filler. The last item was formulated for fairing stitch & glue boats. It seemed to work for models but needed a lot of stirring before applied to models. It was a guess & by god mix , much like Julia Child's recipes. Next will laying the main deck planking.

Thanks, M Taylor for the advise for a trail cutting. Shown in the image is a cutting of a gun port on a scrap bulkhead. I did use the carbide burr chucked in a Dremel for the initial start then carefully moved to the prescribed cut as related before. I finished up with a 3 cornered file and emery board.
I decided not to cut the ports now but rather later as the hull needs much handling to glue the whale, channels, moldings bow to stern and rail caps. Along with the gun ports and freeing ports in the whole main deck I feel the bulwarks P&S will be rather weak.

Installment 11.
Some discussion about the ship’s bell. Amateur Jan thought they definitely had one and hung in the helm’s man location.
Tried my hand at it on my DB-200 Unimat but it was way too large. I made a second one and it seemed right. I managed to install a hook in helm’s man quarters and in trying to hang the bell it dropped down through the helm opening into the bilges below. I made a second one and after closing the holes it mounted without a hitch. A US dime is 7 ½ mm in diameter.
The ship's bell hanging in its place. It even has a clapper.
Started to install the side galleries. The windows for the captain and officer/passenger compartments are here cut out.

Painted the clinker planking, installed the main and mizzenmast chain plates.
Port side view looking forward with the chain plates installed. I had to replace the mizzenmast with a slightly taller one so the shrouds would miss the poop deck railing.

Remade mainmast knightheads, installed woolings on foremast, installed railing on poopdeck. Remade and installed knightheads for foremast.

remove and use the railing cap instead. This is done a little later on.
Belaying pin rails on the quarter and poop decks. Here too Amateur Jan suggested to reduce them in length, which was done a little later on.

The Providence plan calls for a wale P&S showing 2' wide the full length of the hull. To determine it's shape I pinned on a "fairing batten' "1/16" X 1/16" " in the designated area. A tweek here and there was needed to get it to look "fair". As much as a 32 of an inch made a difference in achieving a "fair" look . Once satisfied I traced this curve on to the hull using a lead pencil. Now using tracing paper on the penciled line I captured this S curve on a piece of tracing paper which was used to transfer once more on to artists WC paper. This is in the fore ground of the image. I made it ½" wide as shown and placed it on the hull to get the stern and bow cuts.
I figured if I cut this shape on a suitable piece of bass wood it would be near impossible (for me)to connect it to the hull using clamps, pins whatever. So , why not in several narrow strakes reasoning that in full size it would also impossible etc. So I borrowed stock intended for the deck which came prescribed to simulate the calking. This worked out OK for me and in the image are three of the 4 strakes to obtain the wale shape on the hull. I'm still figuring if I should apply a filler or just let the black paint do it's thing.
I still haven't applied any sanding sealer to the hull.

I find myself and some work on my present build. taking the hull on my lap or between my legs to hold the hull in place during some application. Any body else do the same ? Or shouldI see my shrink ?
BTW I do have various vises.

Part 4 – Gratings
Next up was making gratings. To be accurate, the gratings needed to be small enough where the holes were no bigger than 1/32” square (this equates to about 3” square in actual size).
I made up the typical ‘sled’ for the circular saw
I then milled a small billet of boxwood to about 1/8 thick. I ran this through the jig to create the ‘teeth’ needed for interlocking the planks, but when I tried to cut it to individual pieces 1/32 thick the ‘teeth’ were destroyed by the cutting.
I did some research and found an approach that worked for me:
I milled individual planks 1/8 wide and 1/32 thick.
Using Ambroid glue, I glued these planks in a stack and compressed them in my vise for a few hours.
This made a ‘billet’, which I then ran through the the thickness sander to bring it to the required thickness, then through the saw using the ‘sled’. When all of the ‘teeth’ were cut I put the billet in a bath of acetone, which dissolved the Ambroid glue and produced individual planks ready for the grating.
This solution was simple – to this point. I then needed to learn some new lessons before I could make acceptable gratings:
1. The individual planks need to keep the same alignment in the grating as they were when cut, otherwise the teeth will be slightly staggered and won’t line up properly. This will cause some broken teeth and will spoil the grating. In order to be sure of this, I started coloring one edge of the billet before sawing, so that after the planks are separated out they can still be properly stacked.
2. I found that I was sometimes not taking care that the billet was making full contact with the floor of the sled at every cut. This cause shallow cuts that caused inconsistent ‘teeth’ in the plank. This caused alignment problems when assembling the gratings.
After much trial and error I was able to produce acceptable gratings and proceed with the build. This learning process took several weeks and consumed some pricey castello boxwood, but was a valuable experience.
This is the frame for the main hatch.
The final result looked pretty good to me.
Much later I needed to make small gratings for the beakhead, and decided to use a somewhat different approach: I made a grating jig by running a billet through the sled. I cut the grating planks so that the teeth were a consistent 1/16’ long, then lined up the planks in the jig – tooth side up. I then was able to slide some small (1/16 x 1/32) battens into the grating to complete it. This approach was much simpler than my prior approach (matching the teeth of individual planks), and produced better results.
Lots of lessons learned!
