End of Hull Construction - For Now
The boomkins, seats of ease, and hammock cranes are all complete. Here are a few photos.
Boomkins and 2 seats of ease for 140 sailors.
The manual says to skip the aft hammock cranes for now because they will interfere with rigging the shrouds. The manual never gets back to them, and most other builders omitted them as well. I won't be rigging shrouds so I built them.

I just wanted to post a couple of proof of life pictures. I planed the spars to a tappered hex then sanded them round. It was really easy and I'll do it that way from now on. It was my first time using a plane. I still need to learn how to sharpen the blade. The cabins are just placed on and not glued. My next challenge is the metal work. It's another thing I've never done before. I have soldered PE and other small parts but I've never really made parts. I'm looking forward to trying it.

The general is aboard for a final inspection, and declares this build log finished to his satisfaction. (I think he just came from a ball or some other occasion)
Thank you for your likes and comments.
The shipyard is cleaned up and awaiting next year's project.
Happy Holidays to all.

Erik, she looks fantastic. I'm really looking forward to watching her go vertical. I'm a little apprehensive about doing the masts and rigging on my Glad Tidings. I'll watch your masting and rigging with great interest.

Hey all!
Happy holidays and new year!
I added the molding strips to one side of the hull and wanted to share some pics.
I tried my best with it. I did stain them first before gluing them on. Now into the other side to repeat the entire process!
Thanks all for reading!

Your rope looks great. I'll be ordering some after the holidays when shipping eases up some. I don't want to add to the gift shipping if I don't have to.

Thank you both. I'll definitely do that next time. I can sure see how useful a plane is now though. I'll eventually have to learn how to sharpen the blade too.

Yes if the wood tears out the fix is to switch the direction of planing.

The same thing happened to me when I tried to taper a dowel with a plane. I think it has to do with the grain direction, which I found difficult to see in most dowels. It worked better for me to plane in the opposite direction on that side.

I have a question for you guys. The kit provides dowels for the masts but they need to be tapered. The instructions suggest planning them to square then octagonal . I have a nice Stanley plane that I never used before so I decided to try it on a cut off first. It went really well. I was able to plane it down to a tapered octagonal then sand it round. When I tried it on the actual mast dowel the first 3 sides went perfectly. The forth side wanted to grab and tear out. Is this because the blade is dull? It was giving me nice curly shavings when it seemed to cut well.
BTW, I will be using this method from now on. I think I need to make some kind of fixture to hold the parts though. Is that what is called a shooting board?
Thanks, Albert

I reached a huge milestone on my Cheerful build yesterday. With the completion of the winch, I'm now finished with the inboard details and fittings and ready to start with the bowsprit, mast, spars, and rigging. It's taken 15 months of daily work to get from where I had finished the exterior planking to here. So in celebration, after a morning of touch up, and careful dusting, here are a ton of photos. Haha. The top photo is roughly where I picked up 15 months ago after a 6 1/2 year break. I've spent time since my last post making the winch from scratch, and the bowsprit step (which is not yet glued down) from Chuck's mini kit. I built the bowsprit step first to get the shape of the top of the timber heads and then copied those on the winch, so they'd look the same. The last photo is my humble little work area. To all those contemplating a Cheerful build, all the tools I've used fit in about a 3rd of the pictured plastic tool box, so you don't really need much, besides time, to embark on this project.

I've been slowly working on the deck houses. I'm pretty happy with the way its going so far. I'm really looking forward to getting to the masts but it's still a ways away for me. It's been fun figuring out the best way to work out assemblies.

The repairs have started. It's going to take a little time to get back into the flow for sure. I need to get back to an organized workbench to. I will work on better tool storage and keeping a clean work surface. Here are a couple of pictures of how it looks right now with some repairs done.

It's sure been a long time since I posted on this build. After my wife had her stroke, it was the last thing on my mind. I'm getting ready to pick it back up. In all this time I've lost some parts and 2 sheets of the plans. The nice folks at Model Expo replacement them with no questions asked. The hull fell off a pretty high shelf and has some damage that needs to be fixed. Since it will need a re-paint I'll take to opportunity to go with the yellow hull. It will be a good model to get my mojo back and get my mind occupied with something positive. I'll start posting regularly as soon as I get it on the bench.
I have an Armed Virginia Sloop kit to build next and then Chucks beautiful Cheerful kit. If all goes well I might get started on the Winchelsea next year. I'll have to see if I feel like my skills are up to it. I'm so glad to be in a position to get back at it and be among friends here on the forum. I see we have lost a couple of good people since I was a regular and that really saddens me. They were good people always with a kind word and willingness to help.

Thank you Glenn and Brian. Also thanks for all the likes.
Moving aft I added the framing jig just like at the bow. Six of the aft frames and then the last gun port frames were added. After that the last frames were filled in the gap. I'll start fairing these frames before I add the wing transom and quarter pieces.
Everything is coming along nicely!

Color change is done and some work on the deck houses. I sure don't have the fine craftsmanship that some of you guys have. I hope it's something that will come with practice and learning. And how do you guys keep your work area so neat?
