At what point of modifications would a kit become "Kit Bashed"

Recommended Posts

I appreciate many of the comments made and all have validity. Having said that I think I will stick with my original query/statement when building my Bounty. Kit bashing is when you get so frustrated or fed up with the kit that you take a hammer or similar object and 'bash' the kit !!!

This thread seems to have generated a lot of interest and comment. Let me see if I've got it right:

Kit - built straight out of a box using the manufacturer's instructions (if you can understand them!)

Modified kit - as above, but with additional details that have been purchased, such as photo-etched sheets, rope or blocks.

Kit-bashed - one or more kits that have been cobbled together to represent a different subject than the kit(s)

Semi-scratch - from based on a kit, but heavily modified using parts made by the builder, to builder fabricated with some commercial parts

Scratch - completely fabricated from raw materials by the builder, no commercial parts

Museum quality - an over-used and hence now meaningless term (Yeah, I'm sticking my neck out on this one!)

The 'semi-scratch' definition seems to be the broadest, if my summary is correct. Should there be sub-sets in this category?

'Museum' or 'Competition' would entirely depend on the particular institution.  Beyond that, I think it's unwise to pursue that particular category.  The institution or sponsoring organization will let you know the rules or requirements.

To continue the metaphor from above, 'that dog won't hunt'.

druxey is pretty close to my thinking.

Kit-bashed is better said to use a kit as a base, using other kits parts, not kits parts etc..to make a model other than that the kit was meant to be.  For instance, I could bash the Revell Arizona kit into the Arizona as she appeared in the photos when the pres was aboard; as she appeared when built with cage masts, etc; as she appeared on 12/7/41, even as she appears now, at the bottom of Pearl Harbor.  All those kit-bashings are still making the kit's original subject, Arizona, but different versions that that kit does not allow for out-of-the-box.
