Hi

I am building Chucks 'Cutter Cheerful' and would like to try using Boxwood as per his example but having trouble sourcing in the UK. I have mailed a couple of model wood supplier but they have not got back to me yet..so being impatient not a trait good for model boat building LOL!!--

Is there a UK supplier someone can recommend or is there another similar wood that is available in the UK I could use?

Thanks Ian

Ian,

I take it you when through this topichttp://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/6502-uk-timber-suppliers/?  There's several suppliers listed.

and there's this one:  http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/384-where-to-buy-wood/   I think I've heard Arkowood ships to the UK.

Hi Ian.

Workshop heaven stocks all sorts of fine timber.

http://www.workshopheaven.com/tools/Boxwood_Squares_20-25mm.html

Most of the Boxwood is small in size and not very long.

You could contact them ans inquire about larger sizes.

Regards Antony.

Hi I an

Try timberline in kent. Ring them and tell them what your doing and they can probably source some suitable timber from their box making dept. Another company I have used is original marquetry .co.UK. They sell a range of saw cut veneers including box butit tends to be either 3mm or 1.5 mm in thickness.

Hope this helps

Cheers......mick

Hi.

The 'Workshopheaven' boxwod what Anthony mentioned is meant to be for carving. Not suitable ie. for planking, not only because of its small length, but due to its phisical properties (stiff, difficult to bend above a certain thickness). It is for carving, and it is very good for it. For frames, planking, etc. the Costello 'boxwood' is the right stuff, if your choice is Boxwood.

Janos

Thanks Janos.. I never new that.

I learn something new every day..

Hi Ian;

If you do source boxwood from any other countries,  one thing to bear in mind is that it should come from as cold a place as possible.  As far North or South as it can be,  or as high up.  This is because the colder the climate,  the slower the tree grows,  and the tighter together the rings.  It is the closeness of the rings that dictates the fineness of the grain.

All the best,

Mark P

Previously built models (long ago, aged 18-25ish) POB construction. 32 gun frigate, scratch-built sailing model, Underhill plans.

2 masted topsail schooner, Underhill plans.

Started at around that time, but unfinished: 74 gun ship 'Bellona' NMM plans. POB

On the drawing board: POF model of Royal Caroline 1749, part-planked with interior details. My own plans, based on Admiralty draughts and archival research.

Always on the go: Research into Royal Navy sailing warship design, construction and use, from Tudor times to 1790.
