Hello

This is a mini-update. I have finally got some time over to start the planking.

Off to a humble start:

post-6862-0-59835700-1485983499_thumb.jpg

As you see I really suck at planking. But there will be a second layer so...

The planking goes towards the bottom of the hull. I have to turn her upside down and therefore broken some of the tops of the frames. It'll be fun gluing them back on....

Hopefully I'll have something more exciting next time...

Pucko,

Knowing your ability of recovery from minor mishaps the broken tops is nothing, just take it easy with no rush.

Is it to late to redo some of the planking?

I too am thankful for double planked hulls to help cover my mistakes and I have also broken many of those extended frame parts off when she is upside down. I just mark where they came from and reattach later when I am done planking the bottom.

It is good to see more work being done on the actual ship! Smart of you to wait till you had a lot of planking to do a bunch at the same time.

Two tips from my own practice:

Whenfairing your frames, make sure you go all teh way: the plank should make contct everywhere, most of the time that implies that the whole charring on the outside has gone when you're finished

Second: dont start a new plank on the frame, but in between, and glue a part of wood behind the connection, that way, there will be a smoother run of the plank.

Hi

And specially for that price.

Bamboo as for planking?

Wondering if DeAgostino is doing this to all the "subscription" kits?

The answer to the question is yes. 3 kits I have built so far and All had bamboo strip wood. If you look closely you can see the dark area of the knuckles.

I replaced mine with good quality wood I milled myself.

If you use it...make sure all the tools for cutting are very sharp. I like the look of bamboo as a finish but it's not easy to work with.

BTW nice build.

Thanks for the replies. The ****** planking is not all my fault. Lot of the strips are a little wavy and that results in the gaps. I will have to do a lot of sanding and filling anyway so I thought this could just go along.

The plus side of bamboo is that it's very easy to bend.... So I'll use them. Just hope the final layer is better quality.

I've done worse planking than this, (and better) and got quite a good result in the end so I'll let these strips stay on. I don't want to risk the frames breaking as they are quite thin.

Hopefully the planking will get better....

Hello Nisse,

If you can wait I would recommend to start building after issue 19 or 20.... A lot of trouble with aligning etc can be avoided.

You can always paint decorations until then....  :)

I keep all the painted figures in the plastic bags they came in... Until I find some kind of box with lots of compartments (80 would do).

Puckotred and Nisse,

I would recommend the boxes used for fish tackle.

I am using them and wrap the figurines in silk paper.

Then label each compartment on the lid of what they contain, maybe with a picture of the figure.

At last the new shipment arrived. Issues 33 to 36.

And this is what I got:

False deck parts, another 51 planks (239 so far) and some deck planks. no decorations this time.

post-6862-0-51749500-1487351054_thumb.jpg

This is how far I've come with the first planking:

post-6862-0-87073900-1487351055_thumb.jpg

Planks differ some in both width and thickness, but I will have to do some heavy filling and sanding anyway so...

post-6862-0-88424800-1487351056_thumb.jpg

Three of the deck parts in place.

post-6862-0-98478200-1487351057_thumb.jpg

No matter how I measured and checked, the slots on the decks did not align with the frames. There are reinforcements from earlier that line up correctly but the frames are still off. I knocked them loose but hit a little too hard on one and it broke.

Everything fit nicely with the beam.

The right frame was pulled forward a little and glued in place later

And the last piece of deck:

Hi Mr. Pucko.

When i see the planking of you with that bamboo then i'm happy that i use planks from my Aggy.

There is a lot of work for you what about filling and sanding.....

But i have faith in you that you bring it to a good end.

Yes, not the best of material. (And not the best planking skill) But then again it's very easy to bend, and nice to sand.... tested a little sanding on the hull and it was very easy, much easier than walnut or the stuff that came with the Bohuslän. That took forever to sand down. So the finishing job won't take long... I hope.  ^_^

I have now caught up with the instructions regarding the planking.

This is how she looks after 184 planks:

IMG_0855.jpg.7d321647fc8589e9be9a512c91d5efbe.jpg

A lot of variations in thickness and width.

I gave up early trying to sand the planks so the thickness would be equal.

IMG_0856.jpg.385287faad50edb75072c004bb106969.jpg

She's one big fat mama...

You get the feel of her size now that the hull is coming along.

IMG_0857.thumb.jpg.35d1801fd89a98447a40e52bea300bf1.jpg

Iphone box there so I won't break any more frame tips when turning her over:

IMG_0858.jpg.0941e89c629dde8ad3732bdf84d0b712.jpg

A lot of sanding ahed of me (but not yet). But until the next shipment I have a few decorations to paint.

Nice work Pucko! Can't wait until how it looks sanded. I will catch up on you but you will always be one delivery in front of me :)

I was thinking, the simulated floor for the battery deck, wouldn't there actually be gratings instead? I don't have the real vasa plans yet but I will check it. But maybe nothing is to be seen anyway. And also what do you think about the long guns that has arrived so far in the kit? For me the muzzle breaks looks very funny. I compare them to the Claytons fantastic work for the Vasa 1:10.

Jörgen: I'm not sure I follow you. I don't see all that much of a difference on the cannons. maybe ours are a little longer? There should be gratings on the batterydeck alright. Don't know what DeAgostini is up to there but... One could always make some and put there. And you wrote, not too much will be visible down there...

I guess you will catch up with me before I get to the sanding...

In April these will come:

Jan: I solved it the way politicians solve problems... I just pretended there was no problem.. ;)

No, I sanded the frame down to size.

The monthly shipment has arrived!

Hull planks (52 of them), Upper stern decks and 2 metal pieces:

They are only labelled as "Metal components"

but I think they are the roofs of some of the doors on one of the stern decks...

It took about a half hour to assemble this months parts ;)

The two decks:

The doors, or whatever it's called...

The single aftmost door:

IMG_0881.jpg.fa4772fdad23f344322543f9d658633f.jpg

Somehow the deck was 3-4 mm too low so I had to lift it up and hang it on the door frames:

Later the planking will help keep it in place...

The metal pieces that came are the roofs of the doors at the bottom of the photograph.

More to come when I start planking again...

I have also more or less finished the Battlestation now. Only have to mount the netting on top and do a couple of ropecoils for the left cannon.

This is how it looks:

Planking is now on par with instructions.

A lot of cutting must be done to fit the keel and bowsprit:

IMG_0886.thumb.jpg.f159dc20c0859f4592a6e3aa8ed97892.jpg

IMG_0887.jpg.db937f854a7ea2330e580fc8430d2fb0.jpg

Why you should not use wet planks. A lot of shrinking when they dry:

IMG_0891.jpg.fff0bab24a2dc046ade13cad2e8cfff7.jpg

Instructions wants you to start planking the deck now but I'll wait a little longer before I do that.

I got some new brushes and stuff so I'll do the rest of the decorations soon.

Puckotred,

Very nice re-thinking of the instructions.

The combo of "wood - water - drying " which equal  shrink  and gaps is something we all can relate to.

Like the recovery you did.

Looks good Pucko. I think it is worth to wait now until bowparts and other visual parts starts to arrive so some planning can be made how to do things. I don't like the instructions at all for how they want to build the ship.
