did a bit more planking tonight 1 hour to do half the remaining deck

 

this weekend I will also stock up on the paints needed. for the hull I am going to try and get some spray cans for the hull painting. never done airbrushing but I want to get a nice smooth finish for it

airbrush is nice to have.   I didn't use it a lot when I was doing the plastic builds,   but I've found it to be a god-send with the wood builds.

     you don't need to buy these expensive ones either.......Testors puts out some that are economical,  costing around $30.00 {US}

the one I've been using for a couple of years now,  is so simple to use and clean.   the only thing about them,  is they use the compressed air cans.   I was able to adapt it to my 25 gal air compressor with no problem.  check out the EZ line of airbrushes.....they are simular to what I have.   it's called  the  "amazing air" kit.......comes with everything you need.

 

nice job on the planking.......gonna look great with the bulwarks around them

thanks Mick. no i havent gotten a place yet and display cases are expensive even if you make them yourself.

so i am really thinking of buying a big display case (something like these : http://www.bethelshopfitting.com.au/index.php/products/s/17/glass.display.showcases )

 that would fit all of my models and more. although expensive in the end it would be cheaper then all individual cases.

 

thanks Popeye . i had alook and yes that Ez airbrush set would be whta i would go for. for now though i am going to see if my store got the spraycans. i wil only need white and dark green. cheaper way to try out if spray painting is for me or not.

Would bring all the models very nicely together though

With the lighting as well they would look beautiful

I did build an aquarium some time ago and that is all a display case is

I actually thought of an aquarium for the Virginia and asked at the fish shop . because it wouldn't be a standard size it would come down to around $200 he said . and that's for the smallest ship I have and without the wooden base.

 

 

yesterday I finished planking the aft deck

 

today I worked on the little structure. it has a small ridge on top made by 2x2 dowels.

I will try and price up the acrylic sheets, the silicone and a piece of wood for the base though

And we wouldn't want to upset the Admiral would we

things are going well but soon I need to put my attention back to the King . I feel like I am ready to tackle the last few problems so I have smooth sailing till the finish

 

today I raced to the hobby store before it closed to get my paints :

 

undercoat spray can, dark green and white spray can, dark green and white for the smaller work and light brown dark brown and brass. there are a few other colors needed but I should have those in my rack of revel colors

 

most of the day spend on making gratings

 

finished one. used mitre cut corners to make it look nicer

was going to ask which of these doors looks best : edge of door even with the wall , door on top of wall or something in between but the flash has made the picture all white

 

will retry to take it tomorrow

 

the ridge on top of the structure is finished and filler is applied to fill the little cracks.

Questions

Is you camera on it's highest settings???

And do you use Macro?????

 

Had another look at the photo and I am not sure about which is best

Maybe if you do take a better photo

MIck yes macro is on photo is set at 2MP as I think it gives a great result and each photo takes about 1/2 MB. Don't see th e point in making them bigger and it would add a lot to the disk space the forum would need

 

no the problem here was not to use a flash on a white surface

 

first picture left door totally inside wall, left one stuck on top of wall. the unpainted area underneath the door is where a 1x3 strip of dark green wood will be attached

 

this one has the left door sticking out about 1mm other door is still on top of the wall

 

what I do realised is that it will be difficult to cut out a door and 2 windows in the curved wall of the structure I am working on, because the curved wall is actually 5 small pieces of plywood stuck together. cutting in to that will most likely collapse the whole wall

slightly sticking out of the opening is good,  seeing as they have the hinges on them.   if they didn't,  I would say to indent them,  and give them a door jam treatment.

Maybe it's just me.... But it seems like the hinges were moulded on the outside of the door frame, and not the actual door.... Most modern weather tight doors should stand proud of their frames anyway. If it was up to me, I'd fill in that concave door and redo the porthole and handle at the new surface.

 

Otherwise, the closest is the one on the right in your photos.

Looking at your photo then the one above, it certainly looks as if the doors do need to be proud

Also if, as you say, it may damage the substructure if you attempt to rebate them, sticking them on has to be the way to go

hmm after some thinking I asked the admiral and the choice has been made

 

so I filled up the hole

 

 

I have considered going with Andy's suggestions but don't think I could make it look good . turning the doors over would have worked but the handle is very small so I don't know how I would add that and the hinges would be on the wrong side

 

so they are going to stay the way they are. same goes for the windows

 

not sure if I will be doing much the rest of the week since I have training (deploying sccm 2012) in the city which means traveling by bus and train and coming home late (and tired)

first day done and I did have the energy to do a bit of painting (doors and windows)

 

no Sjors I don't get tired from sitting in the bus, I do get tired from standing in the bus

 

these days I travel by car to my work but before that i used public transport : bus to the station , train to next station, train to another station , bus to work and then the same thing at night . 50 minutes in the morning 1 1/2 hours at night and that for only 15 km and yes most of that travel is running and standing (sometimes packed as sardines)
