actualy planking is not so far away now

yesterday I started on the forward structure

 

with all the preparations of drilling holes and marking where doors and windows go work progressed good (the forward deck is only dry fitted)

 

just a bit of touching up the paint work here and there

 

the single eyebolt next to the right most door is for the handrails next to the stairs. I am waiting to fit the forward deck on top so I can determine the angle off the stairs and drill the final 2 holes. then I can add the handrail and the last window

 

after that its just a few more reinforcement to install and fix the 4 parts of the bulwarks and planking can begin

 

at least after the sawdust festival of the fairing of the bulkheads

It is very difficult to see what is to come just looking at a blank deck, but the access doors and the windows look really good as do the handrails

they are better but dont expect too much. for instance for the placement of the doors,windows and handrails no measurements are given and no plans are provided

 

so i used the photos (and part list lengths) to calculate and guestimate thier positions.

 

and so far no real errors in the parts, not like the kom where you have plenty of errors to fix up

tonight I glued the deck in place. the mast dowel is inserted to verify the holes in the deck line up for proper insertion

I have nearly finished the guitar and then I think I will concentrate on the Will Everard as I am close to rigging on the Endeavour and I want to practice on the Everard as it were

did a few hours of sanding today

 

before sanding :

 

I work in steps. first I sand off the sharp parts of the reinforcements making them even with the bulkheads and the keel

 

then I slowly keep sanding till all the laser cut burns are gone

 

the 2 reinforcements in between the bulkheads at the stern are really difficult to sand

 

I still have lots to do on the bow and stern areas and I haven't even started on the bulkheads in between so I doubt I ll be able to finish this weekend

It's so important not to skip it at all isn't it

I have got quite a bit of sanding and making good still on the Will

It's not pretty work, but it's got to be done

The more accurate it's done now the easier it goes later

Nice work, Adriaan.  Looks to be fairing up nicely.   Are you using a long strip of wood with sandpaper glued to it?  Or something shorter?

actually I find it more grinding on the muscles in my arm , after 2 days its really hurting and my hand feels numb

 

i am using a half round file and a square one and some sandpaper wrapped around a wooden block for the big areas

i guess the square file gives the same result as a long strip of wood

 

as the bow end needs to be sanded to a point i slowly reduce the width until only a fine line is left, this to make it easy to see where the middle is

 

the master plank is 1 mm thicker and fits in the slots in all the bulkheads, so to make sure it doesn't stick out i filed out a slot in the bow too

 

finally i sand it down to a point and use a wooden strip to make sure it runs smoothly all the way

 

after one and a half hours of sanding the bow is done

 

finished all the bulkheads in between and all that is left is the stern, but its getting too dark now.

i estimate at most an hour or two more of sanding but that will have to wait till next weekend.

 

i ll work on some other parts in the mean time and also spend some time on finishing the kom

yea....take your time with this......it one of the hard parts you hear tell of.   your doing well in shaping the contour of the hull.  I use one of those dry wall sanding blocks.......not just because it has a handle,  but because it spans over three ribs at any given time.

I'm with Popeye on the 3 frames at a time idea.  I use a 12" sanding bar.  Patience here or it bites you later.  Looking good so far.
