Daniel: I painted the whole thing with thinned fiberglass resin before any color went on.

Qwerty didn't give us any photos of constructing his hull, but he generally used the same method I did on my three hulls (links in my signature).  One of them is the boat he's based his model on which will give you some notion of where he's headed with Byzantium.

Jerry you just reminded me that I never posted any older pictures as I promised in my first post. They are a good way to show how far I've come.

I thought that I had more from during the planking process but they must not have been backed last time I restored my computer so the only copies went down with 1.0.

Lextin,

She's come a long way since those early pictures.  Looking great and I, for one, can't wait for pictures of her in the water and sailing.

I have decided to use a windlass after all and get rid of the capstan. I want to use a purchase type windlass but they are considerably more complex than a windlass that uses bars, would I be able to easily fake it?

Since I decided to go with the windlass instead of the capstan I was left with a large area of blank deck towards the stern so I framed in a new hatch and cut a hole in the deck. I will make a separate board to mount the rudder servo under this new hatch, plus I will be able to get the battery in and out easier now as well as having access to the stern area.

Here are some pics of the new windlass. I still need to make the travelers and the whelps but am happy with how it came out. I also painted the riding bits red.

While transferring the pictures to my computer the connection was lost between the two devices and it deleted most the pictures on my camera aswell as rearranging the folders in my camera. I never had this happen before.

Well not quite finished as I found out after writing my previous post I still hadn't made the warping drums on either side. I have since made the drums and will post pics of the NOW complete windlass soon.

I painted the name on the stern. I also made paper cutout of me in 1:20th scale, I look a little short in the picture with the windlass but its just the angle the pic was taken from, the rail actually about waist height.

She's coming along nicely, Lextin.  You look fit and proper for her.  When she hits the water, I'll wager you'll wish you really were that tall. :)

No I don't think that I will wish I was that size. I don't know what was going trough my mind but when I made the paper cutout I made it at 1:24th scale not 1:20th scale :( A new correctly sized cutout is in the works.

My rails are kinda short so I have been thinking a bought extending them up with stanchions. I made a mockup rail for the stern so I could show what I have in mind. Any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated also what is a good way to make the stanchions? and how far apart should they be?.

I have made some of the railing but have stopped until I figure out the hammock cranes. I made the first two hammock cranes and rigged them with some hemp cord and plastic (onion bag) netting for the picture. I also made a mockup of the stovepipe, I will try to get some 1/2 inch brass tube for the finished one. I am thinking of adding fighting tops to the mast as well.

I was wondering where would the head be located on a mid 18th century schooner?

Not much progress since my last post, the rails are still not finished but I did make a new (correctly sized) plug for the ships boats. I pulled one hull of the plug but there were some oil canning issues so I made some modifications to the plug to fix these on later hulls. Now for the real reason I am posting today, I think the I am finally ready to purchase the three remaining servos and want to make sure that my current servo layout good before I commit. I am planning on getting two Hitec HS 815 servos (one for the rudder and one for the fore sail/jibs) then one Hitec HS 785 fore the square sails.

I just cast the keel and am currently waiting for it to cool down before I release it from the mold. it is 1.5 inches tall 1 inch wide and 22 inches long and should weigh (if my calculations were correct) just over 16 pounds before cutting. the forward end will be rounded and the aft end tapered.

I have shaped the keel bulb and decided how to make up the extra weight, I will be making a smaller weight that will be attached between the fin and bulb.

I ordered the servos, they should be arriving sometime before the end of the week.
