HMS Victory by Yon - Caldercraft 1:72

Thanks David

My nightmare contimues.  I made a big rookie mistake with the gallery glazing as it has clouded over due to the CA fumes to I've had to take the gallery off and start again.

I know whart you mean about matching the brass profile - I think I'm going to have the same issue....

Cheers

for the brass profile,on the stern i am going down the route of using a plastic strip layed flat against the hull, and one at 90 degrees to it to form a window sill, - well that is the intention at present -  yes i have pinched the idea from Gil, but looking at the photo's of the real vessel, there is a defined sill under the windows that wraps around the galleries that cannot be obtained through the brass profile alone

Its all part of Kev's journey, bit like going to the dark side, but with the lights on

Hi Guys

Good to see you back Derek, I think I'm now OK with the windows I just have to watch the CA. Kevin, I agree about the sill (see the bottom picture below) although on my model it will have to be a very specific angle to get it at right angles to the hull as my stern is sloping inwards at that point.  I might experiment with wood strip instead of styrene as its easier to work with.

Overall I'm still having a very hard time with the galleries.  Mainly because I messed up the profiles right at the beginning. My errors are compounding as I work downwards and I haven't even bothered with the bottom skin, I just filled the gap with filler. Still I think I will get there in the end and then start all over again on starboard.  Here's some pics - not very pleaseant viewing I'm afraid....

you could always contact jotika and ask/purchase replacements, whats the worst they are going to say?

Good suggestion but the problem is really with the profiles and to replace them properly I would have to take the whole stern off.  I'm having to mess around with the skins to get them to fit the profiles.  If I succeed, I don't think you will be able to tell that the profiles were wrong. Its hard but I think I can see light at the end of the tunnel.

Hello yon

I don't know if this will help as I cannot tell what is actually going on, but to tidy things up, maybe you could use some marquetry

Sheeting in places as skins, which is easy to work with. I used it on both the upper and lower counters to tidy them up and it's easier and quicker than planking . As Kevin said give jotika a ring and tell them which sheet you need. They will definitely send you one no prob. Ring them now. DAVID

Hi David

Thanks for that but I think its going to be OK once I clean up the painting and put on the decorations.  I've cleared my diary for the next 5 days to tackle these !

I like the marquetry idea generally though so I've placed an order with amazon to add to my box of materials.

Cheers

if you ask for the profile and the platforms, you will not have to remove the strern, just sand down to the original hull, find the location slots are rebuild  from there, soak your existing profiles to remove windows

the worst jotika will say is - no can do

You're right, thinking about it - I wouldn't have to take the whole stern off.  I think I'm going to finish off the port side and see whether I can make a decent job of it with paint, sandpaper and filler.  If it doesn't work I'll try Jotika and strip down the patterns. If they won't replace them I think I could make some up without too much difficulty

I should be able to post some pictures later today and go from there.

Cheers

A quick update....

I've managed to complete the port side quarter gallery except for the brass profile which hopefully will cover up more of the mistakes. Its not going to win any prizes but I'm reasonably happy with it considering what it looked like this morning.

Over the last few days I've finished the quarter galleries including a shelf along the stern.  I did not put the lowest of the copper profile around the quarter gallery - it just looked too big so I used a strip of wire instead.  I don't really understand how the kit designers expected the stern profiles to be done according to their instructions.  For me it was a case of improvising and experimenting.

So that's the stern finished for the time being.  Next I made up the bulwarks and capping rails for the poop deck.  I now have the flag lockers to do although I am missing the sheet to make up the internal part for one of them (I think Derek had the same problem).  Fortunately I was going to cover one of the lockers in canvass anyway so no delays while I wait for the part.

Some pics...

Well done it looks excellent. It was me who had the prob with the lockers. I phoned caldercraft/ jotika, and he knew exactly what I was going to say when I mentioned the lockers. There was a fault on production, and the sheets were getting cut in half. Just ring them, no prob. Mine was sent out, and I received it a day later. Yes it's looking really smart now. I bet you are looking forward to the gunport lids!!!! Not!!!

I have my last 38 ready to fit, starting tonight. Well done you , keep up the good work DAVID

Thanks very much guys.

David - I was intending to cover the lockers with material. I bought some tissue-like stuff which was referred to in Kevin's log about making sails (can't remember what its called). Then I was going to cover one completely and have the other one turned up a little showing the flags underneath so I should only need the internal part for one locker.  That's the plan anyway - if it doesn't look very good I'll phone Jotika.  Good luck with your lids - I'm certainly not looking forward to those !

Cheers

Yon

A very quick update as I don't think I'll get much build time over the next few days.

I've finished the flag lockers with one showing the flags and the other with the canvass cover on.  I'm reasonably happy with how they turned out although it was a bit time consuming.  I then finished off the poop and made a start on the poop ladder assemblies.

Thanks Kevin

I ended up using "modelspan" tissue which I discovered on the pdf about sails which is linked to your log.  Originally I thought to use it to cover the lockers but its too thin.  I cut out a rectangle and then folded it several times using a pin to make the crease and then dipped it in a little PVA to hold it in shape.

Cheers
