Wasan 1628 by Nazgul - FINISHED - Billing Boats Vasa 1:75

Recommended Posts

Hey all! Ive been working on the round gunports on the weatherdeck. They are very unsymmetrical and quite different from eachother and I wanted to try and and get that look on my model.

Here are some pics on the real ship that I took the pics at the museum.

And two on the 1:10 model. They are too thick and to me look idealized.

And finally are pics of how mine turned out. The ones closest to the stern are based on the Landstöm book, he thought they would sit differently, and sits to high. For me the best soultion was to do them in halves.

Your build with all of your first hand references at the actual ship and the museum's model are priceless. Someone else mentioned it before but I'll 2nd the idea - your build is looking nicer than the museum model!! You make great efforts to get the 'wonky' feel of the original where the museum model is more 'perfect'. Just my humble opinion.

Best wishes,

Matti,

Nice pics. Your painting details on those small creatures that run along the breaks at the upper railings is so excellent. Nice work !

More nice work Matti....but I just noticed something on the original I never have before.

On the lower gun ports, here's the pic you posted that shows it best

Am I seeing it right or is it shadows, the right-most doesn't appear as it could be shadow.... They look to have a relief cut into the wale for the gunport lid to fit in above the actual port. Is it me just seeing something that is a trick of the lighting or is she this way?

Also, did all the gun port doors have lions heads originally on the inside?

Cheers everyone, your kind comments are very nice and gives plenty inspiration!

Keith, I agree with Kriss that its the shadows. Im fairly sure all the gunport doors had lions, but the two small message ports didn't have lions however, I asked Fred Hocker about it earlier and I think I remember correctly.

Remember not to take the colors in the reference pics as gospel a I changed the contrast and lightning in some some of them with photoshop to bring out details.

Speaking of reference pics, here are a compilation of pics of an old friend of ours ;)

I kind of figured that was the case. The shadows on the shroud chains aren't in parallax which indicates more then one light source. The combined light sourcing really makes that right gun port appear to have a relief though. Another trick of the Light.

I thought they had lions on all the ports, and one can see the wood colour difference on the inner port door where the lions appeared to have been. Especially on the 2 left ports under the channel. Its hard to believe that visible after all this time under water.

Here's a question since the question of lighting came up. All the pictures I've seen from the Wasan museum seem to be dimly lite. I was just curious as to the lighting they use in the museum. I know many older practices have had to be changed on relics as the light, humidity and other factors effect the preservation of the relic. For example the US declaration of independence is nearly completely bleached from sunlight exposure. I've also read that the high CO2 and humidity of visitors in the great pyramids was causing issues. I was just wondering if you knew anything about the constraints used at the museum to preserve her for future generations. that is other then the LONG bath and propping up due to her weight. I wonder if the museum is humidity controlled?

Those pictures certainly make it obvious as to it's identity Matti :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D .Looking at the pics,so much of the blue is actual structure and not carving.I personally think it looks like some sort of blue and gold mutant Catfish having a bad day.In the absence of historical evidence,I shall still view it as the 'blue thingy'.You do have something to work to though to replicate it.

Kind Regards Nigel

Keith: Yeah it is pretty low light in the museum and they have climate controle. Here is info from the museum page:

http://www.vasamuseet.se/en/Preservation--Research1/To-preserv-Vasa/Climate/

Vasa is slowly dying and they are building a construction to make her stronger and make her life longer.

Nigel, I just have to try and see if I can make the thingie. Ill start right away. ;)

Cheers, yeah there is a face there.

A is some sort of blue monster/dragon.

The golden wings of it turns into B a face, a mascaron (perhaps Poseidon?) on its back. So looking from behind its a face.

C looks like two seamonsters side by side with the A monster.

I will try to make the red fins for C.

Matti. Is there a DVD available? Where???

There aren't but two options: do it FAST, or do it RIGHT.

Last finished projectsRoyal Ship Vasa 1628; French Vessel Royal Louis 1780. 1/90 Scale by Mamoli. 120 Cannons

Future projects already in my stash: Panart: San Felipe 1/75; OcCre: Santísima Trinidad 1/90;

So much to build, so little time!

indeed very nice movies, I have seen these already before and my daughter then saved these movies on my laptop for later review.

only watching is already a pleasure.

If I could see he movie with English subtitles would be more perfect.

I assume this can be ordered by Amazon or equal webshops as I do not see a weborder possiblity at the museum shop

Jan V.

current build: Vasa-1628 Corel / Battle Station Mantua/Panart,

Well Amazon has one (and I mean "one unit") of a Vasa Documentary selling used at 127 dlls, and filmed in 1996. I don't think is the one linked here.
