This is my first build log and first time planking.  After purchasing a few kits and not wanting to screw them up, I researched and researched and came up with this inexpensive kit that seemed promising.  But I think I was wrong however I realize there is no real beginner kits out there...and I’ve realized you can not compare yourself to the talent out there or you will never finish a kit.  So here goes...B9B46FEE-8E86-4CE0-A5B4-EFB303B707CB.thumb.jpeg.66f415a1dcf0bc12e7239e8d27707652.jpegC2D555FA-358B-45B1-A6B0-B2F0828099B9.thumb.jpeg.48571d838ad39e18c77a2760f368eb9f.jpeg

I installed the main frame (I’m learning the proper terms as I go) and stained here and there as I saw fit.  I was/am hoping to stain or use a natural finish on the hull.

So I stained some pieces and after reading many logs regarding this boat I decided to plank by the instructions rather than the other build logs...it might have been a mistake but I wanted to do it out of the box as any beginner would.  What I did realize later, was that the pie slice planks that were in the laser cut pieces were thicker than the planking wood supplied.  I think all kits assume some previous knowledge or experience.

I am glad I read through all of logs first because it did help quite a bit...again I followed the directions and realize now it would have been easier to wait on the decking. I used the nails as spacers but I realize now that per scale that would probably allow your ankle to fall through.0632014E-4803-495A-B35F-6719554198AC.thumb.jpeg.2a3ca60695660e3cc9e20dbf31843dc7.jpegDFCC5B92-F784-4D8B-BC03-125FA40A038D.thumb.jpeg.dc2a0c539ef5c967b3962856e44733d7.jpeg395A0812-2FAA-40DA-9C15-F2AB39FA8F7C.thumb.jpeg.4ad2732a94853bf63778bff2193671f9.jpeg0E0B8C66-D954-4AB3-B37B-E19D9E250F1E.thumb.jpeg.4551f296aafdf260867bbc78d78441bf.jpeg

I began the dreaded planking...as much as I read about planking...over and over...I found it a difficult concept.54E40528-EAC0-4B53-A464-F4FB7827D2AB.thumb.jpeg.bce8a871286bc89661d278ca5b9b4a97.jpeg The twisting of the wood was easier then I thought...I used boiling water, let it cool clamped it overnight and glued it in the morning.

Planking continued...and as I got frustrated I told myself beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  I mean who is the worst critic in anyone’s life? Also, I continued to follow the directions, and they had me leave that weird gap which I later fill with a little splitter.CC6CB288-0E72-402A-B93F-36ED7B4CF7C8.thumb.jpeg.fcc2e9324331fb5503508a2b0db20521.jpeg3CDABD63-4668-41AA-918E-DB306AD1FE6C.thumb.jpeg.eca367df199f874470e6795b3151107c.jpegD9B13B68-3555-472E-BE7F-C8D361701279.thumb.jpeg.9089ae3b059d0a8d0447db3a0bb6152e.jpegA0F00CC9-4282-463B-9C20-BC09FCE5669E.thumb.jpeg.f3ab25d1ee5cff744102ebbcdf59096f.jpeg

I really like the dewalt clamps and started with 1 bought 2 more.  I’ve also purchased flat billed alligator clips which I think will be nice in the future.

I ended up with these stupid little splitter on the bottom of the boat which the instructions showed...silly.

I remained stead fast and continued forward even though I was not impressed with my skill...I figured even if I have a bunch of ugly boats laying around, they are my ugly boats. 😜

I installed some other items and the final pieces of the hull.  I will get better with terminology I hope.

So I believe that the hull and main boat is complete.  It’s amazing what some sanding can do and if I show it to someone who doesn’t model they might be amazed!  C1F36D4C-EB0F-4DB5-9730-9F11B97122AE.thumb.jpeg.760e905e54361cf7bdff761b14e4ec21.jpegD12D87B2-3744-4D6F-826C-5BDBD3F60C24.thumb.jpeg.7743b9a365c0573184b3ef90e492f0b0.jpeg4A77ED3D-48CC-4B4E-8201-F21D8B3CC600.thumb.jpeg.d445e294e3386198a05e80b013ae73df.jpeg

And that is where I am at today.  I created this in hopes that new hobbyist take a look and realize that mistakes can be made, and almost always covered up.  I know I will get better with each and every kit I do.  I also need to learn to slow down.

After being frustrated with not being able to glue the rudder and hardware I decided to do the brass nails that came with the kit.  I drilled first worried that the wood would end up splitting, but I’m not sure I had anything to worry about.  They came out not too bad!  I give it a 6/10!F525163E-0632-4AC9-8092-0D73247C4329.thumb.jpeg.2b300c34914bbd126134a82c5178f480.jpeg72B20013-2A66-4CC7-9142-FDFDDAC67038.thumb.jpeg.83bf36cd0d574387ec71c164c57007ce.jpegA7F08B98-F876-402E-B1FC-AFE50749E900.thumb.jpeg.07fe2ba7e092150de38d225b8c7315d1.jpegD441316F-B6C1-48CB-9F6C-13207CC7E09E.thumb.jpeg.95e6b0fbee889b46c9c5dcf5f86c2263.jpeg52020E2C-6536-4439-A70B-2629ADCD14C9.thumb.jpeg.df7d4d6cffe660aa13ccdf5968881c51.jpeg

And now it is attached...I also built a handle instead of using the brass rod.

I’m up to the rigging...which I want to enjoy but I’ll be honest, I’m not enjoying the lack of knowledge I have and the lack of decent pictures or direction that comes with the kit.  I’m going to fake it so I can finish and begin working on a more enjoyable model.  I do believe it’s a good way to get used to some of the smaller items, I do also crave better quality threads.   I also have become addicted to the possibilities of this hobby.  I love the logs and everyone’s work.86B5AA09-ED5B-4215-98C3-B215FF9D63F5.thumb.jpeg.f8a9b7763a9df2d1b27ee4919ec41716.jpeg

Hi Duanelaker,

well done, mate!  I'm seeing myself in you!  I am a beginner, struggled with terminologies and without prior experience, so a complete noob.  But I am really keen as my kids wanted us to build some model ships.  I am still trying to read/study as much as I could.  It is quite overwhelming for me.  At least, you managed to complete this boat.  So again, hats off to you, mate!

Jag,

i am am not quite complete as I still have some rigging to do...but there were a few times I thought to myself that this wasn’t going the way I wanted and I wanted to start another one.  BUT, I somehow managed to tell myself that I had to complete this before moving on.  I can see completion just beyond the horizon...but it’s there!  There is so much unbelievable talent on this site i wish I saw more people and their learning curve.  Maybe I will motivate others to take on this amazing hobby without worrying so much about the outcome.  I can’t wait until my son is old enough to build boats with me if that is what he wants.  Good luck to you!

Finally completed the rigging!  Now all that’s left is to mount it to the base...so close now.

Great first effort Duane - as you have intimated, you have to be your most severe critic! Once you have finished, look critically over what you've done and vow to not repeat the inevitable mistakes next time (i'm assuming there will be a next time 😉) I'll need a dozen boat builds to get enough 'next times' to fix my mistakes but learn I will!

Now, what's next? ...... Pat

Building: Artesania Latina Endeavour

               Billings Roar Edge

Seriously thinking: Fairmile B launch (powered)

Bucket List: Dyfken, Beagle, Endurance

Pat,

i am thinking about the phantom, which is a solid hull.  However I have about a dozen ships to choose from as I got a little crazy when I couldn’t decide!  So I’m hoping there will be many more in the future 😊.  I’m also finishing a room that I am converting to a ship yard and once that’s done I will get more intimate with painting.  Thanks fork your support!

can someone tell me how to change the name of my log to include - FINISHED?

Hi David,

Great build log! It’s nice to see another newbie working on this kit, and more importantly, finishing it.

You seem to have the same idea as me. Build it as the plans, learn stuff and make sure it gets finished.

It so easy to get distracted by all the superb craftsmanship on display in here.

I’m about to embark on the rigging of my Jolly Boat. The instructions a vague at best, but by looking at your log it has cleared a few things up.

I’m also intrigued by your idea of rigging the mast, spar and boom separately from the main boat.

Something to ponder!

Anyway, well done on a great first build.

Jonny
