After purchasing a few kits and not wanting to screw them up, I researched and researched and came up with this inexpensive kit that seemed promising. But I think I was wrong however I realize there is no real beginner kits out there...and I’ve realized you can not compare yourself to the talent out there or you will never finish a kit. So here goes... Duanelaker Posted September 2, 2019 Author #2 Posted September 2, 2019 I installed the main frame (I’m learning the proper terms as I go) and stained here and there as I saw fit. I was/am hoping to stain or use a natural finish on the hull. So I stained some pieces and after reading many logs regarding this boat I decided to plank by the instructions rather than the other build logs...it might have been a mistake but I wanted to do it out of the box as any beginner would. What I did realize later, was that the pie slice planks that were in the laser cut pieces were thicker than the planking wood supplied. I think all kits assume some previous knowledge or experience. I used the nails as spacers but I realize now that per scale that would probably allow your ankle to fall through. The twisting of the wood was easier then I thought...I used boiling water, let it cool clamped it overnight and glued it in the morning. I’ve also purchased flat billed alligator clips which I think will be nice in the future. I ended up with these stupid little splitter on the bottom of the boat which the instructions showed...silly. the bow of the boat is not pretty.... I drilled first worried that the wood would end up splitting, but I’m not sure I had anything to worry about. They came out not too bad! I give it a 6/10! I’m going to fake it so I can finish and begin working on a more enjoyable model. I do believe it’s a good way to get used to some of the smaller items, I do also crave better quality threads. I also have become addicted to the possibilities of this hobby. I love the logs and everyone’s work. I put together my first set of rigging incorrectly and didn’t realize it right away...then when I did realize it I was going to fake it just to get it finished, but something inside said no...don’t rush it, take it apart and do it again. So after about an hour I got it back to where I was plus a little more and here are the pics. Even in life I need to stop settling and strive for excellence. I am a beginner, struggled with terminologies and without prior experience, so a complete noob. But I am really keen as my kids wanted us to build some model ships. BUT, I somehow managed to tell myself that I had to complete this before moving on. I can see completion just beyond the horizon...but it’s there! There is so much unbelievable talent on this site i wish I saw more people and their learning curve. Maybe I will motivate others to take on this amazing hobby without worrying so much about the outcome. I can’t wait until my son is old enough to build boats with me if that is what he wants. However I have about a dozen ships to choose from as I got a little crazy when I couldn’t decide! So I’m hoping there will be many more in the future 😊. You seem to have the same idea as me. Build it as the plans, learn stuff and make sure it gets finished. It so easy to get distracted by all the superb craftsmanship on display in here. I’m about to embark on the rigging of my Jolly Boat. The instructions a vague at best, but by looking at your log it has cleared a few things up. I’m also intrigued by your idea of rigging the mast, spar and boom separately from the main boat. Something to ponder! Anyway, well done on a great first build.
