US Brig Syren by Tigerdvr - Model Shipways - 1:64

Recommended Posts

I began this project in August 2012. I'm in the process of completing the Deck Fittings, Chapter 13.

I am attempting to keep the colors true to the ship's early service life. The deck would have been holy stoned

every morning so I am keeping it lighter than the deck fittings. I find positioning the fittings square and in proper relationship to other portions of the model to be a bit of a challenge. I have to learn to accept my own experience level.

Moderators, please forgive entering this as a build log if it doesn't fit the requirements , it seemed like the best choice.

Cheers, Harley

Finished Chapter 13 except for the deck eyebolts. Cap rail details next. Have been experimenting with cotton crochet which seems easier to work with than the supplied material. I wish I would have learned about this before I did the carronade tackle.

I am in the process of installing the hammock nettings and have found this to be quite a challenge. For those other relative beginners who don't have access to Chuck Passaro's great instructions for the U.S. Brig Syren , I'd like to offer some thoughts.

Chuck suggested using a piece of cardboard as a background to save your eyes, probably the best suggestion in this Chapter. The attached pictures (sorry, from my phone) demonstrate using white paper. I laced the inboard top of the net first. I am using a smooth piece of wood to give the net some temporary shape and keep the outboard portion of the net separated from the inboard portion. So far, I have only started over once.post-636-0-15024700-1372446179.jpgpost-636-0-72160300-1372446155.jpg

Now I see that I missed a hinge on one of the gun port lids--

Patience, Harley

Looking good so far.  It just takes patience.  The nettings add a lot to the overall appearance.

Wow!  you are doing a great job, love the hammock nettings!  But I have to agree with what has already been mentioned, you are killing me with so few pictures. :)  go Harley go.   Glad your recent accident with Syren wasn't worse.

First anniversary of laying down the keel for the brig Syren.

Just completed the long boat which was an adventure in itself.

Thanks to all those who have provided hints, advise, and encouragement

to those of us who are on the low end of the learning curve.

Now to finish the sweeps and tie down the long boat and onto

the bowsprit.

Cheers, Harley

I had to do the long boat oars over. The laser cut oars are way too big. I should have

checked the plans. The oars seem to fit now. Another learning experience.

Chapter 17 is finished. This is my first rigging work besides the carronades.

The masts are next.  I'll take the time to review more builder's logs and hit the books

before beginning. I enjoy the research and planning.

I am working on the masts. Keeping the flat surfaces square is a challenge. I am following the instruction manual sequence for the most part. I masked the rings on the foremast to paint the "iron" rings. I am not sure if that was worth the time. The masts are just resting on the ship not secured. I am painting the tops now, blocks and deadeyes come next.

This is more of a progress report than a build log. I am following Chuck's instruction sequence and methods so the masts are stepped to finish Chapter 17. The phone camera seems to distort the rake angle a bit. It looks better in person.

The only change from the kit materials is using Syren Company's blocks since they became available. I also switched from CA to Neutral ph Adhesive to secure lines during this phase of construction.

Building the Syren has been a great learning experience. MSW is an invaluable asset.

Standing rigging is next.

Very nice.  I rather like that color choice above the wales and we get to see it nicely now.  Don't sweat the rake angle on the mizzen......if  it matches the plans, it's fine!

WELL DONE!
