Today I did some small things.  I added the hand rails for the forecastle.  No image shows them, but I’m sure they had removable ones, cus getting up that ladder in a rolling sea must have been a struggle.

Looks great Rob.  I agree, at sea those ladders will have been difficult; they may have been removed during her adaption for mostly harbour work?

Pat,

Looking at Glory's fo'c'sle in the latest image shared by Mike, it appears that the ladders were repositioned so that they now both face inward from the bulkheads.

You still had to access the forecastle deck to raise and lower the anchors.    Ladders were stewed under the forecastle deck when not in use.

I noticed that as well. The heavy modifications made for her canary labors forced her forecastle ladders to be repositioned and forecastle deck access altered.   The image of her decks and the cabin boy show her port ladder removed, probably for whatever modifications or work the men/man who was kneeling was doing. Her forecastle deck was active with plenty of material lying around, so access wasn’t completely denied.  Her starboard ladder was probably still intact.

We are having many large tree’s limed or cut down, so I’m a bit busy. I did, however, get the sail on the fore royal yard.  Just need to add gaskets, bunt line blocks and weather

Then, I’ll be finished with all the upper yards.  I’ll save the main yard after I get the mast rigged with shrouds and rat lines and all of these other yards bent.

Rob,

Honestly, I never tire of seeing your beautiful model, especially the overall shots. Your second attempt at capturing your model in a similar pose as Mike's latest image is quite close. Just take another from a slightly higher angle and you'll get it exactly. What's really thrilling though, is how closely your model consistently is to Glory of the Seas herself. One request I make. When you do these lovely overall shots, can you please include the entire vessel? Thanks!

Rob,

In his latest message, copied to you, Mike included this impressive image as additional proof that the mooring bits on Glory's fo'c'sle were double wooden rectangular posts. Even though you had already replaced them, Mike wanted you to see indisputable evidence that you made the right decision.

It's from 1922-23 and shows Glory of the Seas near the beach at Fauntelroy, Washington. According to Mike it's one of few scenes taken from above her. This confirms conclusively that you made the right choices, both by raising fo'c'sle height which this image proves and replacing iron mooring bits with double rectangular wooden ones, also clearly visible on her fo'c'sle deck.

In addition, her cathead locations are much further back then previous images led us to believe. Your previous measurements showed her first fairlead chock in her splash rail was 9' the second being 6' further back. Visual evidence made it look like the catheads were 4' back from the second fairlead. However, from this beautiful image, the catheads are about 12' back from that second chock. One, I wish this image had been available before I sent my Glory of the Seas plan view to Nautical Research Journal for potential publication; two and three, my large sketch has to be revised yet again, along with the plan view. It just goes to show as more accurate pictures are unearthed, we continue to improve and refine our understanding of her overall appearance. For now, I'm going to send a note to the NRJ editor explaining about this latest discovery and offering to submit revised plans.

Meanwhile, it's my considered opinion that, when it comes to specific deck fittings, Mike is the undisputed authority.

Vlad....that ladder position was probably adopted because they made the forecastle edge alterations, by the addition of that beerier.  Probably for canary operations or for cold storage operations.  Needless to say, these are not her original configurations.  Her ladders faced forward as we have depicted them....in the typical fashion.

Can't wait to see your mods.

Vladimir,

Rob raising his fo'c'sle (forecastle as spelled by Mike) was not based on this latest scene of Glory at Fauntleroy. It was decided by the scene of her Cabin Boy facing forward. That's important due to the fact that the Cabin Boy pic was while Glory of the Seas was still a fully rigged sailing vessel. Later documentation from Mike shows her forward bulkhead height was precisely measured as being 5'9".

I particularly appreciate how Rob also incorporated her interior forward bulkhead walls as well.

Hey Rich...if you look closely at that boy picture of Glory....you can see the curve of the bow leading to both the forward mooring fairleads and the port Cathead.  I drew them out on a copy of the picture and I was able to identify lots of structures that other pics identify.

I'll have to wait to get home to post what I found...  Also it is apparent the man working is probably the ships carpenter....I see forge material and I believe the port forecastle ladder is on its side...probably what he is working on.......

I got caught up in family business last night....so I failed to do the homework on the forecastle.  But I did do a rudimentary drawing showing the curve of the bow.

If you look and compare to another image, you will see the port cathead identified....following up the curve of the prow, you can identify the two bow mooring fairleads.  I identified them with sloppy red circles.  The black dots are the inner forward edge of each fairlead.  If you look closely just forward of the inner fairlead you can see the curved leading edge of the trim work, that was identified on the new image of Glory that Mike provided.

You have to bounce from one image with known structures to identify them in another image that isn't so clear.

It is clear by all the work being done around the man kneeling, and by the forging or fabrication tooling, that the mechanic is repairing the port ladder...evidenced by it or part of it laying horizontal just behind him.

It is easy to ascertain from what we do know to what we suspect is going on.  The state of the debris found strewn around the deck along the cabin and atop....indicates a state of active repair and a period of active maintenance.   This is also evidenced by noting that the *Fish* tackle is present just port and parallel of the main deck house front, indicating it was employed to do some heavy lifting.  Possibly to remove the ladder.

Look into the picture and see what you know should be there...despite the clutter.

Rob,

Honestly, I don't recall seeing a model of a vessel with such consistently, tightly furled sails. Usually yardarms are either completely empty or feature loosely draped sails instead.

Having actually had the distinct pleasure of rolling up genuine thick canvas duct tents with the Boy Scouts in the mid 60s, I can say with some authority that it's no easy task to accomplish. Those iron men on wooden ships knew their stuff.

I agree, personally I have never seen a model with such furled sails……..one reason why I went that way.  Plus the Frisco pic of her depicts her thusly.

Thanks for the super compliments.   It is my way to depict and display ships differently and uniquely.

Rob,

How it didn't register that those white objects on the yardarms were sails is beyond me. Not until you referred to them did it dawn on me that, it's precisely what you identified. Duh...

Enjoying her coming together Rob; a truly splendid model.

cheers

Pat

Thanks a bunch Pat.  Progress comes in waves.  Rigging each yard to the mast has it's own tedium, with its bunt lines, clews, lifts, downhauls and such.  Kinda like their own unique micro projects.

I'll be making only 3 gin blocks for this mast, and those will be a separate project in of themselves.

It's a wonder to think, I'm over 2/3's of the way done with rigging and projecting out...I might be finished with Glory before summers end...or at least by the end of Fall.

What a journey.  I went directly from finishing the Great Republic to Glory.  5 years to finish the GR and now over 2 years into Glory.  Somebody has time on their hands.

Rob,

I originally thought when you said you were going to rig her with sails, that only the lower ones would be furled. Not until you referred to your intention to duplicate the appearance of the ship docked in S.F. 1877 that I took another look at that image and then voila! there they were all along.
