But only if you don’t want the public to fall over the side 😂 who said this model is easy 😳 when I tried the Pinnace in position, guess what was in the way, Yip one hard worked handrail, oh dearie me, or something like that, lying again, well that got confined to the scrapyard.

The colour chart in model box shows the 50ft Pinnace does actually sit onto the boat deck as shown, it’s easy to do corrections when you can see what it is you are aiming at. 🙄  Another photo of how the foremast is progressing, just getting ready to mask up for painting, hopefully things start moving in the RIGHT direction now. 🤞

Xmas eve not best time to do this guys, hiding from Jacqueline just now 😂 just a quick post to show that I’m still trying to finish this model 👍 since I purchased the Micro Masters ships boats and other parts guess what, you got it I have to change my model again 🙄 sure I have built this model three times now 🤪. The boats mainly have three cradle frames per boat, sure this has to be correct so have to accommodate supporting these, so my solution works and helps with the rigging on funnel stays. May not be correct but it works for my model, also changed my rigging on funnels, changed for a lighter Lycra, now have 1/32 1/48 1/72 rigging for aircraft, using 1/48 for funnels and 1/32 for main mast stays. Got to go for my tea now, shall post some photos after I have been fed. 👍

Hope everyone had a nice Xmas and have best health and happiness for this New Year. 🤛 Before I broke Of for my holidays I was hoping to get to a certain stage with the Mikasa during the holidays and actually achieved my coal, being the fitting of fore mast and some rigging 👍  This is my carrot and stick approach to this build, carrot being a new part of build and new appearance to model, stick being I’ve got to do it all again with the main mast 😳 OMG, love ship models, but sometimes it becomes so repetitive 🙄  Your always having to think what needs completing before you add your next part of build, in my case that would be the extra steelwork for supporting ships boats and completing the rigging on funnels before fitting the fore mast in place, you don’t want to be doing unnecessary work around a delicate mast for obvious reasons. Show some photos now of that job done. 👍

Put some photos up with rigging on the Pontos masts, definitely better building separately from ship, painting and rigging as much as poss, not a five minute job so that means it took me weeks 😂 Had to make a lot of alterations for my model to install forward jib to this mast and alter the height and length of mast spars, again all this I did by looking at old period photos and making my best guesses, quite happy though, looks reasonable close me thinks.  Put some photos up now.

Glued the mast in position using Gorilla Super Glue, gives you 10 to 45 seconds before bonding it says on instructions, so I double check the fit before applying the glue to mast then quickly lined up and inserted into deck, in ten seconds it was just about solid, about had kittens, but got away with it. At least I know what to expect when I come to do the main mast. 😂 And by the way it’s solid.

On the rigging side of things, the best chance of getting a likeness is by looking at lots of the old photos of the ship, wouldn’t go to much by what she is today at museum, just my opinion. Old photos don’t lie. But you do have to look and study them for a while, I’ve corrected my attempts more than a few times. Next photo made my mind up on this, must be an early one of the preserved ship. 🤞

Once cutting this part from the part for my upper rigging like so, I then split the bottom eyelet so I could attach this to deck fixing. The other end on the Lycra shall attach  another piece of etch with open hook  once you sort out what length you want the Lycra to be, ie leaving it shorter to stretch it onto attachment point, it works surprisingly well. 👍A646AB66-6CF0-4315-9378-CFBFD1BA5C78.thumb.jpeg.9911696957314825984b19c1cc5d87f1.jpeg1357EA04-2713-48AF-859E-A9AF0D168EBD.thumb.jpeg.dc99547fb5530da63ec8b588da90622f.jpeg7AF4F901-E7AD-432C-90FA-BE12C131C047.thumb.jpeg.085d1ac56419c74c169492f07368d3a5.jpegC0B398A8-26DF-4F05-98BD-DCFAF2F382DA.thumb.jpeg.7e3619deab24db7abeca4e71532f4d07.jpeg05B69625-3B75-4067-8A5C-66028ECBC913.thumb.jpeg.402d867b454cf68855d6aeca9cd34d8c.jpeg

You then ease this part onto the deck attachment and lightly glue with thin supper glue, then stretch The Lycra and hook up other end. 👍

Uh-huh. Easy enough to write, probably harder to do. My hat's off to you!

Hi Jeff, your Mikasa is looking fantastic.  That's a really great idea for the rigging turnbuckles!

Cheers

Thanks Chris, but honestly it’s not that difficult and looks the part, difficult, the Pontos funnel caps and supports for end of bridge wings, I’m sure all the people who have built Mikasa will agree, she does come with some challenges 😂 but again thanks. 🤛

Thanks for the compliment, hope this works for anyone else trying it. 👍 was just a rush of blood to the head. 😂 So made a start to main mast today, show how I did alterations. 🤛

Quick post showing progress on main mast guy’s, I lengthened the main spar same size as spar on forward mast, no guarantee that this size is right, just a guess, I went for 110mm 🤞 so cut both spars on pencil mark using a fine hand saw, then made sure end was square using emery stick, then glued together.

The extra ring collar I used to add a bit strength, removing all but one attachment point and bending this one to 90 degrees slightly further out just to try and give a better fixing, then carefully glue this with thin supper glue working around the mast, fixing it as l went. You can see were I bent the fixing point on the collar in the previous photo 👍 once the glue had time to set I fitted the spar into place and proceeded to glue this as well, taking care to get it true and square in both planes. Next job shall be to fit extra ladder rungs so the guys can actually get up to the platform above. 😂

You can see that the first two rungs are turned on the mast to line up between the rigging eyelets, also trying to keep the rung spacing the same, again a tiny amount of thin supper glue is the goal here, sometimes this is not easy. Best approach is go really slow 👍
