I have problems with streaks of ca residue between the mahogany hull planking of my Amati endeavour.  I thought I’d been relatively light handed with it but after sanding there are unsightly thin white streaks between planks.  I’d hoped that I’d finish her with the mahogany varnished but wouldn’t be happy as she looks currently.  Does anyone know whether this excess ca residue can be removed without lifting the planks?  Might they be less visible when varnished?

Have you tried wiping with acetone?

You might need to put some cloth on a thin blade of some sort, saturate it with acetone and  wipe between the planks.

Luck is just another word for good preparation.

Just a note, it may take several swipes with the acetone.  The cured CA is essentially plastic, and the acetone dissolves it.

Master modeler Steve Wheeler used thin C/A on bare wood and never worried about the C/A marks as he applied Floquil's F110015 Flat Finish Matte (the jar is also marked as enamel) as an over spray and the C/A marks disappear completely.  Steve showed before and after photographs in several articles he wrote for both Ships in Scale magazine and the nautical Research journal.  He only ever used this particular product and it is no longer made but any petroleum based clear should work - acrylics were tested and don't work.  The marks were made with thin C/A and no build up of C/A - the thin soaked in completely.  I saw his work under construction with all the glue marks and after so I have seen the proof first hand.

I have the testing of other flat finishes over C/A glue on my list of things to do - but I think it is something that somebody should look into.

Just to add... Shellac will cover the wood and hide the CA glue completely. I used it recently on a build that used CA glue exclusively.

You cannot tell once the Shellac is applied:
