Glory of the Seas 1869 by Vladimir_Wairoa - FINISHED - 1:72 - medium clipper

Recommended Posts

Hello, Some update here.

Basically, after tremendous work , body od the ship IS practically finished with Minor work to do finishing planking stern counter. I must say it was really challenging journey for me,  i wouldnt complete IT as my first or second model no Chance. I must say im so Happy i didnt use any  tool for bending - was not necessary! Fór the way i did IT. At  this point glory profile  IS finished Up to the monkey rail....m id like to stress few adjustments. I widened fcastle and poop rail Columns for simple reason - topgallant cover must sit on something thicker than or 1.5 milimeter surface.

I plan to start with decorative moldings tomorrow so hopefully there Will be a lot to commemt ( gopefully not swear :) anyway i plan to use Also miniatures molding on fancy rail for same very reason - widen surface to sit the  top on IT...I made little sanding toop to sand famous 8 planks Strike :) IT Worked.

Sheer profile from inner side already decorated. I know i know that pattern. I Will try better....anyway, i ditched idea of expensive boxwood. IT Will be painted so Well Worked like Wood makes almost same output with fraction of cost...

Fingers crossed as adding pirails main rail and monkey from the innner side.

Few pics from now. V.

Oh as you Can see i practically almost destroyed bowsprit at this point - Will have to repair IT. No Chance i could work on stand. I have to hold the Boat many times , turn IT vigorously when sanding i coundnt work otherwise. :) and sometimes crash IT....

This IS how IT Will be..

So many gaps to fill around Columns...its already line upon line ..but IT looks quite a lot real to me. I Made main rail mold scraping  pattern ...thick and thin strakes...

Main rail and thinmer pinrail below attached. Im trying smallish molding on monkey rail how IT Will look like. Not sure...looking from above when top cover Will be added there wont be visible a tímy bit on topgallant rail but from deck perspektíve pretty much .....what you think? V.

Complete look  Up from waterways, sheerline, big Columns,  pinrail,  main rail, fancy rail and cover....without fancy rail inlays and upper cover decoration on mold. Layerv upon layer..

Ať this point i start thinking She was overdecorated. Nope,

Ohh i love it. Starting fancy rail inner decoration...

That's looking magnificent Vlad.  Your trim work is well done.   I bet you are getting exhausted with the sanding that is required.

Sweet...just sweet.

Yes...it is always a challenge for the modeler(Namely myself) to forgo details that at a certain scale would either be impossible or impractical.

Nothing worse then adding a detail that is out of scale.  However..in some cases it is possible to get away with it, because you can mask the error either in quantity or by way of simple communal acceptability.  A good example is fudging with copper plate scale for your model.

Personally I expect to attempt to replicate the cabin moldings and box work as authentic as possible....and if not, I will employ the skill of illusion and mimicry.   My coat of arms.😄

Rob, there's a noble history of highly appreciated art trickery "T'Rompe L'Oyle" literally meaning "trick the eye". I actually enjoy well employed 3D fakery, such as you see in nature dioramas where it's challenging to determine where the material foreground ends and a cleverly mimicking painting begins.

Vladimi are you sure you're not slipping in some work being done on an actual ship just to fill in your progress on this model? 😉 Wow the detail work is amazing. It will look even more so when you finally add the t'gallant Rail which we all now know is solid.

In model railroading it's called *Forced Perspective*.

How did i make grooves.

I must say i still somehow struggle with molding grooves. Finally i think i found a way that satisfyingly brings baswood almost to 95 percent od boxwood with no fuzzies. Well IT Will never match IT but....

How did i go.

1. Slight TRIM of edges with 270 grit.

2. Thin line with scraper.

3. Widenijg line with thicker point of scraper.

4. I Made sharpened Stick of hard Wood but blanded tip of IT. I run IT as last and here are the pics. Those are pretty macro so by eyesight there IS basically no fuzz.

I mušt check how others do IT but fór the moment im Happy.

There IS one smaller 1/3 grooves and one 2/3 fór the glory sheer.

Vlad....your results are wonderful...you have been able to successfully create very convincing and accurate moldings and they look amazing on the ship.

Just a great job......Congrats.

I was wondering when you were gonna get to adding the top rail trim that runs along to the top of the bowsprit.  Sweet work.

The topgallent or monkey rail is  solid...boarded on its internal side...yours is still open to the framing....is that an oversight or how you interpret it?

Rob, frankly, im not really sure what solid monkey rail means. I had really though  tíme to think Bulwark and Columns sizes with calculating space for rails as i almost so so reached top of bowsprit and little above. This monkey rail IS tad little Higher at stern side a little narrower ať how. Just to fit in nameboard. but finally im Happy overal. IT was really challenging as i had to Keep sheer angle always samé as buidling Up from IT ....there still IS plenty to revise as navalhood plate goes under molding so i Will have to repair that part - i just forgot , but i want to finish this All procedúre in one to and have long long deserved break before i paint. :) V.  Also there get s one " mistake" to fall IT such- you figured probably that main rial should be samé thickness more less than sheerline mold but i had to Made IT tad thinner to make monkey rail wide enough and to Keep rest in good corelation sizewise....

Not to throw fuel on the fire,  but how will you fade the plank sheet into the top molding of the naval hood…….they are one in the same….?

Sorry,  but I noticed this a little while ago.   I’m sure you have an ingenious plan in store to show off your awesome wood working skills

Oh….glad to hear.   I always understood,  Throwing in the Towel to mean your giving up, on carving the figurehead.  Can’t wait to see what you have in store next.

Vladimir, if it helps, I can do sketches of Glory's Figurehead at the 1 1/4" scale you need. Another modeler, first name Doris works with material called 'plasticine' which she sculpts into incredibly lifelike figures that she uses to populate her vessels made of card. One of her latest creations is "Royal Caroline."

Hey Vlad..one other thing I noticed on your bowsprit.  I believe you said you are going to rebuilt it...well, I suggest you correct the sprit CAP.  It is not vertical as some caps are.  If you look at the pic of Glory at pier side, during her conversion....draw several lines out from the main mast toward the sprit cap.  Make those lines the same length...then draw a line vertical down at their edges(Just a grid).  You will see that the sprit cap is NOT vertical but leans back and is actually at a right angle to the sprit and jibboom.  Some photos give the illusion it is vertical.

I noticed this when you made the original bowsprit, but failed to mention it.  Sorry.

Vlad, not to 'pile on' but Rob is right. All iron bands and sprit cap are at 90 degrees to the bowsprit and jibboom.
