USF Constitution by cookster - Model Shipways - kitbashed to 1812

OK, I think you're asking a couple different things...

"why put a wipe on poly on before painting"

In my case I'm painting over the black dye.  I don't think the paint directly on top of the dye is a good idea, so I will cover the dye with wipe on poly, then paint the white stripe.  I can also sand between coats of poly and really get things smooth.  The white paint at that point would be the last step - finish wise.  It does remain to be seen however how the white will cover over the black.  I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the worse.

I'm thinking ahead to painting the outside of my Constitution cross section and was planning on just priming the wood before painting, probably acrylic paint, many coats

Yes, this is the method many others, including Chuck, uses.  I just don't have the patience to put on 20 water thin coats of paint.  I've painted cars and finished furniture off and on for 30 yrs and and i can't wrap my head around that method - although I do understand it.  The purpose of putting the poly on before the paint would be to seal the wood, and sand between coats to get things good and smooth.  Basswood is very soft and will soak  up a lot of paint, or any finish for that matter.  Primer would probably work, although depending on what type of primer you might need to thin it down a lot to keep from burying all the fine details under thick primer.  And don't forget to sand between coats.

Good luck and hope I answered your questions!

Just checked in Wes and you've got some lovely work going on here.

I cant believe your going to paint that great planking. Seems such a shame.

Mobbsie, Conny wouldn't look right to me without the black hull.  And it's basswood, not the prettiest wood with a clear finish.  With my perfectionist nature I'd look at that natural basswood hull and never be happy....  I am going to plank the deck with boxwood i got from Jeff at Hobbymill, so THAT should be pretty with a clear finish!  Thanks for checking in!

Hey, I'm a sub Lieutenant!

Not much to report other that more planking.  I finally got tired of it and decided to work on the deck, fitting masts etc.  Thought I'd snap a couple pic while she's sitting in drydock on the bench.  That odd bend at the first upper gunport is some kind of optical illusion, it doesn't actually look like that.

Your planks look excellent! My version has me planking before I mount the stem. I'm not sure how I can get that crisp look you have that way. Oh well, I'll figure it out.

Thanks Augie, your Confed is coming along quickly.  I had visions of starting mine and trying to keep pace with you - but not now!

Rich, not sure what to tell you about your stem.  I do know mounting the stem first with the rabbet it creates makes a great way to insert the planks at the stem.  The three models I have are all Model Shipways and all share that feature.

Maybe some of our more experienced builders can chime in and help you on that one!

Wes, that's beautiful. It brings back memories when I was at that stage (only mine didn't look nearly as good).

I think what Rich is referring to is that some manufacturers have you plank the hull to the false keel, then shape a flat on the planking to attach the exposed keel. The MS Connie has you attach the exposed keel to the false keel then cut the rabbet to accept the planking. Either way works (in my book).

Hope that helps.

Thanks,

Harvey

Wes, you're Connie is looking sweet! Are you considering putting in any planking for the sub deck for looking down through the gratings?

Thanks,

Patrick

Patrick, that's a good question I hadn't considered.  I think I'll lay the large mid ship grating in place and see if I can peer down into nothing, then decide.  Thanks for pointing that out!

The planking is looking really sweet, Wes. I couldn't agree with you more about painting basswood. When I want natural wood ,I use boxwood, pear or holly.

Wow, thanks guys!

Bob, coming from you that means a lot!

Evan, I've followed you Conny build and the detailed info you've provided.  It's been very helpful.  When I start work again on my 1812ish transom, your one of the guys I hope will like my approach.

Pygo, thanks so much!

With planking temporarily put on hold to save my sanity, I moved to deck furniture.

Finally get to use some pear wood, very nice stuff!!

This is the first hatch cover, they"re all built basically the same as far as methods...  I cut the half lap joints with my 10" table saw.  Overkill?  Yes, but I don't have a Jim Saw yet and I do love my power tools....  Once the half laps were cut I cut each piece to length (a little long) with a hobby miter box.  Then I assembled the boxes and trimmed the excess with a knife blade, and added the support pieces on the inside for the grate.  I still have to attach the small trim piece on each side.  Will post pics of that when finished.

Thanks Augie and Geoff!

Hardwood is definitely the way to go, and the swiss pear has a wonderful color.

I never would've known about Jeff @ Hobbymill, or considered milling my own model ship lumber one day without MSW!!

Thanks MSW!!

OK, got the first coaming done.  (thanks to Lambsbk for reminding me of my ship's terminology!)

I was worried about making these little rascals but this one really weren't that bad!

Anyway, I added the trim pieces ran long to come back and trim down later.

Laid down some boxwood planking to see how the finished install will look, and of course couldn't resist setting in it's future home...

I planked and varnished my below decks even though I'm not sure anyone will ever see them when they look down the grates. I asked that same question when my plans called for me to plank these hidden decks. I think it was Augie or Sjors who said, "You'll know they're planked even though you can't see them." Well, mine are done. It didn't take that long.

Wes, the grating looks great. I think I will be getting some additional lumber when I get started on my Connie too. The pear and boxwood that you have looks fantastic.

Thanks,
