Responding and having the person's name (link) in green cartouche

I've seen this done on posts where someone has responded to say "bob" and "bob's" name shows up in green cartouche containing a link to their profile.   How is this done?

Type the @ sign immediately followed by their forum name. As you type, a list of members should come up matching the letters until you see the one you want. Click on it and youre done: @mtaylor

It works in various scenarios.

I use it to often to say thankyou for a delivery sent by post etc, say a parcel from tom at Caf @cafmodel where i have no post to quote

I noticed that also but wasn't sure it was reason.
