Hello all.

This is my Build log of Artesania Latina's HMS Surprise in 1/48

This kit is big. 1334 mm long.

I started this after bagging my previous Sovereign of the Seas project, which was a real disappointment for me.

So far, I've put more hours in this project in a day, than what I put in the SotS in a week.

Here is my start.

Technical data of the kit:

The instructions manual. 117 pages in seven languages, with photos (not drawings) of the actual build, and very detailed:

Example of the plans in 1/1 scale relative to the kit, printed in full color and in heavy gloss paper:

False keel and frames already fitted and glued:

Lower false deck in place. Done after a lot of nailing, gluing and of course, cursing. :)

False lower deck ready for planking. For this I am going to use this article by a fellow modeler member related to deck planking and different plank patterns ;)

Fantastic Ulises!

I'll be following for sure! This one's on my bench waiting on me to finish the Endurance by Occre!

Update that is not an update.

Hello guys. Not sure if I should call this post an update.

These strips were cut to length, stained and put to dry to be used later as first deck planks:

After doing the caulk simulation process, I just didn't like the outcome, so I decided to do it all over again, and ordered some new planks from Joe Volpe at Modelers Sawmill (See Home page.)

Obviously that will take some time to arrive. (BTW kudos to Joe Volpe for an outstanding attention to detail and client needs).

So while waiting for my planks to arrive, I filled the middle gap in the false deck boards:

and proceeded to round the corners of the frames so that the planks will lie flat over them.

So that's it. Sorry to dissapoint. Not much of an update, is it?

It will get better as soon as Joe sends my order :)

Best regards.

Update Feb 19 2022

As I mentioned previously, I messed up the kit's lower deck planks when weathering and adding caulk simulation to the edges. So I ordered some new planks from Modelers Sawmill. They got delayed in the mail, I think due to some heavy weather conditions.

Anyway, when they finally arrived I proceeded to weathering again by submerging random batches of already cut planks in water with diluted shoe polish liquid in several ratios to achieve staining the planks so they look sort of individual planks.

So the end result was this. Before you say anything, this is NOT the final look of the planking job.

I cannot say I liked this very much... too much contrast. So I sanded the whole surface, and applied tint again.

It ended up being too dark. (Sorry no photo of this)

I did a rub with thinner and a rag, and finally I got this look... I am not 100% satisfied, but considering only a small portion of this deck will be seen after placing the upper main deck, I decided to leave it as is, and use the learning experience when doing the main upper deck.

Thanks for watching, folks!

Long overdue update.

I am not working as fast as I would like. I'm investing much time trying to recover my lost fingerpicking guitar skills, after some fingers surgeries; bought me a new motorcycle; and other assorted stuff.

Anyway, here it is. I finished planking the upper part of the hull with 2mm x 5mm planks. After a lot of sanding I did not like the end result very much. So I decided to buy some .5 mm planks from Modeller's Sawmill (excellent product and service by Joe Volpe, btw) and do a second planking. I cut the planks in half to have a more accurate planks length, and proceeded to paint al four sides with spray black paint. I will start the second planking job tomorrow, and will post the resultas asap. Thank you all.

Having the gunport stops (linings) set in before the second layer of planking looks like it assures the outboard edges are even and a great idea for double planked models.   For the future, keep in mind there was no lining piece on the top of the port attached to the upper sill, only the side stops and the bottom one resting on the lower sill.   I looked at a good number of photos of contemporary models and could not find any with stops on the upper sills.  There is a very detailed explanation on these in volume II of David Antscherl's The Fully Framed Model
