Good afternoon! My name is Lars. I'm a second year mechanical engineering student at university and I've been building plastic ship models for around two years now, so very early into my career. Thanks guys and gals for letting me join y'all! I typically like to try to achieve hyper-realism with my models and could definitely use some advice so feel free to message me! Thanks a bunch!

Welcome to MSW, Lars.   I suggest you have a look in the kit area.  There's some great builds in the  1901-Present area with detailing and weathering.   Also, if there's a particular model ship you're working on, use the Search (upper right hand side) to search for logs.  There's also a  pinned topic in the kit area with links (https://modelshipworld.com/forum/150-index-of-all-kits-by-brand-and-subject/)

And start a log on your project.  It's a great way to get advice, help, and also meet other builders.

For finished ships, put the photos in the gallery.

Hello Lars,

Nice to see another "young'un" on MSW. I'm in grad school for engineering, so not much older than you, and decided to build the Amati HMS Fly kit as my first ever model (plastic or wood).

My advice to you is: certainly don't bite off more than you can chew, but also pick a subject that genuinely captures your interest. Wooden ships take a long time to build, so it's important to stay passionate about what you're making. I also think the ideal difficulty for a kit is something just a little above your skill level, otherwise you won't learn anything!
