Name the Ship Game

RMS Olympic

Recommended Posts

I'm also confused because she looks like a ship built into Charles 2nd reign, yet she is different from the known portraits of the Royal Charles former Naseby. The rake of the taffrail is smaller and instead of the big decoration which is now at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (thank you for posting that, Jan!) there is a row of windows. So she cannot be the former Naseby.

Perhaps she is the SECOND Royal Charles, a 100 gun launched in 1673, renamed Queen in 1693, rebuilt in 1715 and renamed Royal George, again rebuilt in 1756, renamed Royal Anne this time, and broken up in 1767.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Royal_Charles

So, she must be the Royal Charles of 1673; of course, here in the first likeness, or maybe the second, being renamed Queen. Anyway, it's sporting the English ensign, so at least it is before 1707 when Union Jack became the regular ensign. Am I correct?

What do you mean by 'partly correct'?

Do you mean this is one of the two names she had, or.....

Jan

For clarification, the "Royal" part of Royal Charles is correct, the "Charles" part isn't.

Her other name was made very famous about 100 years later by a ship of the same name.

Royal James is correct, Jason.

A 100 gun first rate, she was launched in 1675. Renamed Victory in 1691 at the decommissioning of the old second rate Victory of 1666. Extensively rebuilt in 1694/95. The image I posted documents her appearance after the rebuild. I overlooked her third name.of Royal George in 1714/15. She was nearly destroyed during another rebuild when fires to burn off the accumulated marine growth got out of control and nearly destroyed her in 1721. Although funded as a rebuild, the next Victory of 1737 used so little of the remains that it's considered a different ship. The Victory we all know was launched in 1765.

Your turn, Jason.

Wow...I seem to have thrown a wet blanket on this game.  I'm wary of giving any clues without giving it away, but looking at the picture there are some inconsistencies that should put you on the right track.   Lastly, its not anything to do with Arclow or Euphrates if that helps :-)

Cheers,

Jason

Hi again Jason,  Hmmm not the Arklow 'Something' then eh? damn I'm out of ideas so....

Not by any chance 'Old Ironsides' ? just a shot in the dark.. based on absolutely no research at all...

Not Old Ironsides and not Royal Charles...I could say partially correct based on the fact that some of the letters used are the same, but I won't :)

Charles W Morgan perchance? just a guess based on a little more research :) those 'topped' yards look familiar!

Eamonn

Also the 'Charles' came from Jan's post above, which made me think, though I suspect he may actually have it, if Charles W is correct :)

You got her Eamonn, she is indeed the Charles W Morgan - told you it was pretty easy :-) . The whites stripe is misleading but this is how she looked when moving to Mystic in early 1941.  I thought the davits and lack of a topmast would have given it away though.

Over to you Eamonn.

Thanks Jason.. though I kinda feel Jan had her but didn't say so.. if you follow me, especially when he said 'Royal Charles' was partially correct at the last one..! it was that that made me think of the Morgan :)

Will post another photo shortly.. tis tea time over here (and it will take some time to find an Arklow Whaler !!! :) )

Hi folks,

BTW I did find an 'Arklow Whaling' vessel (of sorts), 2 in fact.. they were both regular cargo schooners which were used in the Moby Dick film from the '50's, but I thought they would be way toooo nasty/obscure/difficult to post as questions, and I'd run the risk of being hated on MSW :) So I decided to play nice..

These images are all examples of the same TYPE of boat, your mission this time is to simply name what that TYPE actually is! (They actually have a specific name! and sorry but 'Gaff Cutter' is not the answer I'm chasing, you'll have to work a little bit harder than that  :) )

Eamonn

I think there is enough information there to be getting on with..

Hmmmm... I'm thinking the HMS in the title is a red herring.  Looks to be a frigate or a wannabee frigate.  US possibly?

Well done Menno.. Galway Hooker is right, though for pleasing 'lines' I personally prefer the Kinsale Hooker, a little less 'sturdy' looking!

Emmmmm.. does anybody know what Mark is on about a few posts up? :) (I think he must be answering the previous question, cos I don't think you could confuse a Galway Hooker with a Frigate. maybe if you really squint up your eyes  :) :) )

Over to you Menno..

Eamonn

Sorry Mark, was just kiddin, hope you didn't mind.

EDIT.. Jan, the Bristol Channel Cutter are beautiful boats but a fair bit larger I think.

Eamonn,

Sorry, I forgot to refresh the page before I posted.  Got taken away for a bit and didn't think...

@ Jan: You are right, some of these 19th century French ships look quite strange with their heavily inwards curved shape and those turreting superstructures. At least this one looks a bit more "normal". Good thinking so far.. you can go further in that same direction!

@Jud: thanks for the imput. Never thought until now how hard it would be to climb on a rope ladder from a swinging boat even in a moderate sea. May be tough!

Also, it may well be that the picture itself is made from the missing boat! So, any more ideas or should I drop in one more clue?
