Black Pearl by Tararasik - Zvezda - 1/72

Today I installed quarterdeck and windows for the cabin. I also noticed a strange behaviour of the paint + primer. I primed whole hull with mr.surfacer and painted with matt Tamiya and it become completely matt. Windows primed with Vallejo and painted with same paint, but they turned out much glossier. It's a bit noticable on the last photo. But I hope it won't be visible after I'll age the hull. I also left one wall not glued so I can see sometimes what captain is doing ))

A lot of work but a small progress. Spent a lot of time on fixing holes after gluing sides together. Still far from perfect but I'll call it a battle wounds ))

- painted the "dirt" on the hull
1942450622_IMG_5621Large.jpeg.0cd7275feb5cd27da2a59da360ce6e0f.jpeg

- painted gallery and all the decorations
1725509440_IMG_5620Large.thumb.jpeg.0d648f5af447e5c2300f9e1699d4c02d.jpeg1416531924_IMG_5623Large.thumb.jpeg.a5826c065533bcea734d601aa7734552.jpeg1751214820_IMG_5618Large.jpeg.dc7ee393b72711b3b5a8c31d43ea08cf.jpeg

- started to age the hull

- installed the rudder

1102852977_IMG_5617Large.thumb.jpeg.e780506a16c35b23eb02fa025051e8ca.jpeg

- started building masts, insert wooden rods inside, also going to remove imitation of "ropes around the mast" and replace them with real ones

477135365_IMG_5585Large.thumb.jpeg.451218803c5fffe4100730589816a5db.jpeg1001523177_IMG_5584Large.thumb.jpeg.aa2ba07b444bf4f21ad4dd5be1db43ff.jpeg

- installed "channels?", had and issue with this small parts which installed to tight and started to crack after I glued them, so have to putty them a lot (
1408514299_IMG_5597Large.jpeg.e34132d5717421e76773aebaa0c227a7.jpeg2092078765_IMG_5619Large.jpeg.f61d7b4e1c9024e6c93aa7e977374fd2.jpeg

- and the most interesting part is guns. Decided to reuse plastic "blocks" but replace plastic tackles with ropes and added breeching
69616636_IMG_5628Large.jpeg.600bb5e42566eba03d4d280e197711cb.jpeg592319432_IMG_5630Large.thumb.jpeg.0d91de9244b13da017311aff3cae10f1.jpeg1051383459_IMG_5632Large.thumb.jpeg.7417e1447f88fdecda65c58bce402ac0.jpeg1131386827_IMG_5629Large.jpeg.38be2f281634beb54de0abfb76c6f078.jpeg

And have two questions

1. Are these parts are useful or it's better to remove them?
2058325953_IMG_5631Large.thumb.jpeg.41b5469ab5673d15309474aecdc33ed5.jpeg

2. When the cannon is in ready to fight position, the breeching is not tight to stop the recoil, but as I understand, the gun tackles are tight, because they pulled the cannon. So after the shot and recoil breeching becomes tight, but what happens to the tackles, are they manage to stretch by themselves?

'Looks like after the blocks and tackle are used to run out the gun, they are not made fast - and the line is left loose on either side.  When fired, the recoil is slowed (energy absorbed) by the loose line racing through those pulleys as the distance between them (under strain) increases ... sort-of like "brakes".  Then the remaining force is checked when the thick line goes taut.  This constitutes a recoil 'system'.

Completed builds:  Khufu Solar Barge - 1:72 Woody Joe

Current project(s): Gorch Fock restoration 1:100, Billing Wasa (bust) - 1:100 Billings, Great Harry (bust) 1:88 ex. Sergal 1:65

Today I spent a lot of time with the guns, they will be more visible so I tried to clean them properly, and it was a loooot of sanding. I decided to remove those hooks from the carriages.

image.jpeg.024c5e6899750df36492bc9db77d8e11.jpeg

Then I added water streaks, not as neat as I imagine but still I like it. And check how the masts will look.

And one more cool update - I have a new lamp, it's big, very bright and there almost no shadow, I'm super happy.

A bit of a progress. Painted gun ports and started to install.

25951087_IMG_5681Medium.jpeg.5dcb71842b25ca2dd34f5cbb5e1886f3.jpeg1919403303_IMG_5689Medium.jpeg.9385ab90b48204a6b2efe0b20613fe25.jpeg

Then I remembered that I can make a proper rope and tried to install one. What do you think, is it much better to replace all the port ropes?

Left is "proper" rope, right is from the kit.

452979828_IMG_5712Medium.jpeg.2e3ddc10f41395b0872e83779612371f.jpeg71621849_IMG_5713Medium.jpeg.11736504c7126cab2d3860803f407d77.jpeg

Painted all guns into black

image.jpeg.00150fe44d5bf85d6f9b0a32aea54de1.jpeg

Made a jig for breeching and installed one on the gun.

2086525500_IMG_5697Medium.jpeg.b16db3bdeb6a96960252d0c2a4841360.jpeg1192255703_IMG_5698Medium.jpeg.86cf36d1ffcad903ba73b73a5390a067.jpeg216110761_IMG_5699Medium.jpeg.eaa2b9993b37722affac7ecd67f8ea6a.jpeg

Now the hard part, I tried to install first gun on the deck and it's soooo hard. The place is in the corner near the captain cabin so it's very inconvenient, but still I was very frustrated. So I left it on the half way and will continue tomorrow.

It is challenging and can be time consuming to make your own parts, but in the end, it can give you a very good feeling and help to drive interest to keep plugging forward.  Your staircases look very good!

Thanks for the kind words, it helps me a lot. In this particular case, the result worth the effort. But I still felt like totally exhausted when I finished it. There should be additional pillars, but I'm not ready to make them, so I just leave as it is. I guess it's the last big improvement on this ship ))
Meanwhile I primed staircases and railings for the stairs to the lower deck, I'm going to make them with ropes.

Maybe you know what are these rods in the masts? I can't find them nether in instruction nor in the books.

image.jpeg.02d02d33173326bc7acf6ee49f816041.jpeg

I have not built that particular kit, but those look suspiciously like “pins” that would have corresponding holes on the spars that will likely be glued to the masts at some point.  Try dry fitting the spars to the masts and see if they have matching pins/holes.

Thank you, you absolutely right. I thoroughly read the instruction and found this. But I still will remove those pins as I'm not sure that I'll use spars from the kit.

Time has come and I finally have to finish cannons. So I started with blocks, drilled the holes and cut off plastic tackles. Made a necklace to paint.

1601997369_IMG_5779Medium.jpeg.a4558f258f3b0dbc20455bfdfa8ffd1b.jpeg451213205_IMG_5780Medium.jpeg.5a00deed0c9b55f6f54a3e8a47b4de5e.jpeg1768923470_IMG_5781Medium.jpeg.0de7b9f454382c784bdb8e7ed6ec1f93.jpeg1528073729_IMG_5783Medium.jpeg.f3bcb0f84501e0a9cfb67d8e3cf98b36.jpeg

To make rings I came up with such idea. Pinned small nails without caps, wrap the wire around, shape a bit with a tweezer and cut it with a knife. I made 50 rings in a half an hour.

1221431628_IMG_5785Medium.jpeg.df98db5e73471b51e00da2691832c112.jpeg1493885400_IMG_5792Medium.jpeg.64de26c905495c86106858ab09190e58.jpeg1707740839_IMG_5788Medium.jpeg.78ae6aea053c979e1cff03dc2eb10902.jpeg518182908_IMG_5794Medium.jpeg.64e6e33aaab58dd952b7eaacb8f04458.jpeg

And breeching. I didn't make the seizings, as it wouldn't be visible but very time consuming. Just glued the end of the rope around the ring. Then made a loop to put it on the cannon.

I love guns on the ship, but already hate to build them )
Today I installed all the breeching and painted blocks. I almost see the end of this.

I also think about imitation of cannon fire, something like this, what do you think?

Today was another fight and I won ))) First two cannons and I assume they were hardest to install in that limited space. But I'm pretty happy with the result, at least visible part of the result )

I also made the rope railings

674734305_IMG_5830Medium.jpeg.817787d95ba247848bedeb733b4e2b54.jpeg

Next I'm going to glue stairs and capstan, I guess they are the last parts on the deck, and cover all the deck and hull with matt varnish. Then install all the cannons and continue with the masts.

To rest a bit from the ship I found an old model that I started 8 years ago and decided to finish it.

image.jpeg.c12335b23d5df484879618c930597cdc.jpeg

And back to business. This is how fully "rigged" cannon looks.

581502058_IMG_5867Medium.jpeg.b74833e0eae2676e663ee74852f8cef4.jpeg2039803503_IMG_5868Medium.jpeg.e256019359cd2287e0ca4187e6f814a4.jpeg

And the deck with all the guns.

image.jpeg.296aa77283429f3dbd5647d718876d98.jpeg

It was a mistake to install railings before cannons as I broke them couple times (

Ok, I finally did it - all the cannons. I'm not completely satisfied with the result, but in general they look good. It was a nightmare to work with ropes and superglue. It sticks to everything but the ropes )) And it leaves white spots. Is there anything better to use?

So here is what I have at the moment.

This is my rope factory )
1516702323_IMG_5891Medium.jpeg.7ce2afe4ddb3537acffc1f8f65869a8d.jpeg

And this is how full rigged cannons look.

To reward myself after this, I made my first proper rigging - gammoning of the bowsprit. It was a pleasure to work with and the result is very satisfying.

621712777_IMG_5894Medium.jpeg.bdc7548055e3d190e802a9ce63bbff2e.jpeg796961665_IMG_5895Medium.jpeg.2f59d9a368f41260ed5ff90f0c94d8fe.jpeg

Then installed decorations around it.

733432387_IMG_5896Medium.jpeg.7d125bd1bcb1ba121e3b25d010035c23.jpeg330164777_IMG_5914Medium.jpeg.50a4773f2d0fdbef112668324e00c935.jpeg

Tried my modern lifeboat, but it didn't fit so I'll proceed with the old-school one :) I'm not sure what is the proper way to tie it up, can you suggest?

816443252_IMG_5898Medium.jpeg.46165a7ef33dc82bcbb7ec06811b6406.jpeg1530901042_IMG_5909Medium.jpeg.f77ed09cd849bd9209c99c966cb21f87.jpeg

Decided to improve it a bit and made a sail on the spar.

1916087563_IMG_5907Medium.jpeg.16d8c13416c56128e250cf1aa6f3eb4d.jpeg

As my deck part is almost finished, I also want to add some stuff on it. At the moment I have couple of barrels. But it still looks empty, especially the poop deck. What can I add more? Maybe some boxes, buckets, some ropes. I would appreciate if you can give me some references.

Looking excellent,   with  the spars   if you could  make them from wood dowels  - it will   save you in the end  as the plastic ones  will  bend/break from tthe rigging.
