Hello All, I am starting my third build and my first "plank on". I'm looking forward to this build, but have to admit I'm a bit nervous about the planking part.

I have been spending some time reading over the instructions and looking over the plans. I really want to get a strong start, so that when the planking step comes the planks will fit with minimum issues.

I have cut out and primed the frames. I primed as I have decided to paint the interior instead of staining/varnishing the wood.

I then painted the frames and glued them together. I then started to layout the hull bottom using the plans, a divider and ruler to mark where the frames will go.

Okay, today I checked my (hopefully careful) measurements and glued the frames, stem and transom to the hull bottom. I also made and glued the floor cleats to the bottom, as well.

My next step is to glue the assembly upside down to a board and begin planking.

This morning I turned the build over, glued it to a building board and then heated a wet towel in the microwave, laid it over the hull bottom. I then added weight to either end to help curve the bow and stern down.

Good idea on the wet towel, and I love the pink weights - I have some just like those! 😊

I am currently shaping the last of the planks pairs. I’m a bit nervous how the planking is shaping up. There are a few bulges and the last planks are going to be attached a bit higher than the plans show. I overlapped each plank by 1/16th of an inch, per instructions. As this is my first attempt at planking, I’m not sure what to expect. However, I’m enjoying this build and will keep moving forward and see how it goes.

I’ve been pretty diligently working on my Dory. I finished my planking and trimmed the shear line. I built and installed the center board trunk assembly. I added the rails, added the seat risers and the rudder and tiller. I also built the mast step.

I glued the seats in, but left the forward seat unattached waiting to attach the mast step and step the mast before glueing the seat in place.

I also painted the inside and hull of the Dory. I found a picture on the Internet that I liked and tried to replicate the colors. My hull color came out a bit more blue than I was aiming for, but I like it.

Don’t look too close, as there are a lot of errors 🤔

Now I’m getting ready to work on the mast, boom, sails and rigging.

So, I have cut my sails and waiting for a coat of varnish to dry before sowing the hems and panel lines.

I am a bit disappointed that there wasn’t enough sail cloth provided in the kit to make the main sail given the required hem. Fortunately, I found some similar cloth, albeit a bit thicker in my wife’s sowing stuff.

Sails are finished. The instructions say to use a sewing machine to stitch the hems and panels. I cheated and used my wife and her sewing machine, but they came out very nicely. 😊

Looks great! I’m surprised there wasn’t enough fabric in the kit - I had plenty to spare, so I’m wondering if Bluejacket just made a mistake when they packed your kit.

Thanks Melissa,

I thought it was strange too. No matter how many positions I tried to place the cloth, I couldn’t even cover the main sail! I was pretty upset, as the cost of providing a bit more fabric couldn’t be that much. I’m just glad that we had something similar here to use, so it all worked out.

Okay, I am finished. If you've been following you'll know that this was my first plank on build. This kit was overall a fun build. I believe I learned a lot, as I seem to do with each build. I guess time will tell. I'm not completely happy with the final shape of the hull. I was afraid to sand too vigorously when attempting to fair the hull, as the planks were very thin and I was afraid that I'd sand through them. Ih hind sight, I probably wouldn't have. Anyway, the following images show my result.

Thanks to those who followed.

Hello Paul.  I Just read through your log and congratulations on completing your third model.  It turned out very nicely indeed.  The Swampscott has a beautiful shear line, but the wide planks make it a challenge to fit.  I find that the narrower a boat's planks, even if there are 2 or 3 times as many, the simpler the boat is to build.  Will be watching for your next build - see what Santa brings you.
