HM Bark Endeavour by UdoK - Caldercraft

Recommended Posts

After putting my Bounty build on hold I was looking for a Substitute. I have launched the build about 1 year ago, stopped it to finish with my RC stuff. I assume it is a good time now to continue, even though there are a few builds of the Endeavour going on in the Forum I would like to post my build as well. My plan is to convert the kit to the Details of the AotS book by K.H. Marquardt.

Here is the actual Status on how I pulled the kit off the shelf. Next is to continue the first planking.

Next Planks are prepared, I pull them trough the thickness sander in order to have a equal thickness of the Planks followed by watering and prebending.

Hi Edward

I am building the OcCre version of this lovely ship

I see already that the two kits are very different

It will be very interesting to follow your build

There are several versions of Endeavour being built here so it may be a good idea to follow them for inspiration

I know I am

Good luck with yours

Keep it up  :10_1_10:

Hi Mick,

I had a short a sneak on your build, the kits are quite different indeed. I guess we try to make the best out of it as the result should be more or less the same.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hi all,

planking continues, but while going trough the parts of the kit again I have discovered something strange I didn't realize when opening the kit last year.

The cannon barrels, the ones supplied in the kit are totally oversized. The lenght of them is 45mm, converted to real size at this scale makes something around 3,5 meter.

I can't imagine the Endeavour was equiped with cannons that big.

Is anybody building this kit facing the same Problem?

Hello Edward

Welcome to the Endeavour club, I look forward to watching your progress.

Yes those gun barrels are way too big, the actual 4 pounder guns on Endeavour were 1.82 meters long, so they should be about 30mm long, not 45mm.

Edward

Maybe you should contact Caldercraft (Jokita) and get the barrels replaced. Check the gun carriage parts also to make sure they are the correct size.

Hi Edward,

I think you should contact Jotika as Steve says as they have included the wrong cannon in your kit.  I just measured mine and they are a total of 26mm long and the cascabel is little pointy stubs not the big round ones as per your photo.  (check out the photo of the cannon in my log to see the difference.

The carriage bodies are approximately 17mm long but they come from a sheet of ply containing many parts so they should be alright assuming they supplied the correct sheet.

Cheers

Slog

Thanks Steve, Greg and Slog,

the carriages and swivel guns are fine, the only issue are the barrels. I will replace them later on as I haven't reached the Point to construct the guns yet.

Thank you for your advise, I will check out both of your buildlogs not only for the guns.I'am following your builds already, great stuff.

While waiting on the glue to cure for the first planking I did some scratch build on the main and fore hatch. Size and Position on deck of both of them have been changed according the decklayout of the AoTs. The coamings are made from pearwood, lids are walnut. Both of them have received e finish of two coats of a stuff called Topoil which is originally made to protect wooden kitchen stuff. I like this oil because it darkens the wood a little bit and gives a matt look to the surfaces. The ironworks like rings, hinges and handles will be added at a later stage.

That looks lovely work with some really nice woods

Tell me, are they the woods that came with the kit???

If so I am really jealous

I suppose that OcCre do use lesser quality woods that need a fair bit of work on them to get them anything like

They have to keep their prices at their low level somehow

Carry on with the great work Edward

Thank you Mick,

the coamings for the hatches are constructed from pearwood, not included in the kit. Part of the kit are the walnut strips I have used for the main hatch lids. My CC kit contains limewood strips for first planking and plenty of walnut for second planking and deck furniture. Deckplanking should be constructed from Tanganjika Wood, but I have deceided already not to use this as it has a strong grain. Will probably use maple strips from my stock instead.

Udo

Hi Edward,

want to introduce myself as a big fan of Mr Cook and his Endeavour. I want to build a Endeavour soon, but haven't decided yet what model kit will be best. I assume the Caldercraft will be best after all I have seen - although obviously every kit has its disadvantage (cannons...)

I will forward to follow your log and to learn, see and amire :piratebo5:

Good luck

Hallo Max,

welcome and thank you for stopping by.

My thoughts are the same as yours on the  quality of the kits, there is always plenty of room for improvement on every kit. Personally, I like the CC kits very much as the research on their models seem to be excellent.

I do hope you will make a decision and start a buildlog pretty soon.

Udo

First planking completed! :)

It looks (it is) a bit rough on the Bow and Stern but filler and sanding will do the Job. The missing fore bulwarks will be added after sanding to prevent damage on it.

Will start sanding pretty soon :o

Hi Edward,

You are progressing well.

Have a question regarding the planking at the top rear of the quarter deck next to the stern?  You appear to have a large single sheet of wood? Is this what Caldercraft supply now to do that area as I had to plank mine in the usual way.  I assume you will trim it down in height as from the photos it does appear to be quite high above the rear deck.

Cheers

Hi Slog,

it is not supplied with the kit, I took the 1,5mm basswood Piece from my stock. I find it easier and more solid this way, will do the same on the fore bulwark planking.

You are right, I will trim it to the height of the bulkhead tops after sanding.

The Endeavour continues....

most of the hull sanding has been completed, only a few more spots require some minor filling and sanding

the stempost in just dryfitted so far but will be subject to the next Installation followed by the keel and sternpost.

I'am very happy to have finished the hull fairing orgy.

Hi all, some further Progress.

I did from scrap Wood some framing for the ruder opening and Stern port lids to support the planking around.

Due to a carelessness the stempost felt down from my worktable and the tip of the keel joint broke off (Why does the bread always land on the butterside?)

So I decided to make a all new Backbone from my favourite Wood according the drawings of the AotS book, the Stern post is already done and fitted.

The new stempost is done and installed.

I did it in two pieces as in the AotS but is hard to see in the Pictures, hopefully it comes out better after a surface Treatment later on.

To complete the keel I have to wait for the delievery of more pearwood ordered yesterday.

Meanwhile I will continue with the completion of the upper bulwark planking.

First I want to express my deepest sadness about the Loss of our friend Mick (Micklen32).

As we now all know it wasn't allowed to him to complete his Endeavour build, so I would like to dedicate my build to him!

Rest in peace my friend!

Building goes on..

For the upper bulwark planking I have used again a Piece of a basswood sheet instead of single Planks.

Soaked them in water for half hour and clamped it to the hull.

It's slowly taking shape!

Upper Bulwark planking completed and sanded.

Stern fascia fitted and the area below planked.

For the planking I have used the kit supplied strips, I think it's Manzonia Wood, horrible stuff, very hard and brittle, starts splittering soon after touching.

I will definetly not use this for hull planking.
