I am excited to start with my next project, the planking tutorial. Prior to receiving the kit, I had the manual printed.

IMG_2400.thumb.jpeg.4606985a7819ac535860300606de9eac.jpeg

I am impressed with the kit contents and how it was packaged.

Next I mounted the build sheet, on a piece of 1/2 foam I had as a build board using some spray adhesive.

I need to pick up some markers, and chart tape, but I am eager to get this project moving forward this week.

Good evening,

After a challenging week, I was able to get some modeling done tonight.

First I labeled the parts so that I could remember what is what :)

IMG_2401.thumb.jpeg.09a522188527baee8366ad304187aa91.jpeg

Next I then cut out the keel, keelsom, stern post, fore keelsom, stem, stemson, deadwood and the l-piece from the kit.

IMG_2402.thumb.jpeg.ed667e74403830d2c3039528e9a9bf48.jpeg

I then used some double sided tape to help dry fit the piecesIMG_2403.thumb.jpeg.02895f5f99657f1cfbf885a11eb129b9.jpeg

Next I focused on getting the stemson and stem lined up correctly with a nice joint.

IMG_2404.thumb.jpeg.9fbf3700a8c9ae97d802085bf846cda2.jpeg

I then removed the char from the pieces, to work on the fit. I ended up making a couple sanding sticks after trying to use an old blade to scrap off the char. The results are as follows:

IMG_2405.thumb.jpeg.6bb4e98d598c7cd20713ec10efd40023.jpegIMG_2406.thumb.jpeg.5b3de4d11c9a8731d0609c1bd92a891b.jpegIMG_2407.thumb.jpeg.00fd5df8337b344572d096451244a671.jpegIMG_2408.thumb.jpeg.f4d1fa9477bef3bfb5cd5fdb4700e5f9.jpegIMG_2409.thumb.jpeg.7d7f44bd397cc9dfd870b50deb4bfce4.jpeg

Finally the fit for the stemson to the stem now looks like:

IMG_2410.thumb.jpeg.c69b8eb7fba24442a7e0ffde7d83b95e.jpeg

I continued per the manual with the following items to get a nice fit. I realigned my keelsom to the its matching bulkhead location, and then worked on the fore keelsom to get it to fit. and match its bulkheads.

IMG_2412.thumb.jpeg.9812e6f387d959d673122ad15a76c9fb.jpeg

The final result is IMG_2413.thumb.jpeg.a80a3846159bfd0f59662370ea51d9ea.jpeg

Finally today, I marked out the rabbets. I will let it sit overnight before I make some sawdust and cut them out.

Good afternoon,

I made some progress on my kit today,

First I added the rabbet

IMG_2427.thumb.jpeg.c623f38cdd4e7b0345dc370a961411f1.jpeg

Next, i cut out the 4th and 5th bulkhead so I can get a better visualization of the  the rabbet on the stem, and stemsom.

IMG_2429.thumb.jpeg.b0130f3fd6ac790461cb428043c0a239.jpeg

I  was able to get some good contract with a sample 1/32 piece from my last project.

IMG_2430.thumb.jpeg.020febe642b88aebf418697b20760b1c.jpegIMG_2431.thumb.jpeg.be184b4c5d8bf3e52d3ccca8ef38e197.jpegIMG_2432.thumb.jpeg.f5e39505f1f4f5f444272c2d79fb9980.jpeg

Next I spent some more time deepening the rabbet, and getting the angle right. I also use an eraser to remove some of the pencil marks

IMG_2433.thumb.jpeg.0cc56fd0278304d12e7b1319eaddb7e9.jpeg

IMG_2436.thumb.jpeg.43fea8f6b90226c57271b3bd7fd044c2.jpeg

Hopefully you can see the transition to 90 here in the stem

IMG_2437.thumb.jpeg.f0be22ce7a9a94521b417e8a66cca2a2.jpeg

Finally I started the gluing process

IMG_2438.thumb.jpeg.5bbf0c62166e1058aa5f36b1ce7f1e20.jpegIMG_2439.thumb.jpeg.07f0a1d4f1423d683fe74380fbe5e83c.jpeg

I did break the stem post as I had to move it and it was setting up faster than expected. I noticed my crafting room was 78 :(

I also found that the stem was lifting, so I used a couple or 3x2x1 blocks to hold it down.

Cheers

Good evening. Here is my next update.

Today, I extended the slots on the keelson.IMG_2452.thumb.jpeg.3369fc792b14895b452aefad475974b6.jpeg

Next I glued in the frames in two batches.

Batch 1 -> Frames E, C A, 1, 3

IMG_2454.thumb.jpeg.26b09290143aa7264a9573cbb00767f1.jpeg

Batch 2 -> Frames -> D, B, DF (O), 2, 4

IMG_2456.thumb.jpeg.d82dbfaaa58895d0774076f4363085a3.jpeg

Next I added the fillers, and knocked off some of the char on the bulkheads.

IMG_2457.thumb.jpeg.cd7af220ae957dee6f2eb126c43fe4c6.jpeg

I then marked out the bearding line use frames G and H as guides. I then took a french curve to make the curve.

IMG_2459.thumb.jpeg.309b5099b27aeb1485cb7bc05625cde0.jpeg

Next, I shaped the bearding line by marking 1/32 and then blending in the curve.IMG_2459.thumb.jpeg.309b5099b27aeb1485cb7bc05625cde0.jpeg

Next i extended the rabbet along the keel until the the stern post. This rabbet is 90 degrees.

IMG_2460.thumb.jpeg.2b521234f44193ef616ff1f62d3edeee.jpeg

I then glued in the deadwood, sternpost and L-shaped pieces

IMG_2461.thumb.jpeg.5ad379a857eb54cb03e0139bec5259ca.jpeg

Finally I glued in F and G frames. I initially had H glued in but I was a  little hasty and removed it before it set.

Good morning,

I know it has been a while since I last posted. Real life has gotten in the way.

By November 1, I had completed the following:

I started with finishing adding the supports and the transom. Before adding it, I realized I glued the L-Piece onto the board incorrectly, so I had to pull out the isopropyl out and fix its positioning. I did use a square to line up the transom.

IMG_2475.thumb.jpeg.84925ad2a2442b208f6393ecdc1e46d0.jpeg

For the next few days, I spent some time getting the top line correct. I used chart tape to help visualize the curve. From there I use a square to transfer the line to the bulwarks.

IMG_2476.thumb.jpeg.a3aed2425738a3aa930b18fda8d324dc.jpegIMG_2477.thumb.jpeg.da5384d1646e2340bc81aee095ea9809.jpeg

If you notice, I had to add a shim on 5a and AF. This is because I deepened those connections.

IMG_2478.thumb.jpeg.57b7157bcd0b567e5a5e4a531d5f60e0.jpeg

Overall I am happy with the line.

IMG_2479.thumb.jpeg.a386f55bcd9836d3f62e1a928b7fbb14.jpeg

Last week I broke down and purchased a Dremel.  Thus last night, I finally got back to the project, and I started with shaping the top line. I purposely did not go all the way to my marks, so that I would have some room if necessary after planking to get the curves correct.

Here is the stern section. It will require some more sanding, as there is still a high spot.

IMG_2485.thumb.jpeg.22e49bcac6ceea8370741836c0071a1c.jpeg

The bow also is looking not bad.

IMG_2486.thumb.jpeg.3a14421ec495d0ac93da09c8469c75a3.jpeg

Here is a view of the sanded top line.

IMG_2487.thumb.jpeg.e354afccdc0ba0bd1b5cb49ac5e22dce.jpeg

Finally I started to fair the bulwarks from DF -> AF.

IMG_2488.thumb.jpeg.855c2aa10d2da8327f0d62ff362fa663.jpeg

The curve is starting to take shape and I am getting some good contact with the plank.

IMG_2489.thumb.jpeg.f18d3583a72bbcdb8737c18bb9c65175.jpeg

Frame 4A is still not correct. I may need to add a filler to fix the line a bit.

IMG_2490.thumb.jpeg.067bf69f19c7c0107c8ff644abe1755b.jpeg

Also when I tested the fit along the top line i noticed I had a gap as frame 4 is causing a high spot.

IMG_2492.thumb.jpeg.29a8872202c2f0e0e21f3370a1e99607.jpeg

IMG_2491.thumb.jpeg.69c5ed4e2e709fa7ccbca7e6ebd639f8.jpeg

Overall the fairing is going well. I still need some more work on the bow half of the hull, but I decided to walk away last night as I do not want to rush things.

Though I did notice that my bow rabbet is a little shallow so I will deepen it too.

Cheers

Definitely take time fairing the stern end. Take a look at some of the nice examples to see what it should/could look like and really make sure you can lay planks smoothly. I probably spent 10-20x longer fairing the last inch of the hull than I did the rest of the hull (didn't help that I first did it without the transom and then realized I took too much off some of the frames and had to add wood back). In retrospect, I also had a bit of a discontinuity (elbow) in the bow end that I probably could have seen if I had more patiently dry tested some planks. After now 2 1/2 plankings (well, maybe the Dory only counts 1/4) I'm getting a better sense of what plankings should look like.

@palmerit

I am starting to understand how planking and fairing should be done now. I am really loving my dremel with the wand attachment. I keep it at under 10k in speed and go slow. I am also using a 120 grit sandpaper so that is not that aggressive.

Good evening. A minor update on the planking tutorial.

Today finished fairing the bow portion of the hull. I was able to get a nice curve on the hull.

Here is a photo just about the second strake.

IMG_2500.thumb.jpeg.9468502bdce67d1499b1500eb2b7ba3a.jpeg

This is approximately the second strake.

The garboard

IMG_2502.thumb.jpeg.6b671646060b12d9acf0ee7866a4e5a5.jpeg

Next, I started to tackle the top line in the stern.

You can see I have a low spot on frames E and D.

IMG_2503.thumb.jpeg.02fea89abfe47472b44b5d71155d787d.jpeg

I used thread to give me a nice line along the bulwarks.

IMG_2505.thumb.jpeg.5d20e698df51d3715b68584ba5ccecde.jpeg

More sanding, and I am getting a little closer.

IMG_2506.thumb.jpeg.1ed43fb10365d1f113a346a282730a82.jpeg

The lower top line is starting to curve nicely a little high spot on A.IMG_2508.thumb.jpeg.b458e0e84679142280808260490ea53f.jpeg

IMG_2507.thumb.jpeg.66989f21123946680aeef02b8aaed931.jpeg

After some sanding with a long sanding block I was able smooth out that high spotIMG_2509.thumb.jpeg.fdc1e7188e45ba7b4048dcc757ac2974.jpeg

Here you can still see the low spots on E and D.

IMG_2510.thumb.jpeg.bc1ea19361e4fc3b3bc2212b7aac929e.jpeg

I am pretty close here, I need to thin out G a bit more, and get a nice line. I started to address the the upper part of the top line to blend nicely into the transom.

Good evening a minor update for today.

I did some more fairing of the hull and i focused on the stern. The sample board is fitting nicely.

Good evening.

Tonight I added the counter. I was a little aggressive with the sanding and I added a shim to get a solid connection.  Secondly i mapped out the wale and added a string line to get the bottom into a nice curve.
