Completed the mast. Thankfully had NFL Redzone to watch while sanding. Glad I had my air mask for this sanding using my drill. Also finished the stand.

Oops. I was rounding the boom and the gaff in my drill and was a little too aggressive. These start square, being from a laser cut thick sheet. There’s a couple of precut holes, which in a nice gesture, but it also makes the wood really weak around the hole.

Model Expo has a parts request page to order a replacement part (https://modelexpo-online.com/parts). In addition to ordering a new sheet with the boom and gaff, I also asked for another PE sheet because there weren’t enough long pieces for the pintles.

Shaped the oars for my Pram; similar to what was done for the Dory. I added the “leather”, paper that I painted with Vallejo Leather Belt. There’s a wide (3/4”) single layer of paper for leather against the oar locks. There’s a thin 1/16” strip wrapped around several times that’s to prevent the oar from slipping out. I first painted one layer on a sheet of paper. Then after it dried I cut into strips (3/4” for the single layer, 1/16” for the other). For both, I first glued just the end of the paper to the oar and let it dry. For the thin one that goes multiple times around, I glued a little at a time. After they were all glued and dried a bit, I protected the bare wood on the oar shafts with Tamiya tape and added another layer of paint. You really need the second layer of paint for the sides of the thin strip that’s looped multiple times.

I’m waiting for the extra parts (broken yards, missing PE) to ship from Model Shipways to finish my Pram. I’m sure with the holidays that things are a bit delayed.

Posted (edited)

I’m not sure if I’m misreading what to do or the wrong parts are included in the kit. I’m adding the oarlocks. Each is (I think) supposed to be made from the oarlock piece itself, the brass base with a hole for the oarlock, and two holes for two pins cut short (simulating bolts). Unfortunately, the pins supplied were too wide to fit through the holes. Instead of trying to drill the holes larger, I simulated bolts using a drop of copper paint.

Finished adding the fixtures to the main mast of my Pram. I think I want a mini drill press? (Question mark intentional.) While I found shaping the mast without a lathe (using my drill) just fine (some said it’s easier with a drill), I really struggled to get the small holes lined up right using a small hand drill. Maybe there’s a trick I don’t know about.

This step seems to be another case of a disconnect between the plans (which I had to zoom to 103%) and the written instructions and photos. The plans show a small “eye” near the bottom of the mast. The instructions and photos instead show a small copper wire loop (which I shaped with my new round nose pliers). And then plans show a “shroud eye” with an asterisks to “see instructions for alternative fitting” (with the instructions instead showing a pair of copper straps). And finally, the plans show a single hole at the top for a halyard block but the instructions have you make a halyard sheave (simulating I think a block inside the mast). It’s fine to give different ways to build the model, but when you’re new (this is supposed to be the second beginner model) you think you’re just misunderstanding. The instructions say nothing (unless I missed it) about these being alternatives (except for the lone asterisk about the shroud eye).

I’ve now seen a bunch of other build logs note that the pins they supply are way too wide. The pins that came with my Sherbourne fit.

The pins supplied with the kits are too wide.  Apparently it every Shipwright series kit that they assemble has this QA oversight.  I replaced the nails with some brass sewing pins that should be available just about anywhere that has sewing supplies.

The replacement parts I ordered from Model

Expo arrived today. They were a bit delayed in shipping (holidays and inventory). But they were free (free replacement parts, free shipping).

I’m shaping the boom and gaff by hand with sandpaper. I’ll probably leave them a bit oval just to minimize the chance they break at the spot of the predrilled holes (like last time).

The instructions call for the outhaul cleat to be attached to the boom. I could not find an outhaul cleat, but there was a downhaul cleat. I’m going to use that. It a future steps calls for a downhaul cleat I’ll fashion one scratch.

My first stab at anything approaching rigging. The instructions are not entirely clear and I’m trying to follow them.

First use of my quad hands (quint hands). (Don’t order one from amazon - order directly from the company - I’ve seen scam versions on amazon and then people complain that they don’t work.)

I don’t know how I would have added the fore stay and two back stays to a mast that’s not intended to be glued in place without quad hands.

Those quad hands and  third hands are very useful tools for rigging, good work on your  Pram .

I have the mast up and rigged. I had to order a new sail from Model Expo. Once that comes I’ll be able to finish.

(I’ll tidy the rigging when my fly tying scissors I ordered arrive.)

@palmerit ohh those quad hands look good.

Not a quality issue, but I ended up having to order a new sail because I followed the instructions of taping the sail to a cutting mat. While the mat was clean, it had been used some, so some of the green from the mat ended up staining the sail. I tried airbrushing with some paint but that didn’t work. Next time maybe I’ll try putting some Saran Wrap down and then taping to that.

I have to say that I’m really not sure how someone would mount the mast and add the rigging (and have the rigging taught) without helping hands. Maybe I could have held the mast with my mouth? I suppose I could have done something to clamp the mast in place.

If you get one, order directly from quadhands.com. The real ones had the logo on the heavy base and have high quality arms. And on the real quad hands, the arms are attached to the base with strong magnets so that they can be moved around. I saw some posts various places of quad hands not working - mainly that the arms wouldn’t stay in place - and the photos or videos they had didn’t have the quad hands logo (they were painted the same color and kind of looked the same). Clearly they were knockoffs.

Take two making a sail for my Pram after getting a new sail from Model Expo. It took a couple email pokes, but it was finally shipped.

Take one I made a couple mistakes. First, I used yellow PVA glue (did the same on my Smack) which naturally gave the sail a yellow tone. This time I used a white bookbinders glue. Second, I had taped my sail to my green cutting mat. It was clean but because it had been cut up a bit, some of the green stained sail. This go around, I put Saran Wrap down first.

Tomorrow I’ll add the corner stays, and when they’re dried I’ll drill the holes for the line, and then try to figure out how to attach it. The instructions from the Pram are a bit more extensive than they were for the Smack but still not very clear.

Lashed and laced the top of the sail (still need to trim the ends of the lines after the Glenn put on them dries).

IMG_6628.jpeg

Starting to raise the sail. I think I understand what to do.

I originally thread the halyard through both holes at the top of the mast then realized it went only through one.

It seems odd to me that the halyard and downhaul lines are both secured on the same cleat. I would have thought there’d be separate cleats for separate lines.

I gotta finish my Smack (almost done) and my Sherbourne (was waiting to do the rigging on the Pram and Smack before getting to that).

I have more models in the cellar on a shelf than I can count. I was probably going to go peruse them in a bit and pick the next one.

I decided I'm going to wait to begin the Duchess, which I had said would be my second model. Then I decided to do the Dory, Pram, and Smack, and the NRG half hull. Then I got caught up in Black Friday sales and decided to buy some of the Vanguard fishing boats since they were easy models. And I somehow late at night pulled the trigger on some other models. Oh, and I inexplicably ordered the Pavel Nikitin Oseberg v3 last week. What was I thinking? I literally have about 10 years of models. I need to stop. Or take a pill.
