Hi to all members

My name is Andy Gray and I am relatively new to the world of building wooden model ships. I started a year ago with HMS Endeavour from Artesania Latina and it has taken me just under a year to complete (will add photo at the end of this) I had a lot of help with this first build by following John Aliprantis on his Youtube build log and like him I found the planking of the hull fairly difficult, but ended up with something that is about passable.

For my second build I have bought HMS Victory from Caldercraft and will be starting this in the new year, but before then I intend to read and learn as much as I can about the build  from people like yourselves who have much more ability and expertise than myself. One thing I do want to do with Victory is add lighting in areas such as the gunports and the officer quarters but my knowledge of electronics/LED installation is very limited ( However I did manage to get 5 leds wired up and working on the Endeavour)

If anyone has any useful tips/info on the installation of a lighting system on Victory I would appreciate your comments. Things like what size LED's to use 3mm/5mm, what voltage should they be, how are the cables layed on the ship, where the cables exit the ship, how the LED's are fixed to the gun ports, at what stage of the build are the LED's added etc etc. I would really appreciate any help you can give meDSCN1888.thumb.JPG.45194b57fa2434879aa31714d399fb3e.JPG

Welcome aboard, mate!  Some have employed lighting on various builds ... so perhaps searching various ways (e.g. LED, lights, lighting ...) might steer you towards useful information.  A recent Ship In Bottle of Blackbeard's Queen Annes Revenge (as seen in the Pirates of the Caribbean series of films) featured the forward pointing flame thrower - lit up dramatically by LEDs.

Completed builds:  Khufu Solar Barge - 1:72 Woody Joe

Current project(s): Gorch Fock restoration 1:100;  Billing Wasa (bust) - 1:100;  Great Harry (bust) 1:88 ex. Sergal 1:65

I seem to remember that Doris was building one of her spectacular models with lighting inside (was it the SotS or the Royal Katherine?).

Check out the old posts of her and find out. Maybe you'll find your answers there?

Welcome Andy.   Also check out the forum sponsor Evan Designs.  The sponsors are listed on the lower right hand corner of the main home page, at least in a PC browser.  Evan Designs sells LEDs for lighting various projects (ships, doll houses, other models, etc) and also has some how-to info.

Welcome Andy

Nice build of Endeavour.  If you got thru planking on your first build you are doing great and there is no where else to go but up. Enjoy HMS Victory.
Best Rick

A very warm welcome to Model Ship World Andy.  Nice work on your Endeavor.  The Caldercraft Victory will be much more of a challenge than your Endeavor.  I recommend that you get a couple of reference books before you begin your Victory build.  I like the following books to start with:

1.  The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships by Nepean Longridge.  This is a classic ship modeling book that will be useful for future builds as well.  The fold-out drawings by George Campbell are excellent.

2.  Anatomy of the Ship Series: The 100 Gun Ship by John McKay.  This book has detailed drawings of the framing and interior spaces of the Victory.  Both of these can be purchased at reasonable cost in the used book market.  I purchased my copies of each of these from Thriftbooks.com for about $35 each.

Best wishes on your Victory build.  I do hope that you consider starting a build log.

There are a lot of experienced ship modelers on MSW who are willing to answer questions.

Welcome Aboard!
